Preston North End 0-2 Liverpool: Carabao Cup – as it happened

Preston had their chances, but Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi’s second-half goals put Liverpool into the quarter-finals

2 min: It’s been raining quite a lot in Lancashire this evening, though it’s eased off right now. Hoods down in the dugouts.

1 min: A little bit of space for Minamino, 30 yards from goal. He spins but can neither control nor slip the ball down the left channel for Origi. Preston clear.

Eddie Nketiah’s bid for internet immortality and the Bill Shankly derby | The Fiver

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now!

There are no Big Cup fixtures this week. No action either in Big Vase, or whatever that thing is that Spurs are in. There are no international qualifiers and no rescheduled Premier League matches, this week’s episodes of Succession and the Bake Off have been and gone, and the nights are fair drawing in so Granny Fiver won’t let us out to the swings. There’s not much to do, dear reader, so, and you won’t hear us saying this sort of thing very often, thank goodness for the League Cup! Yep! You heard us. Aye.

Arsenal 2-0 Leeds United: Carabao Cup fourth round – as it happened

Calum Chambers scored immediately on arrival as a second-half substitute, as Arsenal made it through to the last eight

7 min: Leeds show in attack for the first time, Harrison slipping a ball down the left flank to release the speedy James. The flag pops up for offside.

6 min: Nketiah probes with purpose down the left and reaches the byline. Llorente does well to stop him getting any further infield. Then another phase of Arsenal attack, and Nketiah drags a shot wide left from the edge of the box. He might have been offside, but it doesn’t matter. Arsenal have started brightly.

The Fiver | Farewell Walter Smith, one of football’s underrated greats

Like this? Forward it to your friends and they can sign up here

One of football’s most dependable white knights has dismounted his charger for the final time. Walter Smith: now there was a man you’d be happy to see galloping into view when things were in danger of going a sour way out. Take Rangers, who he calmly steered to silverware after Graeme Souness left for Liverpool during the 1990-91 title run-in. Or Scotland, for whom he picked up the very many small pieces left behind by Berti Vogts, the team rising 70-odd spots in the rankings in short order, with the Kirin Cup thrown in. Or Rangers again, whisking them from Paul Le Guen to the Euro Vase final in less than 16 months. As speedy base-metal-to-gold transformations go, that registers a full 10 on the Fiver’s patented and fully trademarked Tuchelometer.

Brighton 1-4 Manchester City: Premier League – live reaction!

Updates from the 5.30pm (UK time) kick-off at the Amex StadiumLive scores: all the goals as they go in around the UK and EuropeGet in touch! Send your thoughts to Scott by email here

5 min: Foden loops in. Brighton clear. Walker launches back into the mixer. Sanchez claims, then clanks his clearance into Lallana’s back! The keeper’s very lucky to get away with the clumsy mistake.

4 min: Out on the left flank, Dunk shoves Foden in the back, a stupid challenge given the City midfielder was running the ball out of play. It’s now a chance for the visitors to load the box.

Chelsea 7-0 Norwich City: Premier League – as it happened

Mason Mount scored a hat-trick as top trounced bottom at Stamford Bridge

3 min: Aarons makes some good ground down the right and nearly tees up Giannoulis on the edge of the box. The ball rolls behind his team-mate and Chelsea break up the other end, Havertz working his way down the left. His low cross is cleared by Kabak.

2 min: Chelsea work their way into the match with a few passes, slowly moving forward. Eventually Aarons gets the first meaningful touch for Norwich, winning a free kick and putting paid to the hosts’ early rhythm.

The Fiver | Real Madrid are coming to Barcelona and Lionel Messi isn’t coming back

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now!

It was a mixed bag in Europe last night for some of the Premier League’s top striking talent. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal that either began a new era of Big Cup glory at Old Trafford or condemned Manchester United to another season of grinding mediocrity, depending on where you’re coming from with the old Ole thing. Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner both picked up cases of knack that will see them miss Unconvincing 2021-22 Premier League Champions Chelsea’s next few dull one-goal victories against mid-table opposition they really should be whipping with panache. Meanwhile in Big Vase, Patson Daka notched his first European goal for Leicester and then, a mere 33 minutes and three more goals later, became the Foxes’ joint-leading scorer in continental football of all time, ever. Easy as that! And there you are, thinking Ronaldo is a force of nature.

Manchester United 3-2 Atalanta: Champions League – as it happened

Manchester United recovered from 2-0 down to beat Atalanta, with Cristiano Ronaldo heading an 81st-minute winner

2 min: Atalanta are kicking towards the Stretford End in this first half.

Manchester United kick off ... but only after all 22 players take the knee. There’s no room for racism. Kick it out.

Brentford 0-1 Chelsea: Premier League – as it happened

Ben Chilwell’s first-half goal and a staunch second-half rearguard action sent Chelsea back to the top of the table

2 min: Now Azpilicueta miscontrols. A slightly scrappy start by the European champions.

14 sec: Chalobah heads back towards Mendy, and only just gets enough purchase on the ball. Mendy races out to clear with Toney sniffing around. If the young Chelsea defenders are nervous, that won’t help matters.
