Powder of Sin is free for the rest of today.
Right now it's at #3 in Regency -- which is odd because it's not set in the Regency era (it's a Victorian romance)
And it's at #3 in Romantic Comedy -- which is also odd because I didn't say it was a romcom. It has moments of humor but it's hardly laugh-out-loud funny stuff.
This tells me that either someone else can add labels or I was not operating on all cylinders when I listed this book at Amazon.
But there we go, And it's 107 in the free books overall! That's okay.
In other news, the Spanish version of Take a Walk on the Wild Side is an earworm. Makes sense--Lou Reed's version essentially defines earworm material.

swelled head
One of the writerly tasks I avoid is checking an ebook before it goes to print. I'm not a great proofreader and that's what the job requires. I also have to find and collect "praise for this book" that will go in the front of the print version.
Our book is almost overdue (sorry) so I'm doing that job now. I can do the search pretty late at night so I am, hoping it will make me sleepy but... hey wow! I'm having a Sally Fields moment gathering the reviews for The Gentleman's Keeper.
Sometimes looking for good reviews is difficult because you have to slog through a wasteland to find them. This? It's a sunny day, it's picking a bouquet of sweet daisies from a huge field of perfect flowers .... with only a couple of slugs in there.
I pluck the slugs and set them free. Naw, I sprinkle them with salt and then stomp on them.
What I've got so far (and I think I'm done now. Unless you want to send me your fulsome tribute.)

Does Not Adjust to Transition Time Well
back to school
I want routine of school days...I hate losing any boys from my house.
I will be grateful to have less mess...It will be too quiet.
I enjoy alone time...Where is everyone?
I can reclaim my space...I don't freaking need that much space.
I am glad they are growing up--are grown up. This is the path life is supposed to take....I want my babies back.

Unnecessary Preemptive Blame-Game
You know what I love? Lines like this:
I like Summer Devon’s work precisely because she’s a competent author
who writes well and you know exactly what you’re getting when you pick
up one of her books.
That's from a review of Sibling Rivals out in October. The reviewer liked the book, but it didn't set her world on fire. 3.5 out of 5 stars. Pleasant but not enthusiastic review.
When I headed over to goodreads, I couldn't help but notice other people were hmm about the book. Of course now I'm in a raging tizzy of fear.
I get pretty good reviews. I'm no constant five star queen but, yeah, I'm used to a general "go, Kate/Summer!" Maybe this one will not quite get the same applause.
And I tried to think what was different about this book?
I might have an answer. I think I know who to point a finger at. I have someone to blame if this falls on its face.
The reviewers! Naw, no, hahahahaha, just kidding.
The author! No. Way. She's great and the book is fine. (or so I'll repeat to myself to myself over and over and over through the middle of October--by then I'll be done. [I cringe when I think of a couple of my books and this is not one of the cringe-worthy ones. So okay. Phew.])
Give up? Don't know who to blame? Did I make it clear it's not me? In my mind, anyway?
BARBARA PYM! It is all her fault.
I freaking loved her books in the 90s. I read them and reread them. A few months back, I picked up Excellent Women and read most of it again. Soon after that, I started work on S.R. And what we have could be a result is my unconscious attempt at understated that she does so well. A single gesture carries a lot of meaning in that sort of writing. And let's be clear, her characters aren't kick-ass or even, always, particularly active. It's a retreat to another age, another sort of story.
Hey, speaking of which, did you know I wrote a few literary things? Here's one (a free short story! once published in a literary journal.)
So okay that might not fly these days. Maybe it doesn't fly when I accidentally attempt it, or maybe it doesn't fly with some readers. Or maybe that's not what happened. I don't know.
Let's make it clear: I never, ever sit down next to the window at Barnes and Noble and think "today I will try to write like [name of author]."
I just write the story. ... and surf the internet. And bug Linda or Nettie when they try to work. Sometimes I eavesdrop on other conversations. Now that's an education....
Returning to the matter at hand: What I'm trying to do here is to shift the blame just in case this story isn't universally adored. I've never attempted preemptive finger pointing, so this is a new genre of blog post.
Of course if this story (that I'm very fond of) turns out to be wildly popular, I might blame Barbara Pym anyway. Did I mention I love her stuff? Except I am not reading anything of hers again. Not for a while. My TBR list is way too long.
Speaking of which, I owe Beth and Eli. They're both excellent writers, but don't worry. They are not easily imitated. Nope. Can't see me accidentally writing like them.

YUM. Mm. What's for dinner? ....oh...really? That?
My new, can't miss idea!
A Tastier Than It Looks Cookbook... as featured on the Facebook!
clockwise from left:
Empty pancake plate (plenty of good recipes
for pancakes. I like this one but I separate the eggs and whip the whites).
Top (white gunk)=1 part mascarpone cheese, 1 part yogurt OR
sour cream, some sugar, lemon peel, lemon and lime juice.
Far
right--cameo appearance a banana (not
appearing in this recipe but you can add it to sauce if you want. I bet it would be tasty.)
Bottom
right (red sauce)= about 1.5 cups raspberries, splash of oj, more lemon and
lime peel and l n l juice. Also sugar to taste. 1-2 tablespoons corn starch. Cook and cook and stir while you cook.
The lumps are partially cooked peaches--I throw in peeled chunks toward end of sauce
cooking (don't like mooshy peaches)
Plate the pancake (don't you love that
verb? Yes, you do). Glop on white gunk. Glop on fruit sauce. I can see this working in a crepe, and I suspect the two sauces would do well on a
fancy cake, say angel food. You could make it into a good trifle if you chopped up the cake, and if you add whipped cream to the white gunk (it's pretty thick as is) AND no matter if it's used for a trifle or for filling---I'd add a splash of grand marnier to the red sauce. And to the cake. And in that glass over there.
Oh, and maybe I'd chop the peaches in a more elegant manner for a nice cake. I tend to go for the chunky peasant look when I cut up anything. But this is not called the Oh So Beautiful Cookbook.

rolls around, anyone who read the review ("The characters are colorful
and animated, befitting a thrilling story line") will have forgotten all about the book.
What to do? How about a Shhh temporary sale? So for anyone who read RT
Magazine, or who reads this post, here's a link to a pre-wide-release lower price.
