Medieval Monday! First Encounter in The Lady of the Forest by Barbara Bettis

Laurel O'Donnell

It’s Medieval Monday! Today, I am honored to feature the amazing Barbara Bettis and the excerpt from her novel The Lady of the Forest.

It’s about –

He must pursue his enemy; she must protect her people. Can their love survive the duties that drive them apart?

When her elderly husband dies, Lady Katherine fakes her own death and disappears into the forest with others escaping the brutish new lord. Determined to protect her people, she knocks the wrong man senseless. But Lord Henry isn’t an enemy, he’s the brother of her childhood friend. Although his tender confidence tempts her, she’s bound by duty.

Henry of Chauvere has found the one lady he wants for his own, never mind she’s tied him hand and foot. When he learns the king has ordered her to wed Stonehill’s ruthless new master, he insists Kate seek haven with his sister. But she won’t desert her friends. Henry vows to solve her problem, provided he catches a traitor before the threat from Kate’s past catches her.

When a daring rescue compels Henry and Kate to join forces, their attraction grows into love. If only duty didn’t drive them apart.

Continuing along with the excerpt –

Perhaps his capture didn’t qualify as a prank after all. The two who tapped him on the chin, then trussed him up hadn’t been joking.

“Well?” he demanded. “What have you to say for yourself, boy?”

Struggling to pull off the now-soaked hooded cape, the boy raised his head.

Her head?

A girl? Shock sliced through Henry’s discomfort. How had he not noticed that thick, moonlight-colored braid before? Ah, it had been draped inside the short cape.

Medieval Monday! First Encounter in Dragon Knight’s Axe by Mary Morgan!

Laurel O'Donnell

It’s Medieval Monday! Today, I am honored to feature the talented Mary Morgan and the excerpt from her novel Dragon Knight’s Axe.

It’s about –

Alastair MacKay, a battled-scarred Dragon Knight flees to the sea to separate himself from his fae-given power connecting him to the land. But it is on land that he rescues a woman from a slave trader in Ireland. It is through Fiona he steps back inadvertently into a world filled with magic—taking on the role of protector and at the same time leading him on a journey to confront his greatest regret and fears.

Research assistant, Fiona O’Quinlan loves translating ancient artifacts at Trinity College. When she falls asleep on an archeological dig, she awakens in another time. She soon discovers a Dragon Knight’s relic has been entrusted into her care. Determined to return the artifact to the Great Glen, Fiona is unprepared for the danger ahead—losing her heart and soul to Alastair “Beast” MacKay.

Will their love be strong enough to soothe the beast and heal the man? Or will Death swing its axe, leaving them lost for all eternity?

Continuing along with the excerpt –

A new captor…

“Done!” Robert spit into his hand and held it out.

Instead of shaking his hand, he dropped the ten stones onto his palm. He waved over his head and another man came forth. “Have Steiner bring me a barrel of my whisky.”

“The Kelly won’t be pleased.”

“Do not worry about him. I will send Steiner with another of my private stash.”

“Aye.”

Robert stepped aside. “I do not understand why ye would want this one.”

“I do not expect ye to,” replied her new captor.

Fiona’s eyes went wide when her demon took a hold of her rope and walked her away from the crowd.

As soon as they passed the hoard of people, he turned to face her. “What is your name, lass?”

Her tongue felt as if it were plastered to the roof of her mouth.

“Can ye not speak?” he asked.

“Fi…ona…Fiona O’Quinlan,” she stammered.

Medieval Monday! First Encounter in Curse of the Healer by Ashley York

Laurel O'Donnell

Happy Solar Eclipse day!  It’s also Medieval Monday! Today, I am honored to feature the fabulous Ashley York and the excerpt from her novel Curse of the Healer.

It’s about –

After the death of Brian Boru in 1014, a legend arose of a healer so great she could raise a man from the dead, with a power so strong it could make any warrior the next high king of Éire…and to steal it away from her, he need only possess her.

Fated to be a healer…

Aednat has spent her entire life training to be the great healer, knowing she must remain alone. When she meets Diarmuid, the intense attraction she feels toward him shakes her resolve to believe in such a legend. If she gives in to the passion he ignites in her, can she settle for being less?

Destined to be his…

Diarmuid of Clonascra is renowned for his bravery in battle. Only one thing daunts him: the prospect of taking a wife. The safest course would be to keep his distance from Aednat, the bold, headstrong healer who’s far too tempting for his peace of mind. But his overking orders him to protect her from a group of craven warriors intent on kidnapping her to steal her power.

What starts as duty for Diarmuid quickly transforms into something more. Aednat’s power might be at risk, but so is his closed-off heart.

Continuing along with the excerpt –

He stopped close enough for her to see the tiny lines at the corners of his bright blue eyes and the quirk of his heavy brow before he asked, “And why would ye not believe what I say to ye?”

“I do not know ye.” Arrogant! “And who are ye to say what the lad’s punishment should be?”

He had long, dark hair. Taller than most, he was probably seldom overlooked, and she had a notion his will was rarely denied.

Medieval Monday! First Encounter in Redeeming the Rogue Knight by Elisabeth Hobbes

Laurel O'Donnell

It’s Medieval Monday! Today, I am honored to feature the amazing Elisabeth Hobbes and the excerpt from her novel Redeeming the Rogue Knight.

It’s about –

The spy who sought refuge…

When injured spy Sir Roger Danby comes asking for shelter at her inn, Lucy Carew is wary. He may be strikingly handsome, but the disgraced single mother has learnt the hard way with men like him. Against her better judgement, she gives him refuge.

Sir Roger has never been at the mercy of a woman before, and he’s never met one as mysterious and bewitching as Lucy. He hasn’t come looking for redemption, but Lucy is a woman who could reach in and touch his closely guarded heart…

Continuing along with the excerpt –

‘What happened?’

‘Ambush,’ the injured man slurred. ‘Don’t fear, little dove. We won’t hurt you. If you do what we ask.’

‘Are you alone?’ Thomas raised his sword again and stepped towards Lucy, dragging his companion with him. ‘Has anyone else come this evening?’

‘No one,’ Lucy answered, sweat pooling in her lower back at the sight of the weapon. ‘I’m the only one here.’

Except for Robbie. A throb of anxiety welled inside her as she thought of her son lying peacefully in his cot in the room above. A son whose uncle did not know of his existence.

Medieval Monday! First Encounter in Highland Redemption by Ceci Giltenan

Laurel O'Donnell

It’s Medieval Monday! Today, I am honored to feature the talented Ceci Giltenan and the excerpt from her novel Highland Redemption.

It’s about –

Tomas’s life changed forever when at the age of seven he was adopted by Laird and Lady Maclan ending the abuse he’d suffered at Ambrose Ruthven’s hand. He’d never looked back and never intended to

But fate had other plans…

Now, nineteen years later, he runs headlong into his past. The Ruthvens are in trouble and Tomas is in a position to help them. But can he set aside his hatred for Laird Ruthven for the good of the clan into which he was born?

Fate always adds a twist…

Laird Ruthven’s daughter is not what Tomas expected. Vida Ruthven is sweet, smart, and utterly irresistible.

Now, Tomas must choose between being the savior or taking the ultimate revenge.

Continuing along with the excerpt –

Tomas took the pawn from her hand. “White goes first, make your move.”

Initially he was distracted, thinking of Moyna. She appeared to recognize him. That she didn’t acknowledge it was good. He would have to try and find a way to talk with her. But after the first few less than well thought out moves, Tomas realized he had to focus while playing chess with Vida. He also thought he might have an inkling why no one, especially her father, would play with her—they didn’t like to lose. She was exceedingly good and he lost the first game in minutes.

Medieval Monday! Introducing…First Encounter!

Laurel O'Donnell

Medieval Monday is back! This time we are featuring the First Encounter between the hero and heroine of our novels. My first encounter is between Ryen De Bouriez, the dread French knight known as the Angel of Death and Bryce Princeton, the terrifying English warrior called the Prince of Darkness from The Angel and The Prince.

A winner will be chosen out of all the comments throughout the Medieval Monday First Encounter, so please follow along and comment! Don’t forget to leave your email so I can contact the winner!

Here’s the start of the scene!

The Angel and the Prince by Laurel O'Donnell

The cloud of white parted slowly before Ryen as she stepped through the soft, whirling smoke created by the smoldering candles placed around the tent.  Quivers of anticipation rippled through her as she saw the wisps swirl around the shadowy shape.  She stopped, not wanting the thrill to dissipate from her veins.  So often in the past did a man not live up to her expectations that she was afraid she would be sorely disappointed by him, the mightiest of legends.  But his shadow beckoned to her and she pushed any doubts aside.  She had to know his secrets.

Ryen continued to move through the frosty smoke, the dark blur of his body forming into a solid shape.  He had fought to the end, she thought, just as I would have.  Lucien said it had taken twenty men to bring him to his knees.  Twenty men?  She wanted to believe this, but surely Lucien must have been exaggerating.  Yet it wasn’t like him to inflate the truth.  She moved toward the figure chained to a post in the tent, stepping out of the mists.

His head was hanging down, his long black mane draping over his chest.  So he did have black hair!  Was it truly hiding horns?

Ryen moved closer, slowly, her gaze appraising him, his body.  He was no disappointment there.  The urge to touch him was overwhelming.  She stretched her fingers toward him and touched the hair on his naked chest, running her hands along his torso, marveling at the size of his muscles.  They were hard, sculptured curves of warm flesh.  Magnificent, she thought.  The smell of him, the heady musky scent of him, enveloped her.

Her prisoner stirred, his head moving slightly from side to side, as if he were struggling to clear his mind.  His head slowly lifted.  A thrill of anticipation touched Ryen’s spine as his dark eyes, the eyes of midnight, rose like the moon to gleam at her.

“Enjoying yourself?” he asked, his voice low, suggestive.

Wow! Want to read more? The next part of the scene will be at Cecelia Mecca’s blog next Monday for Medieval Monday!
