Featured Artist of the Month for March 2011
I had the wonderful opportunity to appear on a local community TV show that showcases all types of local artists called Arts 101. They graciously interviewed and featured me as "Artist of the Month" for March as well as asked me to read a small excerpt from my newest crime thriller Silent Partner .
My segment was hosted by Vincent Amelio, produced by Spencer Wilkinson, and sponsored by Out & About Magazine. I want to thank them for making me feel comfortable and welcome. It was just a little bit out of my normal comfort zone, but I had a great time and learned quite a bit about filming a TV show.
The above photos were highlights of the show.

Search in Georgia for Man Who Shot and Killed One Officer and Wounded Another
Even though I am based on the other side of the country, I want to offer what publicity I can to the search for a man in Georgia who is accused of killing a police officer. The shooting took place on Tuesday afternoon in Athens, Georgia and marked the first officer killed in that college town since 1936.
Jamie Donnell Hood was believed to be involved in a carjacking on Tuesday and was later seen as a passenger in a different vehicle. When Senior Police Officer Tony Howard stopped the car to investigate, Hood jumped out and began shooting. He wounded Officer Hood and then came upon the squad car of Senior Police Officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian as he was attempting to flee. Hood shot into Christian's car, killing the officer. Hood has managed to evade arrest for the past two days, and authorities believe that he may be receiving assistance in his efforts to hide.
It breaks my heart whenever I read about violence against police officers and other members of our law enforcement who work tirelessly and with great courage to keep our communities safe. The number of police officers murdered on the job this year is quite disturbing. I have had the honor of spending quite a bit of time with officers out here in California, and you never will meet finer men and women.
I hope that James Hood is brought to justice soon and, if found guilty, is made to answer for the crimes he is accused of committing. Officer Christian is survived by his wife, two children, and other family members. The residents of Athens are planning to line the streets for miles to honor him during the funeral procession this weekend.
UPDATE: James Hood surrendered to authorities on Friday night after a standoff involving hostages. He insisted on giving himself up on television as he believed he would be killed without the attention of the cameras.

What Secret Lies Just Beyond this Road for Hero Jack Davis?
The country road remained silent and empty.
A slight breeze lifted a few pieces of litter, scuttling across the gravel road.
A family farm was just up ahead.
Sirens shattered the peace of the country and approached fast…
Lives would never be the same.
What dark secrets lurk at the family farmhouse?
In my newest thriller novel, Silent Partner, K9 Deputy Jack Davis faces the difficult task of being a cop and protecting his girlfriend. He's in pursuit of a serial killer terrorizing a coastal community. Each crime scene is more hideous than the last, taunting police and shocking the community.
Who is Jack Davis? What has shaped his life and instilled such a sense of integrity?
Excerpt from Silent Partner's Prologue:
1983
Jack Davis pumped his skinny eight-year-old legs faster as his bike zoomed down a dirt road just before the O'Connell's farm. Summer radiated brightly and nothing could stand in his way to be outside, free from chores, and at his favorite fishing hole. In his opinion, it represented the greatest time of the year. School hid in the past and not even a slight thought for the near future. His best friend Pete was meeting him at their secret fishing spot with some new glowworms that he'd stolen from his older brother. Two police cars, followed by a tan four-door sedan, sped past Jack with their lights flashing. No sirens.
Jack pulled his bike over to the side of the road, next to a broken barbwire fence and watched as the emergency vehicles turned down the O'Connell's long, dirt driveway.
Dust plumed up into the air with a massive beige cloud making it difficult to see the farmhouse. Less than a minute later, a white van approached at a much slower speed. It too disappeared down the driveway. Something terrible had happened. Jack heard stories at school about the monster that lived at the O'Connell farm. At least that's what they called him, but in reality Mr. O'Connell was a bad man. Jack kept his eyes on the road and listened for more cars. When he felt confident that no more vehicles headed his way, he squeezed through the broken fence, pushed his bike, and then eased down toward the commotion.
He jumped back on the bicycle and coasted down the hill. The bumpy backroad jarred his bones, but his curiosity, as well as concern, got the better of him.
Jack watched as two sheriff deputies roughly escorted Mr. O'Connell from the house. Arms pinned behind his back, wrists secured in handcuffs. His head hung forward as he stared aimlessly at the ground. The monster's lips moved slowly, but no one paid any attention to his inaudible babble. Barely dressed in a grubby white t-shirt and dark, stained blue jeans, he seemed to have forgotten a pair of shoes. It looked like he hadn't shaved or bathed in a week as his greasy, dark brown hair matted against the back of his skull. Grim expressions clouded the deputies' faces as they put the man in the backseat of the patrol car and slammed the door shut. They had witnessed the pure evil of what one person could do to another...

Book Review of Silent Partner for Suspense Magazine
Silent Partner
by Jennifer Chase
Not enough is said about the K9 units who work alongside our soldiers in war zones and the cops on our streets. In many ways, these dogs are the unsung heroes.
Author Jennifer Chase, has a vested interest in the subjects of police work, the all too frighteningly real problem of elusive serial killers who stalk our planet, cops who put everything on the line to track and apprehend the guilty, and the dogs who give us their all. How fragile is the human mind, particularly the mind of a child, when it has to come to terms with the horror of murder?
What effect does it have on the cops who deal with the atrocities murderers have committed and, in turn, commit themselves to an often long and grueling journey to hunt them down?
Sometimes killers hide themselves in the guise of innocence, cunning enough to deceive others into thinking they are really a victim.
When dealing with the nightmare of the broken, psychotic mind, the truth is often elusive. People and situations are not always what they seem.
Jennifer Chase's third novel, Silent Partner, moves from the jungle of Vietnam to the streets of California, in a fast, suspenseful and slick cop thriller with a twist. The plot also focuses and pays tribute to the extraordinary bond that develops between dog and handler, making their partnership as close and important as people share on the force and in the military.

Top 5 Questions from my Latest Book Signing and Appearance
Thank you to everyone who braved the rain and came out to my book signing on Saturday in Gilroy, California! It was great to meet you all!
Here are the beautiful hills that surround the City of Gilroy.
I read a chapter from " Silent Partner " to introduce readers to Deputy Jack Davis and his four-legged partner Keno as they hunt down a local serial killer. Also, I answered some wonderful questions. I thought I'd share the top questions.
1. What made you want to write about serial killers?
I've always been fascinated with the criminal mind and serial killers. Basically, I want to know what makes criminals tick and why they choose to commit specific types of crimes, including serial crimes. I've experienced first hand what it's like to be up close and personal with a violent psychopathic individual who moved in next door to me. I was stalked and threatened on a regular basis for more than two years. My curiosity grew about these types of people and it led to study them academically.
2. Do you write everyday?
I write six days a week. In between novel projects, I generally take a break of a couple of weeks to recharge my creative energy. My writing days are typically long (10-12 hours), but I find taking several breaks throughout the day helps to keep me rested and motivated.
3. Did you research police and K9 procedures?
Yes, I researched specific areas such as crimes scenes, K9 procedures and training, and various mental disorders to write "Silent Partner". I spent time training with the police K9 with my own dog and I rode several shifts with a K9 unit.
4. What made you decide on a K9 cop as your main character?
I enjoy reading and writing crime fiction. I realized that most characters are police officers, FBI agents, and private investigators. I wanted to give a little bit different perspective on the investigating officer and decided that police K9 was a fresher viewpoint for a storyline.
5. Do you work in the field of criminology or forensics?
I consult on criminal and some civil cases. I specialize in crime scene investigation and criminal profiling. I've been asked to view cold cases, look at forensic evidence, crime scene photos, and witness and suspect interviews.

Looking at the Differences between Single- and Multi-Offender Rape Situations
Even though I am no longer engaged in the formal education system when it comes to my study of criminology and forensic psychology, I try to stay current on the latest research and writing being done in these fields. One source of this information for me is the " In the News" by Dr. Karen Franklin , which focuses on the very issues for which I have a passion. Franklin is a forensic psychologist and a professor, so the information she shares is detailed and academic in nature.
One of her recent posts focuses on the mindset of men who engage in group rape versus those perpetrators who make this crime a solo act. She argues that while all rapists are often lumped together for the purpose of psychological study, not looking at the characteristics that are specific to those who participate in group rape is a mistake.
Franklin asserts that multi-offender rape involves male group peer dynamics and the need for men to demonstrate their heterosexual masculinity to one another. She believes the crime is less about the sex act itself than when performed without witnesses and co-attackers.
She closed the post by sharing three questions that were posed at the beginning of a seminar series sponsored by the British Psychological Society, including whether or not all perpetrators are equally responsible for a multi-offender rape and how best to prevent this specific type of rape.
What do you think about the distinction between criminals who rape by themselves versus for an audience ? Is it helpful to look at these rapists differently in terms of psychology and criminal detention? What do you think motivates men to take part in a group rape of a victim?

To Catch a Serial Killer…
We hear about the great technology in forensic science and the continued advancements every year. But how effective is it in solving serial murder cases? DNA testing, along with so many other types of forensic testing, is behind in their backlogs. That means the perpetrators are free to commit even more crimes.
Advancements of DNA testing have helped to close cold cases as well as link cases together. Every law enforcement department throughout the country has unsolved cases that could be solved through recent advancements in DNA technology. Today, investigators who understand which evidence may yield a DNA profile can identify a suspect in ways previously seen only on television.
Evidence invisible to the naked eye can be the key to solving a residential burglary, sexual assault, murder, and serial cases. The saliva on the stamp of a stalker's threatening letter, the perspiration on a rapist's mask, or the skin cells shed on the ligature of a strangled child may hold the key to solving a crime. Without the investigator's understanding of DNA technology and where DNA might be found, those cases may have gone unsolved.
The successful review and cold case investigation of unsolved cases require the same basic elements as the investigation of new cases: cooperation among law enforcement, the crime laboratory, and the prosecutor's office. Investigators should be aware of technological advances in DNA testing that may yield profiles where previous testing was not performed or was unsuccessful.
For example, serial killer Francisco Acevedo was caught last year through DNA evidence in New York. Yonkers Detective John Geiss, the only police detective working full-time on cold cases, linked Acevedo to DNA evidence from cases that occurred in 1989, 1991, and 1996. It had been after nine long years of looking at over a 100 suspects in connection with the deaths of three women who were raped and strangled. All women were found naked, hands bound and bodies facing up.
It wasn't until Acevedo was arrested for a DUI charge that his DNA sample was taken as a condition of his optional parole application, along with the dogged investigation of a cold case detective. Acevedo was charged with six counts of murder. Several other cases in other jurisdictions are now being reexamined.
Cold cases are being solved and prosecuted. For those murderers, you can run but you can't hide forever with forensic science.
