Lessons Learned for the Second Time Around

As I prepare for the release of my second novel in the Emily Stone series, "Dead Game", I have taken some time for reflection over my experience thus far from being the author of "Compulsion". From the research to the writing to the ongoing publicity efforts, I have learned a lot and have been applying much of my newfound knowledge to writing, and getting the word out, about "Dead Game". Here are a few tips I've picked up during my journey as a published author:

1. Every day brings an opportun...

Crime Scene Characteristics -- What Do They Really Mean?

Crime scene characteristics are extremely important to all criminal investigations, especially homicides and serial crimes. After the forensic analysis of the physical evidence found at the crime scene is completed and the victimology is established, then the task of determining the specific characteristics of the crime scene begins.

This is the most interesting part of the investigative process of finding out who committed the crime and why. It definitely piques my interest and it is one of t...

Can Video Games Make You Numb to Violence?

Who remembers growing up on games that were inserted into your family's Atari 2600 or Commodore 64? In those early days of video games that magically appeared on your television, we were amazed by the simple pixel animation of those ever-quickening Space Invaders! There was also the tense game of Frogger. How many times did your frog get run over by the 18-wheeler before successfully jumping logs to reach the other side of the highway? And, of course, we would spend hours trying to reach that...

Emily's Crime Watch – Tip #12

Citizens Unite!

If you are a victim of ANY crime – Report It!

If you're robbed on the street, someone breaks into your house, or you've been swindled – Report It!

It has been reported from law enforcement agencies that one out of every two crimes goes unreported. It's either because victims don't think that the police can do anything about it or they just don't want to get involved.

It can't be stressed enough that if crimes go unreported then the criminals are going to continue to operate witho...

Can a Serial Killer Be Likable?

We have all heard of instances in which women fall in love with prisoners through the exchange of letters, or sometimes simply through nothing more than media coverage, and actually marry the criminals inside the walls of the jail. There is also the occurrence of Stockholm syndrome, which happens when the victim of a crime develops sympathy or an attachment to her assailant. But, what happens when a television network creates a show that asks its audience to find an emotional connection with ...

Is There Really a Sophomore Jinx?

My life as a self-publicist is about to become even busier as I introduce my second book onto the literary market next month. For quite some time now, I have been splitting my energy and efforts between writing the second Emily Stone novel, which is titled "Dead Game", and promoting my current release, "Compulsion", through as many venues as possible. I have learned so much about the book marketing process and established a great number of wonderful relationships that I know will be important...

The D.C. Sniper Faces Execution Next Month

A killing spree that terrified residents of the Washington, D.C. area seven years ago will be returning to the public's attention over the next couple of weeks. John Allen Muhammad, better known in the media as the "D.C. Sniper," will face execution from the Commonwealth of Virginia on November 10.

As we all remember, Muhammad and his juvenile accomplice, Lee Boyd Malvo, shot thirteen people over three weeks in October 2002, with ten of the victims dying. People were afraid to get out of...
