Michael Perry article in the Sun-Argus
Howdy folks:
Back in May, Mike gathered up with a sold-out crowd at the Spring Valley Golf Course for an event hosted by the Spring Valley (Wisconsin) Public Library and Friends of the Library to tell stories and perform selections from his books, including his latest Forty Acres Deep. The Sun-Argus wrote a lovely article about this fun-filled night. The digital version of the story is available here.
If you would like to have Mike speak at your event or play the roughneck ballads and freight train rockers of Michael Perry and the Long Beds, feel free to contact by clicking this link.

Where Do You Get Your Book Ideas? (Rooftop Version)
It all started with snow. Was searching for an address when I came across a note I wrote to my mom and dad, dated Mar 11, 2019:
I’ve been like Ahab and with two white whales, hustling to keep our sheds standing, hours and hours of back and forth, lots of roof-raking and many gallons of kerosene. So far so good. Felt silly about my obsession but now three of our neighbors have had their pole sheds collapse, including one that was pretty new. Drove down to Winona to play a show two nights ago and saw many buildings caved in.
From that battle a book was born.

Polka-Dotted Cow
Sometime in the 1990s, I used CorelDraw to design a cow crossing sign featuring a polka dotted bovine. The dots were a tip of the cap to the Holsteins I grew up with, but also a subliminal reference to splatter (recorded Never Stand Behind a Sneezing Cow right around the same time). I used the logo on my business card and letterhead (remember letters?). So what fun to show up to a recent event and be greeted with this:
Thank you, Tammy!
The sign is a one-off original, but you can get your own polka-dotted cow: Wear it, stick it, or drink with it:
And if you didn’t grow up on a dairy farm…yep. It’s true: Don’t.

Inside the Sign
Utterly unanticipated summer highlight: Crawling inside the Boston Calling sign to help unbolt the sections so it’d fit in the truck until they bolt it back together for next year’s show.

This Week’s Tent Show Radio: Shakey Graves
Check out Mike (Twitter: @SneezingCow) hosting Tent Show Radio (Twitter: @BigBlueTent). This week’s episode features Shakey Graves (Twitter: @ShakeyGraves).
Americana singer-songwriter and guitarist Shakey Graves returned to Big Top following the celebratory reissue of his acclaimed debut album of Roll The Bones X. With his breakthrough debut album, Roll The Bones, self-released in 2011, Shakey Graves quickly developed a cult following, and began his extensive touring career, sharing stages with artists like Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Mumford & Sons and Old Crow Medicine Show. Roll The Bones, catapulted the singer/songwriter into national visibility and led to the artist signing to Dulatone Records for future studio releases which included 2014’s And The War Came and 2018’s Can’t Wake Up. In subsequent years, Shakey Graves has continued to experiment with his approach to the songwriting process and has explored more expansive full-band sounds while venturing into more psychedelic territory through many smaller EP releases including Look Alive, released in 2021.
His knack for storytelling and an enigmatic stage presence immediately draws listeners into his strange narrative world. The musician has captivated audiences and critics alike with his gnarly composite of blues and folk, variety of idiosyncratic techniques, drastic register shifts, and his off-kilter lyric sensibility masked with old-timey Western imagery, the Austin native is truly a one-man-band of epic sonic proportions.
This episode features recordings from Shakey Grave’s 2022 performance at Big Top Chautauqua.
Michael Perry shares humorous stories throughout on the Big Top stage. If you prefer to watch this and previous episodes, follow this link for all the available viewing options.

Going ‘Forty Acres Deep’ for Mental Health
Howdy Folks:
Mike recently spoke with Maggie Ginsberg of Madison Magazine about his latest release, the novella Forty Acres Deep, the musical version of “Forty Acres Deep,” ruthlessness and profanity, and his switch from newspaper columnist to Substack creator.
