This Week’s Tent Show Radio: Punch Brothers
Check out Mike (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter: @SneezingCow) hosting Tent Show Radio (Twitter: @BigBlueTent). This week’s episode features Punch Brothers (Twitter: @punchbrothers).
One of the most ambitious string bands to emerge in the early 21st century, Punch Brothers built their sound on a platform of virtuosic instrumentalism and dazzling arrangements. The GRAMMY Award-winning band consisting of Chris Thile, Chris Eldridge, Paul Kowert, Noam Pikelny, and Gabe Withcer, has spent more than a decade changing the face of acoustic music, stretching the limitations of instruments, and influencing a generation of young musicians.
Formed in the late 2000s, Punch Brothers’ amalgam of bluegrass energy, classical complexity, and jazzy improvisation have earned them numerous accolades and garnered a dedicated following. Staples of the label, all but one of the band’s albums have topped the Billboard Bluegrass charts while also making strong crossover showings on the pop, rock, and folk charts.
This episode features recordings from their August 2022 performance under the tent.
During intermission Michael Perry shares a humorous or heartfelt (or both) story drawn from his beloved books and offbeat life experiences.

Family Farms on Fire
A while back I was interviewed about Forty Acres Deep by Brian Reisinger for a piece he was composing about family farms and the struggles they face. The piece by Brian is out now, and it’s a powerful summation of the bad, and (neighbors showing up in fire trucks) the good in the lives of contemporary small farm farmers.
The main piece, Fighting a fire and odds against survival for Wisconsin family farms is here. Subscription required.
A sidebar to the article, 5 factors that can help save Wisconsin family farms, and lives is here. Subscription required.

Laundromat Books
Copy-pasted this a while back and now can’t remember where I saw it written (in a review, maybe? or a social media comment?), but thank you to this reader, and thank you to whoever left the book there in the first place:
Population 485 was found at a laundromat across from UW-STOUT & read it & then returned it to whomever left it behind & went to borders(BAM now)& bought signed copy.
Moved me to dig up this photo from way back when I was on tour for Coop and writing on laundry day. Don’t remember which city.

Voice Mail Update
Recording in the little writing room above the garage. Nice antler placement. On the third anniversary of “Michael Perry’s Voice Mail,” we’re happy to say it has grown beyond our expectations–and keeps growing. We recently added “Mike’s Marginalia,” a new feature you can read about here along with other information about what Mike includes in these weekly recordings.
I started these “voice mails” as a way to maintain weekly contact, revisit and reflect on pieces from the past, share unpublished work, give advance looks at works in progress, and–this is new–revisit the scribbles I made in other people’s books over the years. Most of all I wanted it to be a relaxed, informal, and friendly “visit.” If you’re one of the thousands who’ve signed up, thank you. If you’re one of the thousands (billions!) who’ve never heard of it, I invite you to swing by for a visit. And yep, my main job is still typing. I’ll get back to that now. But as regular listeners know, I won’t say good-bye, I’ll just say… (if you know, you know).
– Mike

This Week’s Tent Show Radio: Forever Young – A Neil Young Retrospective
Check out Mike (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter: @SneezingCow) hosting Tent Show Radio (Twitter: @BigBlueTent). This week’s episode features “Forever Young – A Neil Young Retrospective.”
Led by Corey Carlson & Severin Behnen, the team that brought you “Big Top Does the Beatles” and “Back to the Garden: The Music of Woodstock,” take on the work of Neil Young in this Big Top original show. One of the most celebrated artists in popular music history, the Canadian-born, two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s music blurs the lines between rock, folk, & country with hints of other musical genres as well. His musicianship, lyrical style, and signature tenor voice have defined Young’s career and cemented him as one of the most influential artists of his generation. This retrospective celebrates some of Young’s popular hits and will dive deep into his legacy songs, bringing to light some of his lesser-known works.
During intermission Michael Perry shares a humorous or heartfelt (or both) story drawn from his beloved books and offbeat life experiences.
