“My First Tractor” (Free sample of Michael Perry’s audio Voice Mail)
Episode #229 of Michael Perry’s Voice Mail is about the tractor he grew up on. The episode is available to paid subscribers only, but if you’d like to give it a listen, please email orders@sneezingcow.com and we will get you a couple free weeks on us. Subscribers can listen here.
From Mike:
In this episode, I try something new: Randomly dipping into the “archives” (otherwise known as a bunch of mouse-nibbled boxes and plastic file containers stacked around one of my pole barns) and reacting to whatever I find.
On this first foray the topmost item was a 2011 issue of Wisconsin Trails, which included a piece I wrote about the first tractor my father ever bought new—a Massey-Ferguson 135. Looks like a toy now, but it was a big deal back then.
When you receive the email, be sure to scroll down through the photos to the “MARGINALIA” section, where we reveal an error in one of Mike’s books.

Thank You Scenes from The Road
Coming in off the road I’m always struck by how personal our events are and yet large enough that I can’t possibly personally thank everyone to whom I owe thanks, whether you help us set up, bought a book, or shared a kind word. We hustle, but we are rewarded for it, and thank you. Please sign up for our mailing list so we can catch you next time. And finally, here are some random scenes from what we call “the road.”

Forty Acres Deep: Farmers, Husbands, and Wives
…so many of the emails, letters, and comments I’ve received are from husbands (mostly) and wives who say it’s caused them to take a long look at their own marriage. And although I’m grateful to say I just celebrated 20 years with my wife and hope for many more, and although the book is fiction, I know when I wrote about Harold (the protaganist of Forty Acres Deep) facing his unvarnished shortcomings and regrets as a partner, well, for some of that I was looking at the man in the mirror. As I said in a recent radio interview (listen here):
Also, I am blessed to say that I just celebrated my 20th anniversary with a wife who is a partner in every way. And yet I know that I fail on a regular basis as a husband. I’m loyal, faithful and true, but it turns out there’s more to a successful marriage than that. And there are things said and unsaid in every marriage.
So, I was really hard on myself, looking at how I am in my marriage, and then inserted that into the character. And his troubles went to a much darker extreme than mine.
I have been known to joke that when it comes to marriage “the probationary period is perpetual,” but so is the self-review and improvement process.
A related reminder: we’ve put together a discussion guide for Forty Acres Deep. More info here.
Also, this Saturday Sep 14, 2024, my performance at The Pumphouse in La Crosse will include readings from Forty Acres Deep, followed by a brief discussion, lead by Dr. Michael Smith, PsyD from Emplify Health by Gundersen. You can grab your tickets here.

Mike took this photo while waiting to go live with Larry.Larry Meiller brought his popular Wisconsin Public Radio show to the beautiful Beaver Creek Reserve just a few miles from Mike’s farm, so Mike drove over for a visit on the air. Professional Noticer – Episode 307
Howdy Folks:
A few months back, I was an in-studio guest on The Professional Noticer with Andy Andrews
Andy and I are twins (well, or at least odd cousins) who–up until the week we did this interview–had never met. It was fun and meaningful to be able to chat in the same room, face-to-face over his amazing book desk. We discussed mentors, meanderings, and word choices amongst other topics–including my books and recordings, which can be found here.
You can watch, or listen to, the episode on your platform of choice.
FacebookYouTubeTwitterYou can also find the audio-only version on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and a handful of other places.
Andy’s book desk (coupla Perry titles in there).
