Intel Reader
[image error]Intel has been talking about their Reader for several months now and they had it on display it at last week's CES. Engadget has a hands-on demo video available (below).

Mark Steinmetz's South East: a Review
One of the first things I realized when I moved to Atlanta in 1997 was just how difficult it is to take a photograph between 11am and 5pm on a sunny summer day -- and summer here lasts pretty much from April until October. The sun appears magnified in its intensity, blowing out all but the darkest shadow areas and leaving only pure white and pure black. Pity the poor photographer, left with nothing in the middle, very few grays, no subtlety. The historical irony of this observance was not...

Are Your Employees Enthusiastic?
From the January 2010 Harvard Business Review comes The HBR List: Breakthrough Ideas for 2010:
Ask leaders what they think makes employees enthusiastic about work, and they’ll tell you in no uncertain terms... “Recognition for good work (either public or private)” came out number one.

Looking Back In Order to Look Forward
Inspired by my friend's post over on ALA TechSource, I decided to take a brief look back at the technology that I was using in 2000 and see how it compares to the gear I use today.
First up is my camera, which back in 2000 was a Nikon F100, which used film. I paid about 50 cents per print ($6 for decent film + $12 for good processing / 36 exposures) and I used a Nikon LS-2000 Coolscan scanner to (slowly/tediously) digitize the film. I then spent a few minutes per print in Photoshop (v5...

Make It So: Patrick Stewart Receives Knighthood
[image error]Photo by Andrew HillPatrick Stewart, one of my most favorite actors, has received a knighthood this week. I greatly enjoyed Stewart not only in Star Trek: TNG, but also on stage, where he really shines. I have been lucky to see him perform a one-man rendition of A Christmas Carol, and several Shakespearean dramas. Whether he is forcefully portraying the hard-edged diplomat Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: TNG, or the larger than life Claudius in Hamlet, Stewart always projects a huge stage...

The Sell: Vendors, Trust and Transparency
Meeting with vendors always makes me apprehensive, and the first few minutes of any interaction with a vendor will determine how I view them for a very long time. I have a tendency to thin slice sales pitches, and if things seem "off" then I am very quick to close the door on that vendor and her products. So what works and doesn't work in a vendor's pitch to this buyer?
1. Do make an effort to know my network and my organization. You may not know what my particular library uses as its ILS...
