Twice in a Blue Moon

It seems something no one would know or care about, a writer making sure the moon behaves correctly in their stories. But as anyone who has ever tried to write a novel will tell you, it's very easy to give every nighttime scene a gloriously moonlit landscape for the sake of literary convenience. But if one scene takes place roughly a fortnight after the other, there

A Haunted Writing Retreat

The hearth is the heart of a house, or so I have always believed. This is the open fire in the cottage I rented for two weeks this August, hoping to finish the sequel to Witchstruck while living there alone, with no distractions - especially as the nearest phone or internet signal was three miles away. No Facebook, no Twitter, no blogging ... just good solid writing every day.

Elizabeth I at Kenilworth, 1575: Warwick Words Festival

The Queen's Secret: set at Kenilworth

If you're based in the West Midlands, do please come and hear me talk about my research for The Queen's Secret at the Warwick Words Festival.

On Monday October 1st, I'll be discussing the secrets and the elaborate preparations behind Elizabeth I's epic visit to Kenilworth Castle in the summer of 1575. Cake and tea are included in the price, which you can

Writing Retreat

I have now taken myself away to a lonesome cottage on the North Yorks Moors where internet access is limited.

So please forgive the hiatus in posts as I finish the sequel to Witchstruck, surrounded by Tudor and witchcraft research books and inspirational items.

Back in two weeks!

Witchcraft in Tudor Times

Are these witches or historical writers in the fire?

Some small controversy seems to have arisen at History Today over a blog post I've contributed there. The post is on "Witchcraft in Tudor Times".

One key issue seems to be that I have referred to Dr John Dee without proper respect for his status as a man of science, pointing out that he openly summoned and spoke with spirits from the '

Round-Up Of This Week's News (with Kittens!)

Bo-Bo and Jangles, caught in the middle of planning something mischievous!

MAIN STORY: Two Gorgeous Kittens
This week we acquired two gorgeous dark tabby kittens, whom we have named Bo-Bo and Jangles. They are very cute but a little bit mischievous. As one might expect from eight week old kittens!

On the negative side, I don't think our Red Setter puppy is terribly pleased with their arrival.

South-West Signing

Signing copies of WITCHSTRUCK at Exeter Waterstones

I had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon on Saturday at the Exeter Roman Gate branch of Waterstones, signing copies of WITCHSTRUCK and meeting a large number of readers.

One of the most wonderful things about meeting young adult readers is how many express an interest in writing fiction themselves. One I met on Saturday had even recently

I'm signing copies of Witchstruck at Exeter Roman Gate branch of Waterstones (252 High Street) on Saturday August 11th from 1-3pm.

See, I'll be in good company with The Hungry

Author Discussion: Hampstead & Highgate Literary Festival

I'll be talking with Dr Helen Fry and fellow historical author Fiona Mountain at the Ham & High Literary Festival on Monday September 10th, 12.30 - 1.30pm.

Two historical fiction writers discuss the theme of betrayal with historian, Dr Helen Fry.

In Fiona Mountain's Cavalier Queen, Queen Henrietta Maria's love
of another man whilst married to King Charles I sustains her through
