Nora woke up from the restless sleep that had afforded her no peace or calm. She was tired and there was no two ways about it. She had been feeling restless of late. She sat next to the window and gazed at the neighborhood children playing in the street. She envied them their gaiety. She knew why she was restless and feeling insipid but she refused to consciously acknowledge it; she’d rather remain in denial.
Well, it was time to get ready for work. She got up, took a shower and tried to motivate herself to smile. Just as she had succeeded, she heard her phone ring and she braced herself subconsciously to answer it. Yes, she was right. It was Vin.
“Hello, Nora – I’m so glad you answered! How are you doing? Missed you, I want to hang out tonight.”
“I work late on Tuesdays, Vin.”
“My bad, how could I forget? Well, we can get together a little later then?”
“I’ll be too tired by then.”
“I’d really like to see you.” Nora grimaced. Why was it that the men who you looked to for short-term affairs were the ones that wanted you, and the ones you longed for something more from were the ones who weren’t interested after a few weeks?
She had met Vin at a grocery store and he had turned her on; the grace with which he moved and spoke aroused her. He also was very easygoing, while Nora was an impatient and agitated person by nature. She had learned to conceal this fact from people who met her, but it is who she was. Vin’s calm had soothed her and she had thought it worth pursuing, so, she had asked Vin out indirectly. They had seen a movie together, cooked dinner for each other at her place and gone sight-seeing. One evening while it rained and she was unable to get back to her place for an hour, she thought to herself, “What the hell…” and put out feelers to see if Vin was open to seduction. He was. So, he caressed her back and slipped his fingers into her bra. She smiled and hoped that he was a great lover, how she needed this! He was gentle and loved to kiss for long, burning minutes. Boy, did he taste good. So, they ended up on his carpet, and somehow she was on top, trailing her tongue down his midriff and enjoying the gasps she heard coming from him. They didn’t do the full deed that night but they sure came close to it. Nora chickened out because she wondered if she wasn’t making a mistake. Vin had wanted them to proceed but he went along with her decision and called her the next day to ask her if they could get together that evening.
She had avoided committing herself to an answer because she was worried about what she was getting herself into. Vin was supposed to be her bon-bon – her good-time lover - but she sensed that he wanted more, just like her last bon-bons did. Francis had started out casual for her. She had enjoyed the attention that he had lavished on her. She had just come out of a painful relationship, and Francis was so sweet and nice. She thought, “What the hell?” and went ahead, enjoying the wonderful things they did to each other. The problem was, Francis wanted her for keeps. She wasn’t ready, and just couldn’t see herself in a long-term relationship with him. For one thing, he was too controlling and he seemed to have several female friends, which he would explain away. She could tell that he really cared about her, though. He was always trying to reach for her hands in public places and was possessive of her when other men were around. She found it hilarious because she didn’t see the big deal, she wasn’t with those guys… but then again, she wasn’t with Francis either.
The sex with Francis had been like eating chocolate éclairs, hidden but ohhh-soooo creamy. Oh damn, she was getting horny just thinking about him. What to do about Vin? He was getting worse every day. Too needy, too clingy. It was time to move on to another bon-bon. Did she really need a bon-bon? Yes, yes, her body told her. Ok, she needed a bon-bon. As nice as Vin was, what could she do with him? What she wanted was a challenge, a zing to her body. Someone who, just by the mention of his name and his voice, would drive her insane… pure and simple lust that would be the cure to her passivity and emotional dryness.
Nora’s friend, Stella had a get together/party to celebrate her buying her first home on a Friday evening. Stella was an accountant at a Fortune 500 firm and she was moving up - both in her professional field and her social circles. Nora admired Stella greatly; she was so classy and yet so down to earth. She was one person that Nora could have intelligent conversations with. Nora was looking forward to the event because Stella had an interesting mix of friends and acquaintances.
The evening arrived and she was perplexed about what to wear, and went through her wardrobe with a sense of trepidation. Nothing seemed appropriate. Finally, she decided on a pair of loose silk black trousers and a shiny blouse, which was a bit sheer. She wore a white lacey camisole underneath the blouse. Next she started to work on her face. She wanted to look natural and yet finished. The sheer look was in and it suited her better. As she dressed up, she played her favorite 80’s mix CD. It always made her feel giddy and ready to party. She played it in her car on her way to Stella’s place. She accidentally got off at the wrong exit and drove around a bit, trying to find a familiar road. Finally, after driving in circles for about 15-20 minutes, she stopped at a gas station to ask for directions.

ExcerptSitting straight up in bed, I gasped and threw myself back against the headboard, the thud dying away along with the remaining shreds of my dream.
But the word still ricocheted through my mind.
Aswang.
Until yesterday, I hadn't thought of the term in years—not since I'd left Houston for med school in Maine, determined to get as far away from home as I could.
But this resurgence of the same, odd illness that had swept my city years before was apparently also dredging up the old stories from deep in my subconscious: the aswang, a vampiric woman who lived a quiet life by day and fed on children in the night, flying back home on bat-wings just before dawn.
My unconscious mind had clearly also expanded on the idea, casting me in the role of aswang and adding schizoid conversations with a chorus of internal voices.
Great. I'm insane in my dreams.
And I'm a monster.
Shuddering, I wiped my hand across my gritty, raw eyelids.

Guest Blog and Giveaway The Last Guardian Rises by Rebecca Trogner

I get asked a lot why I wrote about vampires, and almost always my answer is the same, because I was pissed off at how vampires were being portrayed. So peeved, in fact, that I got off my lazy butt and started to write a book that I’d want to read.
Vampires are incredibly malleable. I think that’s what makes them so popular in cinema and fiction. They can be mindless, serial killers or pensive and cultured, or anything in between. So while I applaud all the different types of vampires, I don’t find myself attracted to some of the recent variations on vampires.
Here are my Top Five Gripes about how vampires are written and portrayed.
Too Much Angst. I don’t mind a bit of introspection, but lately a lot of vampires have been navel gazers, and that’s never attractive. I don’t want to listen to an almost immortal creature complaining about it. I want to hear what they’ve seen and done and hope they find me a worthy recipient of their information.
No Sex. I know, I know, the original vampire, Dracula, did not have intercourse, but, as with everything else in the world, things have changed since 1897 when Bram Stoker’s book was published. I want the vampire to stalk his human prey not only for food, but for a little sexy time too.
Too Much Sex. I need story to go along with the sex, and some novels I’ve read lately are all about the humpapalooza and nothing else. Yes, I did just make up that word.
Not Neck Biters. Is there anything sexier about the vampire then the way they desire our blood. It’s the one thing that humans have that vampires crave. They are as bound to us as we are them, and it’s damn sexy to imagine the seduction and eventual submission to a hungry vampire.
High School. It’s hard to get all excited about a vampire who still goes to high school. I want mature, worldly, and confident vampires to swoop me off my feet.
So…what are your favorite and least favorite types of vampires?

He came back cradling what looked like a journal in his large hands. It was bound in leather with a faded black ribbon tied around the covers.
“Fell, I guess.”
Lily knew it couldn’t have fallen on its own. And why didn’t the lights come on when it moved? She took the offered book from Liam and rubbed her hand over the old leather. Someone had taken great care to keep it oiled and the leather supple as sin. For now, its contents were silent. Not all texts spoke with her – perhaps this one would later, or never would.
“Ready?” Liam opened the door and waited for her to follow.
Her mind said no, definitely not ready to see Krieger, but her heart beat faster, and she remembered his cool, calm voice, and how she loved the ambiguous color of his hypnotic bluegrey eyes. The night before Lily’s mother was discovered and she’d fatally stabbed Henry, Lily had argued with Krieger. From this vantage, Lily could see how trivial her protestations were. She’d felt he’d betrayed her, though he hadn’t, and because of her, Krieger had staunched the flow of blood through the bond they shared. Now, just a hint of warmth was flowing through her body, that feeling of being connected to him again, that tiny bit of delicious balm soothing her worries.

Eleanor Baines ran down the deserted street. Pain throbbed in her arm, and blood dripped down her sleeve. She couldn’t believe the damn vampire killer had nicked her with a blade that was coated with hallowed mud. Usually the assholes sported a tattoo of a dagger stabbing an opened-mouthed skull with long incisors, but this kid didn’t have one. Luckily, she had built a resistance over the years to hallowed mud, but it wasn’t enough. Her muscles were weakening, and her vision was becoming blurry. Donna pass out. She glanced over her shoulder. The chubby killer hurried after her and would soon overtake her. He’d surprised her at the post office when she went to open her safe deposit box. Her fault. She hadn’t thought he’d be threat—he wasn’t even sixteen. How had he known she would be there at midnight? She had even used a pseudonym. Her heart beat hard, and each time, terror thumped between her temples. Nausea gripped her stomach. Damn! The poison was working swiftly, breaking down organs and closing up veins. Only human blood would stop the shutdown of her system. Her mountain home was a mile away, and she’d never make it in time to drink the harvested blood in her refrigerator.She glanced over her shoulder to find the damn killer gaining on her. Is she okay?” Eleanor couldn’t make out who was saying what. All she saw were a pair of athletic shoes, a pair of black cowboy boots, and a pair of loafers. She was lifted into strong arms and carried into a bar. Beer and sweat clung to the air. She laid her head against the man’s naked chest, clamping her mouth shut to keep from biting him. “You’re safe now, sweetheart,” the man said. But he wasn’t. He set her down in a bathroom, and she winced at the bright light. “What’s your name?” he asked. “Eleanor Baines.” Her voice was strained. Not nervous wreck strained. But hysterical eye-witness strained. Why the hell did she tell him her real name? He examined her bleeding arm gently and frowned. “It doesn’t look deep, but you probably need to go to the hospital and have it stitched.” He grabbed some paper towels and wet them. “I’m Jayden Kye.” “I’ll be fine,” she said. In the blaring light, Jayden was handsome with high cheek bones and firm chin. Dark eye-lashes emphasized those deep-set eyes. “Yeah, sure you will.” He dabbed her wound with the paper towels. “This isn’t going to stop the bleeding.” She stared at his lips, and self-preservation took over. Pulling on the last of her remaining strength, she drew on her vampire magnetism. Janus had taught her to put her victims into a trance, take what she needed, and then erase their memories. She didn’t like doing it, and she preferred the blood bags at home, but her life force was draining fast. He dropped to his knees, and the paper towels slowly fell out of his hands. The familiar blank stare fell over his eyes. Guilt hit Eleanor. Jayden had protected her from the kid, and how did she repay him? By stealing his blood. “Sorry, Jayden,” she gasped. She pushed his hair back from his neck with her shaking hand then bit into his flesh. His blood was hot, warm, and spicy. She sucked hard and grabbed his shoulders. It had been so long since she’d fed from a man. Men still scared her, even though she knew was stronger. She licked his neck and healed his wound. He tasted like lemon and sage. She was tempted to lick his delicious body filled her, but she shook her head.No.She gazed into his handsome face. Voices came down the hall, and she had to get out of there fast before they discovered her attacker was telling the truth. Unable to resist, she kissed his lips, but he was frozen and didn’t respond. Why was she disappointed? He was a handsome man, and she’d met many of those, tasted them. None of them stirred her the way Jayden had. Was it because he’d saved her and she’d been alone for so long? She shook her head and sighed. This wasn’t meant to be. Eleanor didn’t seduce men. Besides, kissing had led to clumsy coupling that she never enjoyed. No matter how she tried to forget it, the horrible night she’d been attacked and raped had ruined any pleasure she’d endured from any man, so she stayed away from them. She couldn’t recall the last time she’d been with a man, or even desired one. Until tonight.But how could she resist this champion? He’d stood up for her and saved her life, even tended her wounds. She glanced at her arm. It had stopped bleeding and was slowly healing. Human blood was a fast a healer. But she needed more. “Good-bye, hero,” she said. “Thank you for saving my life. She had no idea why she was thanking him and reassuring him that she would be safe—he couldn’t hear her nor would he remember her. But she’d remember him. Well, maybe she’d take one more thing from him. She glanced at the closed door and Jayden. Wanting to treasure him, she indulged in her fantasy and licked his chest. It tasted even better than his neck. The voices grew louder as men gathered outside the door. Their conversation froze her spine. “Desmond, why did your nephew have that damn blade?” “It’s an heirloom. Been in the family for years. You didn’t have to call the police.”Eleanor shook. Grand. She’d been in the den of vampire killers. Time to get out of here. The doorknob started to turn. “Yeah, I did. Keep your nephew on a leash.” Jayden’s blood had replenished her enough to escape. The door opened, and she flashed out of the bathroom. She was faster than the human eye and sped past the surprised men. Lord, she recognized Desmond Carver. So, Emmet Carver’s family still possessed blades designed to kill vampires. Desmond sported the dreaded tattoo on his shaved head—a dagger stabbing an opened-mouthed skull with long incisors. The mark of a vampire killer.

Guest Blog: Holiday Cruise by Erzabet Bishop

Hello and thanks for having me on the blog today! My name is Erzabet Bishop and I'm the author of the new interactive romance Holiday Cruise. The story revolves around a young woman on her first vacation as a college student. The holidays are about to get even more festive with all the choices you'll have in your e-reader.

Interview and Giveaway Snow Blood by Carol McKibben

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I was a magazine publisher/editor for approximately 20 years. In 2007, I began my own writing/editing/marketing business. One of the things I love most about this new “career” is helping other writers complete their work. I have a Master’s degree in English, Journalism and Secondary Education. And, I taught writing before I got into the magazine game. What do I love about the paranormal genre? It’s just such fun! I’ve always read any and everything vampire-related. The one that scared me to death was Stephen King’s ‘Salem’s Lot. I’ve been hooked since I was a kid!
What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
Who wouldn’t want to be eternally young and strong? So many versions exist in literature about their capabilities; their potential weaknesses. I find them hypnotic.
What inspired you to write this book?
I write through the eyes of a dog. I had just published Luke’s Tale, and my publisher was hanging out with me. I’m big into dog rescue and had just placed a white husky with blue eyes named Snow in a “forever home.” My publisher was teasing me with the “What’s next?” question. Then, she smiled and said, “How about a vampire dog?” And, I said, “Named Snow … Snow Blood.” Next, I wanted to research the legends of how the first vampire was created. So, I went to the Vampire Bible for it.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Snow Blood Season 1, the first in a series, is my latest book. When Brogio, the original or first vampire, turns Snow, a beautiful white husky, in order to save the dog, a series of events are unleashed that reveal a sinister plot against the father of all vampires. Life and true death experiences bond the master vampire and his newly transformed vampire canine together as they unravel a conspiracy. When resolved, this conspiracy may return Selene, the love of Brogio’s life, back to him and set him free from the lonely existence that has plagued him for thousands of years.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
Honestly, no. Well, let me correct that. Sometimes it is by chance. Sometimes it just clicks for me. For instance, Luke in Luke’s Tale was patterned after my real dog, Luke. So, the name was inherited. But, I named a character Sara because that’s my second favorite name. I debated on naming my daughter Stephanie or Sara. I went with Stephanie, so now I have a Sara too! Oh, and you’ll love this. I named a character Ashlundt after a name I saw on a truck!
To get a little more specific, I named the wolves in Snow Blood’s pack to reflect their characteristics. Gaspar is a total guard. Chase is a hunter. Scrawny is, well, scrawny. Fergus is the wise one. You get the picture. All those names are related to their main characteristic. Brogio is short for Ambrogio, the original vampire from the Vampire Bible. Selene is related to the moon. If you read the story, you’ll know why.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
I found Brogio to be somewhat of a challenge. I wanted him to be strong, stoic, stubborn, handsome, yet full of loneliness and hiding a tender heart. I wanted him to reflect the utter loneliness of a man who has lived thousands of years without the fulfillment of the woman he loves.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
Oh, I love writing the dog narrators of my stories the very best. I’ve worked with dogs for years, so it’s fun for me to incorporate what I have learned about them into my stories.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
I always start with character sketches. But for me, it is like what William Faulkner said, “It begins with a character, usually, and once he stands up on his feet and begins to move, all I can do is trot along behind him with a paper and pencil trying to keep up long enough to put down what he says and does.” And, that has been the way it has been for me. I have an idea, but the character usually takes over and writes himself/herself!
What is your favorite scene from the book? Could you share a little bit of it, without spoilers of course?
Because everyone already knows the story is narrated by a vampire dog, I can share a little of what happens when Brogio turns Snow into a vampire. I don’t like to pick favorites. It’s like asking me which of my children I like best!
The pain sliced into my ribs like steel on bone. Then, nothingness.Searing pain, and the sight of two snarling, rabid beasts locked in battle, interrupted the safety of my void. The scent of their blood-filled rage made my nose twitch. My brain screamed "move" but my legs disobeyed. Paralyzed on the ground, I watched as two giant beasts circled each other, lumbering dangerously close. One, an unknown, unnatural brother who could stand on hind legs. The other ... a demon, perhaps? That was the best way I could describe this otherworldly creature. My eyes began to focus. I could see blood-covered fangs and claws, a demon strangely glowing in the lunar light. It looked "moon-kissed”. Light from the night-time sun caressed this deformed creature. Perhaps I'm imagining this? Maybe it's my love of the moon. I've always felt its protection at night on my forays into the woods near my home.Jaws snapping. The upright wolf-being lunged. The demon creature moved faster, almost a blur. It hastily side-stepped the wolf's bite as easily as a mongoose avoids a cobra. The wolf snarled its frustration. It circled the moon-kissed demon that appeared to be taunting its opponent. I tried to move to observe better, but pain savagely raked through me. A dark circle of wetness surrounded me. The air reeked with the smell of ... blood. My blood.Why had I recklessly left the comfort of my home? The fireplace in the den warmed us against the outside of fall's cold weather. Perhaps I needed adventure. Prey lurked in the outside darkness, and instinctively, I had wanted to give chase. My little human tried to tackle me just as I dashed to the kitchen and nosed aside the flap from the back door to the freedom of the night that beckoned me."Snow! Don't go out there. It's dark!" He squirmed, trying to hold me. He weighed less than any little subaltern laying his body across my shaggy mass. Embarrassing, I thought, since I outranked him in the pack. But, I never snapped at him. My little human needed my protection."Let him go, Tommy. He's just doing his job; keeping the coyotes away." Tommy's father, our Alpha, had spoken, and we must all obey.The little human stood upright and slowly released his grip on my back. Moments later, I was chasing coyotes across the front lawn and out into the street, doing what I did best – protecting my pack. Now, as the sound of gnashing teeth brought me back into the present, I wished for the chance to better safeguard them. Who would warn my humans of this danger if I didn't make it home? The two creatures battled on. The wolf leaped over its combatant's head, narrowly avoiding a crushing blow to its leg. The glowing demon blurred, quickly avoiding an attack from the rear. It spun just in time to avoid its throat from being taken. Suddenly, fall leaves were flying into the air. They hit the grass under the trees that lined the abandoned road and tumbled, arms and heads over legs.My paws quivered as the fight drew closer to me. Inexplicitly, I remained unable to move from where I had landed after the pain hit me. My energy had already seeped from my body. Running away appeared no longer an option.I watched as the fierce beasts arose quickly from their tumble. The wolf gained an advantage, lunging forward and extending its claws as the demon stumbled over a broken tree trunk. Its opportune fall to the ground enabled the demon to duck the razor-sharp claws. Just missing the demon, the wolf landed and rolled behind its enemy. Quickly, it spun up to go after its prey now sprawled out on the grass. Just as the wolf leaped, BOOM. A loud explosion ... and then the wolf crumpled to the ground with a pained yelp and a heavy thud. His lifeless body sprawled awkwardly on the dirt. A strange voice pierced through my head. "Silver bullets work well on panweres, too." A malicious chuckle followed.Was that the demon's voice? I wondered. Surely I did not see his lips moving.The demon creature knelt over its victim and poked the wolf's body. No sign of life. Triumphantly, it threw back its head and let out a victory scream that made the hairs on my neck bristle. It then rose to cast its appraising gaze in my direction. I struggled to get my feet under me, fearing that if I didn't, the demon would kill me on this spot, just as he had taken the life of the wolf. As it approached me, I felt my life slowly drain away; the darkness enveloped me again. The sadness of never seeing my family again lingered ...Darkness closed over me ... drifting into ... an overwhelming itchy sensation? My nerve endings were on fire, consuming me with a new-found rush. The thin line of life spread throughout me. Every fiber of my body stood on end as the blood-filled eyes of the demon pierced mine. A thin drop of blood clung to one of its fangs before descending onto my face in slow motion. I tried to move but the creature held me in place with one giant claw-covered hand. Other than the weight of its massive body, I felt no trace of the initial pain that had sent me into darkness.I watched transfixed as the creature transformed into a human. First claws became large hands. It shrunk only slightly. Its deformed body took the shape of a strong, muscular athlete. Its distorted visage faded into a handsome face with a strong nose, cheek bones and jaw. It was only seconds until it became a naked man. It spoke. "Hold still, dog. Let your body absorb my venom and heal."Venom? Heal me? Fire streaked through my veins, forcing every part of me to come alive. An unfamiliar strength enveloped me. I had been crippled only moments ago. Now, every part of me sprang to life. My eyes never left the demon/man. Blonde and fair, a pale face framed large violet-colored eyes that transitioned back to red and again to violet. He towered over me; his long, muscular frame stretched over what must have been almost a half-head taller than James, my master. I once heard my master brag, "I'm six-foot-one in my stocking feet." I guess that was his way of stating how tall he is.The demon/man wiped the blood from his face onto his hand. My blood, or his? I wasn't sure."All right," he commanded, "try to get up now."I sprang to all fours, shook my heavy white coat and sat back on my haunches. How did I get on this deserted road in the middle of the woods? Prey. That's it. Chasing prey. The large black car with Oregon plates sitting sideways in the road next to us, lights on, motor running, looked as though it had swerved to avoid something. Had it collided with me? The man knelt down and patted my head. "Confused are you? That's right, I hit you."I cocked my head at him, feeling better than before. How could he have hit me? I got a whiff of his odor. A layer of perfume concealed the smell of death and something rotten that had emanated from the demon during its battle with the wolf. I stood and shook my whole body again, as if to expel the experience and the smell. Then I turned away to go back home."Wait!" He placed a firm grip on my back with his strong, human hands.I whipped my head around, baring teeth in warning. Let me go! I had to go home to my loving family and the warm fire that awaited me. He stared at me. "No, that's an insane thought." Was he speaking to me? Was he reading my mind? He paused for a long moment, staring at me as if he could see through me. I shivered from the menacing touch of his hand on my back.He released his grip. His shoulders slumped, and he ran a bloody hand through his blonde hair. He took a long, deep breath, then shook his head. "Come with me."I watched him move toward the car. I had to go home. My people must be worried. He turned to me, and I felt drawn to him. No, I must go home. "There is no choice, dog. Come with me."No! The hackles on my back stood on end in warning. I will go home! I backed away, growling in defiance. I turned to run, but he blocked my path to freedom and caught me in a heartbeat.He stopped me in my tracks. How could this human outrun me?He grabbed my head with his bloody hands and twisted my face to meet his blood-red eyes. "You will come with me now! It is for your survival and that of your people." He let go and stood tall again. He took two long strides to the car. Over his shoulder he commanded, "Come!"I resisted with everything that I had. He opened a door to the large sedan and motioned for me to take the passenger seat. I tried to resist again but my legs disobeyed me, and I covered the short space and jumped in. He slammed the door behind me.I growled as I watched him cross in front of the car and open the driver's door. A black turtleneck sweater and black pants hung on the back of the driver's seat. Black loafers and socks sat on the floor in front of the seat. He reached inside for them and hurriedly put them on, never taking his eyes from me. His gaze was creeping me out. Intense.Sliding behind the wheel, he looked at me for a long minute. "You're my responsibility now. Let's go find you something to eat. You will need your strength."I didn't like his toothy grin. What wasn't he telling me?I found it odd that my ravenous cravings for something ... something very bloody outweighed all other reason.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
Definitely. While reading the Vampire Bible, I found an origin to vampires that had never been pursued before. I used the mythology with the gods and expanded it throughout the book.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
The book is set in winter. It’s cold, but vampires don’t feel heat or cold. However, they utilize the fireplace as a gathering place. They can’t feel it, but it reinvents the memory of it in their minds. I made Brogio a wine maker with a vast wine empire around the world so that I could move him and his coven anywhere I wanted to that has wine making! It’s set in modern times but I’ve tried to keep a little of the old world flair to it by always making the surroundings somewhat isolated.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
In Season 1, Selene is beautiful but dependent upon Brogio, Snow Blood and Kane. Her personality doesn’t begin to shine until Season 2. In Season 2, she becomes an incredibly strong, fast, head-strong creature. The books can be read as stand-alones, but why? I wouldn’t think of reading a book series without reading them all! That’s the fun of it!
Do any of your characters have similar characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
Maybe Snow Blood has my independence and loyalty to those he loves in the direst of circumstances. Other than that, not really. After all, my mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives! (If you know where that quote derives, you’re my kind of person!)

Do you have any weird writing quirks or rituals?
I have a favorite font I like to use when I’m writing. I like the way it looks on the page. I always need my dogs in the room with me.
Do you write in different genres?
Yes, I wrote a memoir entitled, Riding Through It. That one is actually free on my Web site. And Luke’s Tale is a family drama with a bit of a twist. Of course, I’m doing the totally paranormal thing now, but I want to write a quirky tragedy-comedy at some point.
When did you consider yourself a writer?I started writing when I was a little kid. When I was in high school (14 years of age), my Daddy read some of my stories and looked at me and pronounced, “You’re a writer.” And, I believed him.What are your guilty pleasures in life?I love horses and chocolate, not necessarily together.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I’m passionate about my horse. We compete in classical dressage together. He’s a 16.2 hand, black Friesian (like the horse Antonio Banderas rode in Zorro.) I’ve been doing this for about 14 years.
What was the last amazing book you read?
I finally got around to reading Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. I enjoyed it. But, in the amazing category, The Art of Racing in the Rain. I’m reading A Big Little Life by Dean Koontz right now. (A fellow dog lover.) I’m in love with it.
Where is your favorite place to read? Do you have a cozy corner or special reading spot?
Outside on the patio next to the pool, or in bed!
What can readers expect next from you?
I am working on Snow Blood Season 2. Want to get it out early 2015. My publisher wants me to write at least one or two more after that.

The front door to the house swung open. Brogio returned from disposing of our victims. Dry blood covered his black sweater and spattered on his face and hands. His voice sliced through my thoughts. “The voice you question – most likely Artemis. She is forever a frienemy. She’s up to something, I suppose.” Brogio sat down in his favorite chair next to the fireplace.A “frienemy”? I didn’t know what he meant.“Artemis pretends to be my friend when it pleases her.” Brogio picked at the blood on his sweater. “But, she’s a god, and they all play games. They delight in the misery of others.”A god? Like the one Tommy says his prayers to at night?Brogio rubbed his hands over his face like he was trying to think of the best way to explain to me. “No, not The God. A god. Immortal beings that play with humans and other creatures to amuse themselves.”They really exist? James used to read Tommy stories about gods in ancient times. I always listened too. I shifted on my haunches. This piqued my interest.“Yes, they really exist. Just like vampires, werewolves, monsters and all the other creatures that humans want to believe are myths.” Brogio stood and stretched.Does she want to use me against you? Is it a game? I thought.“Not sure yet ... I need to figure out who is stalking me, what he, or she, wants.” He waved for me to follow him up the stairs. We entered a large bedroom decorated with textured, soft materials. My human pack had never known such riches. I walked to the huge canopy bed covered with exotic mauve and gold colors. I could see them ... all my senses – sight, sound, taste, feel – were heightened. I sniffed the bed. “Ah, so you like my mahogany bed?” I barked once in approval.“Great. Well, stay off it. I don’t need to find dog hairs when I’m entertaining ladies.” Brogio laughed and strolled over to a large closet where he selected another black sweater that covered his neck and black pants. He pulled clean underwear from a nearby large mahogany chest that matched his bed. He stepped into a large sunken shower made of marble and glass in the adjoining bathroom and washed himself thoroughly, especially scrubbing away the blood from his face and hands, before toweling off and stepping into clean clothes. I took that moment to assess him. He reminded me of one of those handsome movie stars that Tommy’s mother Jeanne loved to watch on the large-screen “television” at home. His chiseled face, strong muscular physique and long pale blonde hair would have made her sigh, as she often did while watching her favorite actors. “I have a wine tasting in a few days. Let’s go into Newburg to arrange the food for the event.” He motioned for me to follow.But won’t I be recognized? People, even my humans, might see me. I gazed up at him questioning his logic.“You’ll stay in the car. It has tinted windows. No one will see you.” He headed down the stairs and through the door to the right. It connected to the place he kept his cars. I obeyed and followed, but the hungering thirst returned. I whimpered.“Don’t worry. I’ll make a visit to the hospital blood bank on the way home.” He turned to me and opened the passenger door. “Don’t want you trying to sustain yourself the normal way. After what we just experienced, a trail of dead bodies will surely lead back to us.”Will I always be hungry like this? I wondered how I could keep myself fed without eating blood all the time. My stomach knotted with my hunger.“No. It’s part of the transformation process. You will learn in time to curb your cravings.” He rubbed my head with his hand and gave me a sympathetic look. Suddenly, I was having second thoughts about Brogio. Perhaps he wasn’t so bad after all. Even if he did ram me with his car and turn me into some bloodthirsty vampire dog.

Hounded by ancient gods and goddesses, monsters, werewolves and a number of disasters, they battle to protect each other. In his effort to protect his master and those he loves, Snow must make a promise that will end his life as he knows it. The true source bent on destroying Brogio is finally revealed and culminates in an epic battle where Snow offers up his life to save Brogio, Selene and Kane.
Episode Six – Snow prepares to keep the promise that he made, but Kane intervenes for his “blood brother,” leaving us to wonder about both their fates. Tension grows between Brogio and Selene as he attempts to make her his wife for eternity and defy the gods. The reader discovers if Selene is his love returned to him.

Carol McKibben graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Secondary Education and a minor in Journalism. She went on to earn a Master’s of Arts in Teaching (MAT) from Rollins College. After teaching English and Journalism for a decade, she was offered the opportunity to join Miramar Communications, the 8th largest publishing house west of the Mississippi in Los Angeles.
Working her way up from editorial and then as Director of Market Development, she became the publisher of Special Events magazine (a trade publication for all those working in the events industry) that she helped launch in 1984. In addition, she created a companion trade show, The Special Event, for which she was also the director for a decade, planning every aspect – from exhibits to educational conferences and events.
During that time, she earned her Certified Special Events Professional (CSEP) designation and helped found the International Special Events Society (ISES) of which she was international president from 1999-2000. She co-authored The Dictionary of Event Management for ISES and helped write the study guides for the CSEP exam.
She was a magazine publisher for both consumer and trade magazines for 20+ years. She has written numerous articles and conducted a myriad of seminars, often speaking to large audiences for both The Special Event and ISES. She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the special events industry in 1999.
In 2007, she began a freelance writing and editing career, working with other authors to help them realize their dreams. She has published Luke’s Tale, Riding Through It and Snow Blood Season 1. Luke’s Tale and Snow Blood are targeted to a YA market. Luke’s Tale was included in the Summer Solstice Top 12 Book Pick List. Carol writes from the heart of a dog’s eyes. Her books help support her dog rescue efforts and focus on unconditional love.
Carol is married to Mark McKibben, a broadcast engineering sales professional and experienced airplane pilot, and they have two grown children, Rett and Stephanie, and three grandchildren, Lauren, Diesel and Slater. Their current “babies” are Neo, their 117-lb. Labradoodle, a trained therapy dog, and Binks, a black Labrador Retriever rescue. Together Mark and Carol work with the Los Angeles Animal Rescue and Wings of Rescue to save the precious lives of endangered dogs.
Carol is a firm believer in Maya Angelou’s quote:” I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” She believes that angels were her inspiration for Luke’s Tale – a Story of Unconditional Love and feels that even though the Snow Blood Series is about the original vampire and his kindred dog, that theme carries through. “There’s a method to my madness,” she states. “The world is waiting for love to overcome hate. I feel that my purpose is to show others how to love unconditionally, just as dogs love us we should love each other.”
Carol’s other favorite quote is one that her husband taught her. “I love myself more when I am with you.”

5-Stars - "SNOW BLOOD Season 1 is a unique novel in that McKibben has elected to tell a story through the eyes, senses, and thoughts of an animal. For some authors this attempt may become uncomfortably artificial, but McKibben is so gifted at the manner in which she maintains this stance that every page of the novel is wholly credible. Add to that fact the theme of the story being the turning of non-vampires into vampires and one would think the author was up against an unscalable wall of credibility. But that is the mark of a practiced veteran: understand the stance of the perspective, keep it viable, and the story will work.
And work SNOW BLOOD Season 1 most assuredly does. He bent down and looked deeply into my eyes. "What is your name?" My thoughts betrayed me as my legs had earlier. I felt compelled to answer. My name is Snow. "Ah, yes. Snow. I shall call you Snow ... Blood. You can call me Brogio." I heard the words, but his mouth didn't move. He took another sip from his glass and smiled. "That's right; you're hearing my thoughts. Spoken words will not be needed between us now." He held up his glass. I wondered what was in the glass. "This is wine from my winery. Vintage 1985." I was relieved that he wasn't drinking a glass of blood in front of me. So tell me, Brogio, why do we not need words? Again, the smile. The eyes turned deep red for a fraction of a second. A cold chill coursed through me, and I shivered. I wanted to run, but where? This Brogio could outrun me. And he could read my mind too! Anger rose up, and I let out a reflexive growl. "I am an Artemis. Animals understand and obey me. It is the way. And now, I am your sire." If you control animals, why did the strange wolf attack you? "I have no control over panweres." Panweres? Never heard of them. What ... "A shape shifter. A creature that can shift into many different kinds of animals." He stood straight up. "Come, you must feed. We can talk more later." I want to go home. "No, you can't. It would be dangerous." He kneeled down next to me. "Snow Blood, you would end up killing those you love until I can teach you to control your urges." I shook my head from side to side. I don't understand. He sighed and returns to the oversized chair, taking a long drink of the remaining wine. I sat firmly in place. I refused to go anywhere until I understood what he meant. "Snow." He sat back in the chair as if ready to tell me a story, "You are becoming a vampire. And, Only a vampire can make another." He stared at me to let the words sink in. "You died on the road, and I turned you to bring you back."

5-Stars! "Exquisite Vampire Novel - Brogio is the first vampire created by the goddess Artemis. Brogio creates the first vampire dog who he names Snow Blood. At first Snow Bolood resists being "vampire." As time passes, he accepts being "vampire" and is loyal to Brogio. He learns about Brogio's life and his lost love. Snow Blood tells this stunning story that has mystery, romance, mythology and horror in it. This makes for a fantastic read! Does Brogio find his lost love? How does Brogio survive in the world besides making a living? Why does a vampire dog not be affected by the sun? This is an excellent vampire novel. There are twists and turns you don't expect. I enjoyed this "vampire" novel more than any of the other vampire stories I have read with the exception of the original Bram Stoker's Dracula. This is a strong not to be missed! 5-Star - "Excellent Vampire Read! Snow Blood: Season 1: Episodes 1-6 was an excellent read that really took me by surprised. I was intrigued by the plot, as it sounded like a story that I have never read before. The concept is pretty amazing, and definitely did not disappoint at all. The Husky dog, Snow, tells the story of how he came about meeting his master, Brogio. I have never read a story where a dog is a vampire as well, which made this one so likable (I love dogs!).
This story contains pretty much everything; from mystery to suspense, to romance and deep questioning. The relationship between Brogio and Selene was quite interesting, and I am curious to see what will happen next. Reading the story through Snow's eyes made the story even better.

5-Stars - "Snow Blood Episode 1 was a real surprise find for me. Being a dog person, I was tempted but I only reluctantly ventured out to read this book about a white husky who becomes vampire. To my relief and joy the concept really worked. Snow, the husky, tells in his own words how he comes in contact with Brogio, his saviour and master, and how his new life pans out. Telling a vampire dog story adds a great twist, one that is long overdue since we have shapeshifters and werewolve stories everywhere. Telling the story from the dog's perspective worked for me since it is a welcome break from just 'cute' dog stories and stories told by dogs. Episode 1 sets the scene and focuses on the transformation and the main characters, but it is ultimately a short novel that leaves a lot for the next installments. The drama, the suspense and the perspective are excellent, and I no doubt will make my way through this canine paranormal series. Well done." -Christoph Fischer
