A poem from the collection:

In the Clearing
Chasing butterflies I found you in the clearingbathed in sunlight soft and sweetWillow wisp and grass litheyour body was the rock that grounded me
Butterflies fluttered byas I tasted your desirewild on the air, thick as honeyI kissed your lips to ease your need
Nature stood sentinel around ustestament to beauty, love, creationKeeper of primordial secretsGuard of our private playground
Butterfly kisses and tongue tickling caresseslove made blissful in sunlight glowMore than just a roll in the haya union of souls in dewy morning grass
You touched my soul as I held your heartButterfly whimsy and childish delight, laughter and love sounds broke the silence of the woodBare sweat and dew drenched limbs lay tangled in sun glow
Breathless bodies eventually partedFull of joy and love soaked energyDrunk off passion playNot quite ready to face a busy day
Never wanting to leavebut there was work to doI followed the butterfliesbut they always led me back to you

 About the Author:
Sam Crescent is passionate about fiction. She loves a good erotic romance and so it only made sense for her to spread her wings and start writing. She began writing in 2009 and finally got that first acceptance in 2011.
She loves creating new characters and delving into the worlds that she creates. When she’s not panicking about a story or arguing with a character, she can be found in her kitchen creating all kinds of havoc. Like her stories the creations in the kitchen can be just as dubious but sometimes things turn out great.

Guest Blog and Giveaway -Bottle Banished: Dreaming of Genie by C.L. Riley

Fiction is fiction, right? Of course, silly question; however, the places in fictional stories are sometimes the “real deal” other times imaginary and other times a unique combination of both real and imaginary. Are you confused yet?
Don’t be!
With fiction, authors get a lot of leeway in their writing. We get to create and paint vivid pictures of worlds that exist only in our minds, but even with the option of so many fantastical elements at our disposal, sometimes actual places add to the realism of a story. As is the case in my new book, Bottle Banished: Dreaming of Genie .
As a longtime resident of the Pacific Northwest, Portland, Oregon, to be more precise, I enjoy writing about places I’ve visited, frequently adding my own “pretend” elements into the geography. For example, in Bottle Banished, numerous Portland locations are referenced and the play roles in the characters’ development and the story over all. In addition, I have “made up” other hot spots that help the story along. I’ve created a building that doesn’t really exist, a nightclub for Portland’s elite, a local liquor store that my primary character frequents; along with a dive bar he enjoys visiting—often.
Despite these locations, more places in my story are “real” than not. It’s so much fun to incorporate local legend and lore into the actual story, adding unique twists and turns. The Shanghai Tunnels, known as one of Oregon’s most haunted and historic sites, is prominently featured and used as a primary backdrop for the story. The tunnels, or as they’re often referred to, the Portland Underground, have a story as intriguing as any fictional tale.
According to legend and historic accounts, these subterranean tunnels and warehouses, below the city streets, were used for hiding liquor during prohibition and are rumored to have housed brothels, opium dens, and are most notorious for their part in the practice of “shanghaiing.”
Back in the day, Portland was a thriving seaport, with ships from around the globe docking and conducting business in the City of Roses. Supposedly, many of the “above the ground” establishments, saloons, and businesses, had trapdoors that customers where dropped through after being drugged. These poor souls awakened at sea and were forced to man the ships as they made their way to faraway, foreign ports…some never returning.
Spooky? Absolutely. Intriguing? Without doubt.

My characters find themselves in the tunnels and the results are less than positive, but what makes this whole adventure so cool is the fact you can actually visit and tour the tunnels. Curious? Well, come to Portland and take a peek.

Here is a link to the historic Shanghai Tunnels that also offers tour information. You can see where Genie and Reid face their greatest challenges for yourself.  http://www.shanghaitunnels.info/
I am confident you will enjoy the world I’ve created in Bottle Banished: Dreaming of Genie; just know, what you’re reading has many fictional elements and locations combined with some really intriguing factual landmarks.
Happy Reading!

Book Description:
Genie thought learning how to “do” The Hustle was the worst thing about 1977, right along with strobe lights and disco balls, but she discovers something far worse the day she is bottle banished by an unsanctioned hunter obsessed with her destruction.
Thirty-seven years later, she is awakened from her spellbound slumber by a homeless alcoholic who wants whiskey not a wish. Overwhelmed with shame and keeping secrets from even himself, Reid Romans is the worst master ever.
He stinks. He’s dirty. He’s rude, but even more maddening; he’s sinfully sexy under all the filth and attitude.
When his green-eyed gaze captures Genie for the first time, she’s hooked, and being hooked on a human is not acceptable or allowed according to the genie rule book.
While Reid’s unsavory past bites hard at his heels, and he’s accused of a murder he didn’t commit, a powerful jinn is stalking Genie, intent on adding her to his harem. She has rejected him too many times to count, but he won’t stop until he claims her—body and soul.
Genie and Reid have way more than one love-sick jinn to deal with. A ruthless FBI agent; a cold-blooded cartel; and a hateful hunter, who wants genie back in her bottle, banished forever; keep them fighting for freedom and against the desire flaring between them.
Dark secrets, forbidden love, and simmering suspense take Genie and Reid on an unforgettable journey where the past and future collide and wishes run out.
Please be advised: Bottle Banished is a multiple POV (Point of View) dark fantasy that portrays graphic drug use, violence, language, and sexual situations some may find offensive, including dubious consent, light BDSM, and a Ménage à Trios. There is a Happily Ever After (HEA) for now, but several doors remain open for future installments.
Readers will uncover numerous references to current and past pop culture sprinkled throughout the story. Watch author’s website for contests connected to these references!

Excerpt Genie POV“No! Please!” Genie pleaded, her panic rising. She’d been so careful, cautious to the point of paranoia. “Don’t do this. I will serve you well. I will grant you a wish, any wish.” She struggled to find her tormentor’s one hidden desire. A desire she alone could fulfill.Until this moment, where others had failed, she had managed to avoid bottle banishment.Genie prided herself on her ability to stay at least one step, preferably more, ahead of the hunters. She’d survived to 1977 without losing her freedom. It seemed after centuries, her luck had at last run out.How could I have been so blind?Trapped inside the dreaded ring of chalk-drawn runes and magical sigils, she was defenseless. Her own magic rendered useless by an ancient spell, cast with assurance, by the smirking hunter gripping her future glass prison in his hand. This hunter, she guessed, was not government sanctioned. His methods appeared less refined, though just as effective. She hated to imagine what he had in store before imprisoning her.“I sense your fear,” he chuckled, sounding crazed. “See this bottle? You, my beauty, are going inside, where you will stay. I hope you have a strong stomach. I’ve heard ocean waves…”“Just do it! You offend me!” Her voice wavered despite the brave words. As a creature of fire, she despised water. To be water bound for eternity was a genie’s worst nightmare. The hunter wanted her to suffer. His jaw tensed and his eyes narrowed. “I’m tempted to tear that ridiculous harem outfit off and ruin you like your kind ruined my family.”Genie gasped, stunned by his revelation. She forgot her precarious position long enough to ponder his words. One of her brethren had clearly harmed this hunter’s family, driving his desire for revenge. Never had she hurt a human or used her powers for evil. Why must I be punished for another’s crime?“Don’t like that idea, do you? Be glad I’m not into whores, even pretty ones.” Extending the bottle, his gaze hardened. With conviction, he chanted the words every genie feared and hoped to never hear, confirming what she suspected. Nothing she could offer would stop him. A sudden explosion knocked her back. She hit hard against the circle’s border, the impact ripping the air from her lungs; still, the hunter’s wards held strong. The resulting flash stole her vision just before another blast created a whirlwind, erasing her human body and turning her to smoke. Sucked into the glass prison, she landed with a thud, her rump hitting the bottle’s floor, firing a spike of pain up her spine. She had morphed into a three inch version of herself. Forcing her eyes open, she was met with a harsh reality. Unlike a certain popular television show, featuring a genie and astronaut, her bottle wasn’t furnished with plush sofas and colorful cushions. It was barren, boring, and lacked any comforts. The sole thing keeping Genie from complete panic was the awareness that once sleep found her, she wouldn’t awaken again unless the bottle was uncorked. That might be a long time coming, if ever. “Ouch!” she cried, hating how squeaky her voice sounded as she bounced from one side to the other, slamming against the glass. Her captor intended to make her final journey an unpleasant one. When at last her purple prison splashed into the water, she was too banged up to worry about his wave-warning. She scanned her surroundings a final time, noticing the gleam of gold lettering etched around the bottle’s exterior. Unable to make sense of the writing, she hung her head, giving into despair. To her relief, the rocking motion soon lulled her closer to sleep rather than causing the promised sea sickness.Closing her eyes for the last time, she accepted her fate.

Blitz for the Print Release of Choosing Evil by Kristina Rienzi

Embrace Your Inner Demon
We all have inner demons, right? I know I do. In fact, a few of mine flew to the top of my mind as I sat here click-clacking away on the keyboard. Being human is tough, all of the emotional baggage and lessons learned. I’d much rather live as one of my paranormal fictional characters. They may have issues, but using supernatural powers can be quite advantageous.
When I wrote Choosing Evil, I gave it the tagline, "Embrace your inner demon” in hopes it would link the story's theme with its prominent paranormal elements. I had it branded on everything from wine glasses to baseball hats. For fun, all the while never considering the buzz it would cause in my small beach town.
On several occasions, my husband has been stopped in public and asked why he's advertising Satanic propaganda. At first, I was mortified about this development. Clearly, it was not the message I was going for when I created Choosing Evil's slogan! I was a half a beat away from tossing my swag in the trash forever. That is until he explained how when he told people it was the tagline for my book, they all wanted to read it!
Viola! I did my job. "Embrace Your Inner Demon" was sure to get people talking. So I left my questionable slogan perfectly intact, and promptly ordered more swag!
The reality of my paranormal story is that each of my characters battles their inner demons, just like us humans. Although, they're also dealing with actual demons in the flesh. While demons walking beside us on the Earth is a far cry from our reality, evil is evident in our world from people who commit heinous acts to the doubts we have as individuals about our worth. Our job is to overcome that evil and find a place where we can live in peace.
So, the question Choosing Evil raises, not only for its characters but its readers alike, is, "What does evil mean to you?" My hope for you when you read Choosing Evil is to question evil, as well as to embrace your inner demons. Because in the end, we should love ourselves, flaws and all. No one is perfect. We are all works in progress, just like my paranormal characters.

Excerpt:
Already late, Serafina began sprinting toward her building. She was still deep in thought and failed to pay attention. A second later, she slammed into what felt like a brick wall. Her coffee cup filled with mocha latte went flying, landing all over an impeccable pinstriped suit.           She stopped breathing when she faced the victim of her morning beverage. A handsome bronzed man, almost two feet taller than Serafina, stood in front of her. His irises were so light they looked almost clear. They held a world of intrigue and reeled her right in. Those iridescent opal eyes were magnificent and haunting, telling her almost everything she needed to know about him. He was a demon.           His smile was perfection, revealing a set of incredibly beautiful teeth. He was stunning and he wasn't human. Serafina wiped her moist palms on her dress and gave him a half-smile. "I'm so sorry." She rummaged through her purse for napkins or tissues, not fully understanding why the universe had chosen this moment, a time when her best self wasn’t present, to meet a gorgeous demon, like him.           "No problem, I’m Damon.” His smoky voice made her shudder with pleasure.            "Serafina,” she lowered her voice but it didn’t sound natural and it wasn’t nearly as sultry as she wished it had been. She stepped forward to shake Damon’s hand and her heel caught on the pavement. As she began to tip over, he grabbed her arm and pulled her up straight, all in one swift motion. Now attached to him, her arms wrapped around his waist in desperation. When she realized what she was doing, she shuffled away from him and tried regain her balance.           "Are you okay?" His expression showed his concern.            "I'm fine. But, I didn’t have my coffee yet."  Serafina tried to flatten the wrinkles in her dress and right herself.           Damon laughed, catching her off guard. Relieved, Serafina laughed too. She didn’t expect her attempt at humor to work. Given her morning, she didn't think there was any wittiness in her to begin with, let alone, for it to come with such ease.           When Serafina’s laid eyes on the mess she had made, her posture went rigid. It was a coffee crime scene, straight out of a forensic textbook. Luminal would have exposed her caffeine attack for all to see. For her assault, she should have been handcuffed on the spot. "I've ruined your clothes.”Damon brushed himself off and buttoned up his suit jacket. "I’m fine.”
"Yes, you are." Serafina meant to say it in her head, or at the least under her breath, but it had come out of her mouth loud and clear. Her face became hot in an instant, so she began fanning herself.             "This might sound like a line, but I’m glad you bumped into me. Where are you from?” Damon’s eyes twinkled, but his question sounded forced as if he already knew her answer.             "Home, today that is.” She failed horribly at making another joke. “But I've lived at the Jersey Shore all of my life." She tried to redeem herself "And, yes, it did sound like a line.” He was definitely the new one in town. "Did you move here recently?"          Damon shook his head. "I'm as new as you. I've lived in Rivershore for many years. I work in Maroon County and for just as long."          Rivershore was an upscale town not far from where she grew up in the modest beach town of Silver Lake. Although she had worked in the city for several years, Serafina spent all of her free time at the Jersey Shore, mainly Maroon County. Even more coincidentally, Serafina would turn thirty years old soon, so Damon was technically the same age as her. Demons never aged past the age of thirty.           From what he said, they had shared the commonality of living and working in nearby towns. So, it didn’t make sense she had never seen him before. Clearly, he had a knack for hiding. However, many years in demon terms could have been any amount of time since demons were practically immortal.           She studied him for more reasons than one, although he was striking and easy to admire. Damon’s exquisite appearance reminded her of a model or an actor. He had a rugged look, yet he was polished. He wore his expensive suit coupled with his five o'clock shadow as if it were a fashion statement. His ebony hair was long enough to push behind his ears. He was a unique mix of a tattoo artist and a Hollywood movie star. The combination really worked for him.           Serafina’s eye contact with him was firm but her muscles lost all of their tension. “Where exactly do you work? I can’t believe I’ve never seen you before.” She felt weak as she visually devoured Damon. She was certain she would have remembered him if she had seen him before. The fact their paths had never crossed was inexplicable to her. Then, so was the supernatural. Humans living with a paranormal reality made anything possible.           Right as Damon was about to answer, his watch alarm went off. He silenced it. "I've got to run, but it was nice meeting you, Serafina. I hope to bump into you again, and soon.”  He touched her arm lightly in a goodbye gesture and once more flashed his award-winning smile.             By the time Serafina summoned the nerve to reply, "Me too," he was already gone.

And…” Excitement crept into her voice, “He sensed your grandmother’s presence when we went into the Caldwell School. He might even think you are your grandmother!”Harmony looked out the window. They were almost to the school. “I don’t think he can tell the difference. Which means, he thinks you’re Annie Mae Brown. And that scares him!”Something came over Annie—a force so powerful that she couldn’t resist called her from the Caldwell School. She cranked the wheel, whipping the car into the school lot, then slammed on the brakes, skidding to a stop in front of the old school. She jumped out of the car and ran toward the building.“Annie, what are you doing?” Harmony yelled.Annie stopped. She didn’t know why she was doing it, but she knew she had to. “I am Annie Mae Brown!” she screamed.“And I’m going to make sure the whole world knows your secret!”The ground trembled. And with a deafening boom, the school windows shattered. Shards of glass flew toward her.Behind her, Harmony screamed. And suddenly Drew was there, knocking her to the ground, shielding her with his body as glass pelted the ground around her.The storm of glass stopped and Annie looked up into Drew’s eyes. “Are you okay?” he asked, getting to his feet.Annie pushed herself up into a sitting position. “I think so.”“Stay here,” Drew said, then dashed into the old school building.“Annie…” Harmony’s voice was weak.Annie scrambled to her feet. Harmony was standing in front of the car, a piece of glass sticking out of her chest. Annie ran.Her feet moved, but Harmony seemed to be getting farther away. And then she watched in horror as Harmony looked down at the glass.“Don’t!” Annie screamed—too late. Harmony reached up.Her fingers wrapped around the glass and she pulled. She looked down at the glass in her hand as if wondering where it had come from. A dark red blotch spread across her bright green hoodie. The evil-looking shard slipped from her hand and shattered on the pavement. Harmony dropped to her knees. Her eyes met Annie’s for a brief second before she toppled forward.Annie reached her friend in time to catch her and lower her to the ground. “Somebody, help me,” she screamed. In the distance she heard voices. “Help!” she yelled again. Her fingers felt thick as she worked the zipper down and pulled Harmony’s sweatshirt open. Blood flowed from a deep gash just below Harmony’s left shoulder. Annie yanked her own sweatshirt off and pressed it against the wound. Harmony’s face was white. Her eyes were closed. “Talk to me,” Annie cried.Harmony’s eyelids fluttered open. “You okay?” Her voice was barely a whisper.Annie nodded. Tears streamed down her face.“I saw…” Harmony’s voice faded and her eyes closed.“Open your eyes!” Annie sobbed. “Please open your eyes.”Harmony didn’t move. The blood soaked through Annie’s sweatshirt.“Please don’t die,” Annie whispered. She pressed harder on the wound. She could feel the ghost behind her. She looked back at the old school building, expecting to see the swirling dark shadow. Empty windows stared back at her.She needed to get help, but she couldn’t let up on the pressure. Harmony would die!Where was Drew? Why wasn’t he helping her?“Drew! Anybody! Help! Please help,” she screamed.A door slammed across the street. Footsteps pounded on the pavement, growing closer. She looked back at Harmony.“Someone’s coming. Hang on.”The bleeding seemed to have slowed and Annie leaned closer to her friend. “See, it’s slowing down. You’re going to be okay.” And then an awful thought crept into her mind. The worst thought ever. What if the bleeding had slowed because Harmony’s heart had stopped beating? What if Harmony was-she couldn’t think the word.

Guest blog and Giveaway: The Embers of Light by Tammy Farrell

Villains Have Feelings Too
When I wrote my first published novel The Darkness of Light my main focus was to tell my heroine, Mara’s, story. But as the story took shape and my villain, Malcolm, was born, he ended up taking on a life of his own. He was supposed to be vile, he was supposed to be irredeemable, but as his character unfolded I found that Malcolm was a person, Malcolm had feelings, and Malcolm had reasons (albeit misguided ones) for his actions.
Some of the more sympathetic fictional villains that come to mind are:Lestat (Interview with the Vampire) – He later becomes the protagonist and arguably the most loved Anne Rice character.
Loki (Thor, Marvel)– You can’t help but feel bad for the guy. He’s a foundling and is always out of place.
Jamie Lannister (Game of Thrones) – Sometimes a bad guy gets what he deserves and changes his tune.
Black Jack Randall (Outlander) – The alternative Frank Randall. We can’t help but see Frank in his horribly vicious ancestor, and when we learn Jack’s secret, you can’t help but wonder if that’s why he’s so angry.
Death (The Arcana Chronicles) – Death is a great example of a villain evolving. He starts out as the main antagonist with seemingly no human qualities whatsoever, but as the series continues we learn that there’s a lot more to Death than we first thought.
William Hamleigh (Pillars of the Earth) – A perfectly selfish brat, but he does have his human moments that make you see him as less than a monster.
Heathcliff (Wuthering Heights) – It’s impossible not to love Heathcliff, and while his descent into darkness makes him a true antagonist, we forgive him because we can sympathize with his struggles.
Dracula – A monster, a blood drinker—a creature unlike the sexy vampires we’ve come to know and love. Dracula is a villain to rival them all, BUT he wasn’t always so, and the more we know of the man that became the creature, and the humanity that still resides in his immortal heart, we love him.
These characters are all antagonists. These characters have all done terrible things. But these characters also evoke a sense of compassion in the reader at some point, and that’s what makes them such great villains.
When I realized my character, Malcolm, wasn’t simply a cold-hearted antagonist, I started to explore his motivations. In Darkness we see his jealously, his arrogance, and his entitlement, but we also learn about his feelings of abandonment, insecurity, and his deep need for acceptance. Quite often Malcolm tries to do the right thing. He knows the difference between right and wrong. But the moment he feels slighted he takes the low road in order to get what he wants.
The Embers of Light is an exploration of what happens to a villain when he becomes the victim. In The Darkness of Light, Malcolm was punished for his actions, and in Embers he faces even more adversity as he confronts his inner demons. He’s still Malcolm the villain, and revenge is his motivation, but as he navigates the world without his Light (the power that was taken from him), he’s forced to make some choices that will change him forever.

It’s important for villains to have relatable emotions rather than being these inherently evil entities readers can’t relate to at all. Villains can struggle with their antagonist ways, they can show kindness or mercy, and they can even come to regret their actions. This is what makes a villain human, and based on the list of villains above, this is what makes a villain to remember.

Book One, The Darkness of Light, On Sale for .99 Excerpt:
By the time the smell of smoke and roasting meat finally reached Malcolm, and his hole in the ground was completely black, he knew the time was drawing near. The sound of laughter and flutes from above stoked the fires of determination within him, while the repetitive drumbeat counted down the minutes. His mind wandered as he stared sullenly at the walls of black earth. He clutched his mangled hand to his chest, far too weary for anger. He was humiliated. Over and over again he’d been disgraced, robbed, laughed at. The hardest truth to face was that there still might be more degradation to come. He had wanted everything and succeeded at nothing. Hope was now but a whisper in the past, still carried on the winds, but too distant to hear.
Malcolm pressed his head against the soft earth. He had nothing left to lose and nothing left to love. Even his own mother had become an unseen shadow, abandoning him in his time of need. She was useless to him, as she always had been, and he vowed that if she ever showed herself to him again, he would speak any word that might pierce a mother’s soul.

Book Description:
Ruby dreams of Hollywood. A chance encounter with The Harmoneers, an all-female jazz group, offers the opportunity of a lifetime. Follow the gang as they scheme and double-cross.
And love?
Well, it don’t mean a thing.
Excerpt:
Sycamore Grove, California1931
“I’m not marrying you, Audie McCardle. I most certainly am not.” Ruby Banks crossed her arms, pressed her lips tight, and gave a definitive shake of her head. She leaned toward the mirror over her hand-me-down vanity and stabbed a pin into her blonde curls. She twisted her head left and right, and fluffed the back of her hair. A strange tint of pink ran loose through the strands and waves. Maybe she should have been more careful with the mixture of peroxide and ammonia she’d used the previous night. But between her mother running up the stairs and hugging her close, her father taking his pipe from his mouth long enough to yell that the hair potion was causing him an onset of lung disorder, and her little sister, Charlotte, jumping around and squawking nonsense about weddings weddings weddings, Ruby botched the dye job.Never mind, she thought. If anyone asked, she’d say it was exactly the color she was hoping for.Or she wouldn’t say anything at all. Jean Harlow wouldn’t say anything. Of that Ruby Banks was sure. She snatched her apron from the end of her bed, bounded down the narrow stairs, and ignored her mother calling from the kitchen. Ruby pushed open the front gate and darted down the sidewalk. She was late (as usual) for her morning shift at the diner, and she still had to pick up the pies from Mrs. Jensen on the next block. The early morning sun promised another day of horrible Central California heat. The sky would soon brown with the upturned soils of the fields, and the air already stank from the cows.A beat-up Model T stake-bed truck rolled past Ruby. She heard the tires slow on the hard-packed soil of the street. Gears ground, and the truck reversed and pulled next to her.John Mayer shifted his stub of a cigar to the other side of his mouth, tilted back his fedora, and smiled. His skin was bronze and wrinkled. He rubbed a weathered thumb across his chin. “Guess congratulations are in order.”“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Ruby lifted her head and continued walking. John Mayer kept the truck rolling slowly in reverse.“Fine boy, Audie is.”“So everyone says.”“You make a sweet couple.”“We’re not a couple.”He scratched the shirt on his chest. “You don’t say.”“He can buy any house he pleases in the Sears Roebuck catalog, but that doesn’t mean we’re a couple. And it certainly doesn’t mean I’m going to marry him.”“You don’t say.”“I do say. I have plans of my own.” She blew back a curl that had come loose. “Don’t you have some hogs to tie or something like that?”“I don’t have hogs.”“You know what I’m saying.”He chewed his cigar then shifted the gears. The truck took a jump and shimmied. “You got a mean streak, Ruby. Yes, miss, you do.” With that, he was off down the road in a swirl of dirt.Ruby wiped her mouth with her handkerchief. She patted her hair and strode up the wood steps to Mrs. Jensen’s porch. She knocked three times on the screen door frame and stepped back. Mrs. Jensen shuffled to the door, balancing five boxes of peach pies.Only the top of half of her face was visible above the stack. She passed the boxes to Ruby and wiped her hands on a flour-coated apron. “I hear congratulations are in order.”“Aw, nuts.”Ruby’s heels cracked against the pavement. She passed the Esso station and VFW Hall and drew near the two blocks that made up Sycamore Grove’s downtown. The neon spire of the Odeon dwarfed the squat brick of its neighbors. She glared up, worried that this upcoming non-wedding would be splattered in black and white across the marquee. Luckily not. It remained safely Gable and Harlow in Red Dust.Maud Riley stood under the awning of Rexall Drugs, waiting, as she always did, for Ruby. Her gray felt cloche sat low on her head, the nutmeg tufts of her bob feathered under the soft rim. She shifted from foot to foot, tapping her fingers against her black-and mustard-checked skirt. As Ruby neared, Maud narrowed her eyes and blinked fast before shaking her head. She pursed her lips and twisted them into a strained smile.“What’s wrong with you?” Ruby asked.Maud’s eyebrows met in a frown. “Nothing. Not a thing.” She waved her hand for no reason that Ruby could ascertain and fell in step beside her. “I guess I have to wish —”“Don’t you start.” She shifted the pies to her hip. “I can tolerate all the little gifts he gives me. I mean, a girl does need emery boards and cologne. But buying a house? That’s called unbounded impudence.”“I think it was just a down payment.”“It’s still a lot of cheek. What does he think? I’m going to roll over like a, like a starving dog and do whatever he commands?” Ruby stopped in front of the diner, set the boxes on the cement and faced Maud. “He hasn’t even asked me to marry him. And you know what? When he does, I’m going to laugh like this — HA-ha. Because I’ve got all that money Aunt Caroline left me, and come September, I’m going to take the bus to Merced and then the train to Hollywood. And in neither of those vehicles can you fit a Sears and Roebuck house and an ego the size of Audie McCardle’s. And when he comes in for breakfast, I’m going to tell him so.”Maud crossed her arms over her thin frame and swayed back and forth. “You got something to say, just say it.”Maud bit her lip and shrugged.“What does that mean?”“It means nothing.” Maud swung her gaze around the street and up at the Odeon spire and then stared over her shoulder at the empty diner. “You like my skirt?”“What?”“I wore it just for you. So you could see how the pattern came out. And such.” She gave that funny wave again, as if she were swatting a big bug. “Never mind. I’ve got an early piano lesson to give.”“Well, don’t let me keep you.” Ruby bent to pick up the pies. “Would you mind opening the door for me? I mean, if you have time.”“I always have time for you.”“Are you all right?”“Of course I’m all right. Why?”“You’re red as a beet.”Maud put the flats of her palms against her cheeks, turned on her heel, and rushed away, the bell of her skirt flapping against her knees.“But the door, Maud … ”

Spotlight and Giveaway: Sing For Me Angels by Gracie Madison

Sing For MeAngels and AriasBook 1Gracie Madison

Number of pages: 325-350Word Count: 84,000 Words
Cover Artist: Rebecca Berto
Book Description:
Madeline Noel fled war-torn Heaven to hide within the mortal world, but the blessing that could protect her from evil is the holy realm’s forbidden power.
As a talented soprano for the Eden Theatre Company, Madeline hides among prima donnas and tone-deaf flutists. Her perfect voice may entertain audiences, but a careless laugh may shatter glass, and her greatest scream can kill. To control her unrestrained voice, the angels forbid Madeline from embracing the emotions that strengthen her song. Anger. Fear.
Love.
The demon-hunter Damascus vows to defend Madeline from Hell’s relentless evil, but he cannot protect her from her own feelings. Though they deny their dangerous attraction, her guardian becomes her greatest temptation.
Surrendering to desire may awaken the gift suppressed within Madeline’s soul, and neither Heaven nor Hell will allow such absolute power to exist.

Excerpt #2
Singing while Veiled was a travesty. Her words might have mumbled, her vocal cords strained, and the warmth of her pitch muffled without the range and complexities she studied in the Realm. She searched the bar and found him.Damascus always listened—within the Realm or within a tiny bar with a tinny karaoke machine sputtering a melody. And, for him, she’d sing forever. The song blended between their voices, though Madeline’s warm harmony unintentionally overpowered Danielle’s tired lead. Usually, she wove caution within her notes. Prevented the beauty from striking each beat and bursting within the measures.Usually.Her gaze strayed to the table. To him.The blessing of chastity corrupted with a glance to the one listening so intently. The Realm created the Choirs to entertain all, and yet, Madeline meticulously sang each note for one being only. All her songs echoed only for him.His attention forged a fire that sliced her body and razed every bit of her defenses in consecrated, dangerous heat. No alcohol was that intoxicating or that sensual. She hummed over the notes, layering each word in sultry meter. An unintentional seduction molded from the very thoughts she fought to hide. The emotion trapped within her voice. Swelled. The feminine growl in her melody suppressed with her weakening resolve. He’d hear her longing, and she wanted him to understand it.The bar shifted and sighed. Hands brushed arms. Whispers passed in the shadows. Giggles yielded to hushed promises. Her song led them all. The power of her voice broke the inhibitions of even the sober cast and crew members. In the corner, a couple kissed despite the wedding rings on their fingers. A chorus girl hopped onto the bar while another woman embraced her.A cool shudder teased her flesh with the prickle of forbidden goose bumps. Her voice wavered, but not from weakness. The secret delight caressed the music from her lips and presented the song to him like a soft kiss. The shadows of the room concealed what she could not. The heat touched her brow, and she flushed a damning pink.It was time to stop. Before everyone in the pub abandoned modesty and gave into the one passion she created in them but never experienced for herself. The music resonated within her, but she couldn’t steal her gaze from Damascus. Every moment only teased her with the promise of his song, the cadence of his breath, and the drumming of his need. The song crescendoed. Her body ached to feel the same. But the music crackled and sizzled into silence. Madeline’s music lost in a shuddering gasp. The song affected more than the mortals edging close to one and other, holding hands. Leaning into the shadows. Whispering. Touching.Damascus’s steps thudded the very earth beneath his feet.  The heat flared from his body. Or maybe her own. Music had never dizzied her so much. He moved, drawn by the promise of the melody. A thrill cascaded through her, sobering and affirming all at once. The warrior submitted to the maiden.
