Review Punch Bowls and Pitcher Drinks: Recipes for Delicious Big-Batch Cocktails by Clarkson Potter

Punch Bowls and Pitcher Drinks: Recipes for Delicious Big-Batch Cocktails Punch Bowls and Pitcher Drinks: Recipes for Delicious Big-Batch Cocktails by Clarkson Potter

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Excellent recipes and ideas for fun party drinks.

My absolute favorite- Vampire Brew! This non-alcholic fun punch is perfect for Halloween or any party that has a spoooky vibe. I hope to make it for my daughter's upcoming Sweet 16 which has a Nightmare before Christmas Theme. I think the punch would be a good fit.

I also love the Peppermint Stick Ice Cream Punch and the Mixed Berry Lemonade- perfect punches with no alcohol. The kids will adore them.

Now for the punches with punch- the alchohol ones, my favorite include the Aztec Chocolate (of course you can ditch the tequila for a winter treat the entire family will enjoy), the Boozy Eggnog, Irish Coffee, and Hubby's fave Tropicoloda Punch.

This book is going on my recipe shelf for keeps.

A Review of Fair Game by Patricia Briggs

Fair Game (Alpha & Omega, #3) Fair Game by Patricia Briggs

Alpha and Omega, Book 3

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I came late to the game for the Mercy Thompson series, but that's OK because I love immersing myself in a series and being able to read the books back to back. Which I did, from Moon Called to Night Broken, I got to read them back to back.

Then I read the anthology Shifting Shadows which is a collection of shorts from the Mercy Thompson world, and I found Alpha and Omega the story of Charles and Anna's meeting. Instantly I knew I had to read the Alpha and Omega series as well.

I love this series. Absolutely love it.

If you've read the Mercy books you'll find many familiar characters in these- Bran, Charles, Samuel, Asil...and you'll get a much more in depth look at these characters because not only do we learn more about them the stories also feature some of their POV's where in the Mercy books we only get hers.

It coincides with the Mercy Thompson series and we get to see a lot of things that are on the sidelines in Mercy's series. The Mercy series we only get to know what she knows and she's left in the dark about many things because she's not on the frontline with Bran who has ties to everything.

We learn more about the wolves coming out and why the Fae went against the grain and rebelled against humans, which is a big mystery in the Mercy books.

You really need to read both series to get "the whole picture" of this world.

In Fair Game Charles and Anna are tracking a serial killer. Charles is battling his own ghosts and his conscience about being a soldier, a killer, the hand of justice for the wolves. The ghosts of all those he's killed haunt him and leave him distracted, which puts a target on his mate's back. The serial killer decides Anna will make a perfect victim.

Fast paced and excellently written, Briggs pulls you into her world and makes you never want to leave. Action, adventure, mystery, love and romance. Briggs seamlessly weaves all these elements together creating the perfect books for urban fantasy and paranormal romance lovers.

I can't wait to dive into the book in this series, Dead Heat.

Interview and Giveaway with J.D. Brown

What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
I know this is going to sound cliché, given today’s pop-culture, but it’s honestly the romance. I grew up with the 90s gothic vampires – Dracula and Anne Rice – and have always found myself drawn to the dark angst and tragedy side of the story. While others saw gore and horror, I saw Dracula’s deep yearning for his lost wife. Vampires give us a metaphor for the darker, uglier, sinister sides of real life – and in that I find beauty. I wanted to bring that deep angst and dark drama to my books, but I wanted the roles to be reversed. I wanted a strong female lead, and then I wanted to push her past her limits, until she breaks. Of course, as my heroine, Ema, put it: “I’m not broken until I’m dead.” Ema’s no Bella Swan. She pushes me back, growing in ways that makes me proud to be her creator. 
Please tell us about your latest release.
Dark Becoming is the third book in the Ema Marx series. The series follows Ema, a post collage graduate who is attacked and transformed into a vampire. The problem is that her transformation isn’t what it seems. Something very unconventional has taken place for Ema to go from human to vampire, and it’s left the paranormal world quite stumped. Could it be she’s the girl prophesized to save all of vampire-kind from an ancient evil? In Dark Becoming, Ema faces this ultimate evil she’s been preparing for, but the prophecy might not be at all what it seems. They might have the wrong girl.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
I definitely do my best to name my characters something from their region and time period of birth, also taking into consideration the culture their parents hail from, as it is their parents that would have named them, not really *me*. Since most if my characters are very ancient, that means I often end up with very uncommon names. I like uncommon names. The only problem, though, is that they can be hard to pronounce. So here’s a hint for all my readers – the “J” in Jalmari’s and Jesu’s names is pronounced like a “Y”. Brinnon is pronounced with a short “I” in both syllables, as in “brittle” and “linen”. In Valafar, the second “a” is pronounced like a short “e”. Don’t feel bad if you can’t pronounce them. I had to look them up myself. LOL.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
Yes, definitely. Bridget has been a pain in the butt to write since book two, and not just because she drives a wedge between Ema and Jesu (the heroine and hero). She’s so stand-off-ish, it’s hard to get into her head and know what she’s thinking. Sometimes I wish I could physically slap her. Haha. Valafar was a challenge too, but for completely different reasons. My female fans love his sense of humor, and I do too, but in order to get his character right, I had to think like a dude. Worse, I had to think like a dude pretending he didn’t give a rat’s ass about anyone. As a female writer, that was kind of a challenge in its own. LOL.
Did you find anything really interesting while researching this or another book?
I dug a little a deeper into the field of alchemy for Dark Becoming, and that in its own was pretty fascinating. I’ve gotten grief in the past for including a “Harry Potter” element in my series – as if J.K. Rowling made everything up out of thin air. Please. Alchemy was actually a very real part of our past, and continues to be a real science in some parts of the world. I think it’s very feasible that my vampires would have run into it at some point and used it for their own gain.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
Some of my fans have said the books could stand on their own, and I did make it a point to briefly re-hash any old details from the first two books in the series, but I really think they would be better enjoyed in the order they were published, including the prequel novella. Here’s the correct reading order in case anyone wants it:- Dark Heirloom (book 1)- Dark Liaison (book 2)- Athena’s Oracle (book 0.5)- Dark Becoming (book 3)
What are your guilty pleasures in life?
Coffee, YA books, and shoes that are so ridiculous I would never wear them in public, but I end up buying them anyway.
Other than writing, what are some of your interests, hobbies or passions in life?
I love working with animals. I used to be a dog trainer and groomer and sometimes still clip nails for friends who are too afraid of being bitten or cutting the nail too short. It’s a handy skill to have, LOL. I’m also a Netflix junkie. Seriously, it’s a problem. I also love museums. I’m the weirdo who can spend 12 hours in a museum, reading through every single factoid and description. I have a hard time enjoying museums with kids because they want to run through it all too fast for my liking. Haha.
What can readers expect next from you?
Expect at least two more books in the Ema Marx series to drop sometime in 2016 and 2017. I also have a YA series in the works, and several more ideas in the backburner, all of which are likely to feature epic heroines with a witty sarcastic flare, lots of dark drama, and romance that doesn’t overtake the story.

DARK BECOMING An Ema Marx Novel 3
Ema Marx is in a race against time. Or rather, a race against Apollyon. A powerful weapon—the legendary philosopher’s stone—could tip the scale in favor of whoever gets their fangs on it first. For Ema, obtaining the stone is an uphill battle through love, alliance, heartbreak, and loyalty. Winning should mean the beginning of beautiful things, but the closer Ema gets to her destiny, the more uncertain her future becomes. Could it be this war was never meant for her? And why the heck doesn’t morning sickness adhere to rules of its own name?

DARK LIAISON An Ema Marx Novel 2
Ema Marx wishes her life would go back to normal, but there’s nothing normal about being a Romani-Vampyre with an ancestor who wants you dead. Apollyon is back, wreaking havoc on the lives of everyone she cares about while plotting her demise. Ema thought she would find a new best friend in her trainer, Bridget, until the exotic vampire vies for Jesu’s attention. Jesu can date who he wants, right? Ema has more important things to worry about, like honing her powers. When Apollyon’s thugs appear out of the shadows to attack her, Ema knows it’s time to take action. But everyone else has other plans in mind. One thing is for certain, being under house arrest in the German vampyre king’s castle was not part of her plan to save the day.

DARK HEIRLOOM An Ema Marx Novel 1
“You’re a vampire” is sonot what Ema Marx wants to hear when she wakes from a two-day coma in a cryptic yet exquisite castle in northern Finland. Unfortunately, it explains a lot. Like why she’s able to see in the dark and walk through solid objects. What she doesn’t understand is why the other vampires expect her to have all the answers. It’s their fault she turned into one of them…right? Jalmari’s hatred for his old-man intensifies when he’s ordered to bring that troublesome girl to their castle. He has a clan to run, there’s no time for babysitting newborn vampires no matter how they were converted to their culture. But when a two-thousand-year-old premonition threatens to take the crown and his life, Jalmari sees no other choice than to take out the catalyst. Ema Marx. Fortunately for Ema, she could also be the clan’s only savior. The race to figure out her vampiric origins is on. And maybe she’ll get the hang of the blood-drinking gig along the way.

ATHENA’S ORACLE An Heirloom Vampyres Novella 0.5
Leena’s ‘gift of sight’ secures her place as the next great oracle of Athena. Instead of being groomed for wifehood like other girls, Leena spends her days within the walls of the Acropolis, shuffled around by the clergy and doomed to be a virgin forever. Before her ascension, Leena decides to take matters into her own hands. With the help of her father’s book of alchemy, she casts an incantation calling forth her own personal hero. But when that hero turns out to be a rogue vampyre prince with a haunted past, Leena begins to question if her feelings for him are the work of divine intervention, or a love spell gone horribly wrong. Athena’s Oracle is a prequel to the novels Dark Heirloom and Dark Liaison , also by J.D. Brown. Set in 4th century B.C.E., Athena’s Oracle chronicles the romance between Leena and Jalmari during the very early trials of their immortal lives.

Chapter One
The bullet missed my eye by two inches. It flew past my temple, grazed a few strands of hair, and struck Jesu’s Adam’s apple.
Time slowed. I turned to face him and my heart stopped at the sight of blood trickling down his neck. His arms fell away from my waist and he staggered back one, two steps. He lifted a hand to the wound, his emerald gaze widened in shock. He took a third step back—and toppled over the edge of the loft. My breath hitched as I flung my hands into the air to grab him, but I was too late.
Jesu hit the dirt floor of the barn with a heavy thump and I screamed. I dove onto my stomach and scrambled to the ledge. Digging my fingernails into the wooden floorboards, I glanced at the scene below, heart pounding.
Jesu landed on his back, his arms and legs splayed, his long hair tossed across his face. His eyes were open underneath, but they didn’t move—didn’t blink. He lay so still—too still. My blood ran cold. Terror erupted from my lungs.
“Jesu!”
My cry drew a chorus of pops and snaps. Frantic, I glanced around the empty space, not understanding the strange sounds until, from the shadowy corners of the moldy barn, emerged a group of nude Alpan vampires. Several more dropped from the ceiling, shifting from arachnid to humanoid form in mid-air.
King Nikolas’ soldiers. They responded to my shouts of distress, inching closer to Jesu with looks of concern.
I need to get to Jesu. My hands trembled as I pushed to my knees and crawled toward the ladder. My nerves shook too much to phase or fly. Where did that shot come from?
My fingers almost reached the first rung when a hand gripped my shoulder and yanked me through the air. I landed on my spine, hitting the rickety loft floor. A cloud of dust rose from the impact, blurring my vision. The silhouette of a man appeared through the haze. He straddled my stomach and used his weight to pin me in place. Pale ring-clad fingers gripped my neck and squeezed. Two blades sliced the skin under his choking grip and a searing pain cut through my flesh. A wet stickiness oozed over my neck and soaked the collar of my shirt. Gasping under the pain, I jabbed my fingers between his and tried with all my might to pry off his hands. Feeling the odd shape of his rings, each one fused to the next, I realized he wore some sort of brass knuckles weapon with a knife fixed to the underside. The man wasn’t just trying to choke me to death…he meant to sever my head. The dust settled and my gaze flew over his black leather attire. His chin-length mass of thick black hair fell over his face, obscuring his identity, but that didn’t matter. I’d recognize him anywhere. His methods were entirely too familiar.
“Jalmari,” I grunted. “You bastard.”
A breeze blew in from the missing portion of the upper barn wall and lifted his hair, confirming what I already knew. His dark green irises shone in the moonlight and he grinned, flashing each one of his razor sharp fangs.
Every ounce of fear from a moment ago transformed into red-hot fury. I lifted my knees and pushed my feet against the floor, rolling us both onto our sides. I willed myself to de-solidify, but his grip kept me firmly in the third dimension. He levitated, still holding me by the neck. The blades cut deep, lodging under my flesh as my toes left the floor and my weight became a disadvantage. Not having any other choice, I used my ability to levitate with him, countering gravity to lessen the death grip around my windpipe. Together, we rose through the collapsed side of the roof, out into the night. I glanced down just in time to see the Alpan soldiers clambering up the ladder. They were very small and blurry in the periphery of my vision.
Jalmari snickered. “They cannot help you, rat.”
I rolled my eyes at the derogatory taunt, but didn’t respond. For one thing, his weapon still carved into my throat and I worried speech would accelerate further damage. Secondly, he was wrong. The Alpans could shape-shift, which meant they could turn into birds and peck Jalmari’s stupid eyes out. I wasn’t going to wait for their help, though. I could be headless by then. My throat swelled as the blades neared my trachea. The edges of my vision darkened to a hazy gray and my lungs burned in protest. I was going to pass out from lack of oxygen before he killed me.
No, this isn’t how it ends.

About the Author:
J.D. Brown knows that vampires exist because she’s dating one and no, he doesn’t sparkle. Unfortunately, he’s not immortal either (or maybe her standards are too low). A magnet for subcultures and weirdness, J.D. was that socially awkward girl with more fictional friends than real ones. As a child battling a hearing loss and Muckle-Wells Syndrome, J.D. found comfort in books where strong women always saved the day and got the guy. An obsession with Charmed, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Buffy the Vampire Slayer led J.D. to believe that her mutated chromosome made her something more, not something less. Thus her stubborn flare to persevere was born. A lover of fine cuisine, coffee, and shoes, J.D. never understood why shoe stores don’t serve Starbucks and soufflé. EXCERPT TWO Laying in the hospital bed, his head pounded, but he still didn’t want to pass up a chance to be alone with Crystal and kiss her. Yes, perhaps that would help him. He even imagined her in a nurse’s uniform and straddling him. “Hey man, could you swipe a bag of cookies and mints from the cafeteria?”“Sure.” Paul winked and he hoped it meant he caught his hint. After the door closed behind Paul, Kade hit the button on his bed so he could sit up more. When Crystal moved to sit in the chair, he patted the mattress beside him. She looked uncomfortable. Had he misread her? He thought she was attracted to him.Placing her purse on the empty chair, she sat down on the bed beside him and he couldn’t keep the grin off his face.“Some party, huh?”She shrugged. “Sorry you got mixed up with that—that burglar wasn’t it?”“Probably. They usually don’t carry tear gas, though.”“Oh?” Shit! When would he learn to keep his damn mouth shut. “I mean, that’s what the doctors think it was.”She trailed a hand up his blankets to his chest and his breathing increased. “So what do thieves usually carry?”“Guns or knives, I guess.” It was hard to think with her looking up from her golden lashes like that. “Then I guess you were lucky she didn’t have either of those.”He rubbed a hand across the back of his neck. “Yeah, well… ” Her hand running down his arm was distracting. “But I’d rather not talk about that.” He reached out and hooked his fingers in her hair. “Paul could return at any moment and I’ve wanted to feel your lips for weeks.” Not waiting for a response, he brushed his mouth across hers. Light. Gentle. Asking. When she sighed against his mouth, he pulled her to him until she fell across his torso. Her lips tasted of cherries and vanilla. God, she felt good in his arms. His tongue swept across her bottom lip, seeking an invitation. When she gave it, he growled and deepened the kiss. Their lips and tongues grew more insistent. He wanted to feel her skin beneath his hands. To kiss every inch and memorize her body. His hand cradled her to him and he swept a hand up to her breast. Lace. Nice. She was full in his hands and he fought the urge to strip their clothes off and—The door to his room creaked open and Crystal jumped off him as if he were a hot stove. Good thing he was covered up with the blankets or the hospital gown would show his excitement. He should have asked Paul to drive downtown to pick up the food.Paul cleared his throat. “Here’s all I could find.” Tossing him a bag of M&M’s and gum. “Ready to go?”“We’ll leave you alone.” Crystal squeezed Kade’s hand. For the hundredth time since meeting her, he wished she would stay. But she said good-bye and left with Paul.Damn, he was glad Paul was already hooked with Ruby. Otherwise, his jealousy would make him crawl out of that bed and bring her back.

Guest Blog: Need You by Terra Kelly

In the Springtime of 2013, early one morning I woke from a dream. My first thought was 'this could be a story.' My second thought was 'where is my computer?' Once I wrote the dream down, I immediately had my husband read the few paragraphs. He looked at me and said, "this is great, I'm left wanting more." I actually felt tears start to emerge.

It was the day I would reclaim a dream I had for many years- I had the potential to be a writer. Now, some may be curious why I found my husband's words so emotional. Well, during my dietetic internship, the one person who was supposed to support me instead found ways to make the internship challenging and in the end daunting. At one point during the first half of the internship, she told me I wrote at an Elementary level.

She also flat out told me I was not a good writer.

For several years I believed her... until that morning of 2013.

In October 2013, I awoke from another dream. This dream would eventually become Catch Me, Book One. As an avid reader, I love reading book series'. Since I had two book ideas, I decided to get creative and see how a series could play out.
Here is the series so far:Book One: Drew and IsabelBook Two: Alex and AlyssaBook Three: Joshua and KenzieBook Four: Danny and; ShawnaBook 4.5 - Novella: Alex and AlyssaBook Five: Grant and GeorgieMore to come ...
Important: Each book can stand alone from the series.
I will be publishing books two through four this year, along with a novella about Alex and Alyssa. I can honestly say, I see, feel, hear, and smell their recipes. All four books coming this year are screaming to be put on paper, and I am ready to get them out of my head finally.
Since I have a nutrition background, and run a food blog at CafeTerraBlog. Every book I publish will always contain special recipes made by the characters. I will share photos of the recipes on the Terra Kelly website. A perfect addition to each book... who doesn't like food right?
I look forward to sharing this series with you. I hope you enjoy them as much I enjoy writing them for you! signature terrakelly

About the Author:
A romance nerd at heart, I tend to find inspiration in my dreams, or when walking my dog.  My love for romance goes all the way back to when I was 15, and laying on my best friend’s bed reading romance books.  It only took me 25 years to start putting all my stories on paper….well actually a computer.  I was born and raised in Michigan, now live in the South in North Carolina.  So my accent sounds like a Yankee with a slight Southern drawl.  When I am not writing you will find me reading, or baking.
My real life romance started when I was just 19.  Now over 20 years later, my husband is not only my lover but my best friend.  We only raise furry kids, we have one dog and two cats.  Our animals are all rescues.
I am a foodie, who loves creating recipes.
Over four years ago I started a food blog at CafeTerraBlog.  My love for food is why each of my books will always share new recipes made by the characters.I love connecting with my followers.  You can find me on Facebook and Twitter.  I will keep you up to date on what I am writing, book release dates, and so much more on my website.

Interview- Reaper Madness by Nessie Strange

Can you tell readers a little bit about yourself and what inspired to write in this particular genre?
I think I’ve always had a fascination with paranormal, fantasy and horror themed stories, whether it was in movies or books. So naturally I was drawn toward those elements in my own stories.
What is it about the paranormal, in particular vampires, that fascinates you so much?
For me it’s always been magical, imaginative, ‘un-real’ aspect of it. It’s something more, something different than everyday ‘real’ life. An escape. With vampires, I’ve always liked the monster versions much more--Salem’s Lot, Dracula, 30 Days of Night, for example--where there’s a bit more darkness to the stories, rather than the Twilight’s or alpha male romance type heroes.
What inspired you to write this book?
When I first came up with the idea for Living Dead Girl, I never envisioned a series. As I wrote and got to know the characters, however, this complex story developed in my head. Reaper Madness, which is the sequel, really begins to show just how complex the journey is for Jen and Jack, and how the many different characters intertwine and relate to each other.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Reaper Madness is told from two POV’s--Jen and Jack and follows both of them through the afterlife as they search for each other, and for the answers to the many questions that crop up during their journeys.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters' names? Do you try to match a name with a certain meaning to attributes of the character or do you search for names popular in certain time periods or regions?
I don’t spend a lot of time worrying about or planning character names, I just go with whatever sounds right for the character I’ve envisioned in my head. Most of the time it’s just an ordinary name. Of course it depends on the character, too. In Reaper Madness, I’ve started to weave in various world mythologies and religions, which inspired a few of the names.
Was one of your characters more challenging to write than another?
I try to put myself in the shoes of each character to decide what motivates them. In that sense, Merry, the villain from Living Dead Girl was a little tough to write. It was difficult to empathize with her. She’s mental, like totally psycho, and no matter what I did, I couldn’t find a way to relate to her. I hated what she did to the characters I’d grown the love.
Is there a character that you enjoyed writing more than any of the others?
I’ve discovered that I enjoy writing many of my male characters. Sam is a sarcastic, asshole, antihero type, but he’s got some great dialogue. Jack is a fun, happy-go-lucky guy who’s a bit rebellious and a little bit of a wise-ass, but he’s also been fun to write.
Do you have a formula for developing characters? Like do you create a character sketch or list of attributes before you start writing or do you just let the character develop as you write?
No formula whatsoever. I’ll start with a basic idea of who they are, and work out scenes  in my head. Mostly I let the character develop as I’m writing.
Can you tell readers a little bit about the world building in the book/series? How does this world differ from our normal world?
Part of this series takes places in current times, and most of that is in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. The fantasy/paranormal elements are woven in--like ghosts, etc--as though they belong there. The other parts take place in the afterlife, which is a series of interconnected worlds based upon various places found in world mythologies and religions (Purgatory, Hell, etc). With these, I’ve used my imagination as to how to weave them together. There are things that mirror real life as well as ideas based on the mythologies I’ve drawn inspiration from.
With the book being part of a series, are there any character or story arcs, that readers jumping in somewhere other than the first book, need to be aware of? Can these books be read as stand alones?
I think Reaper Madness can still be read as a standalone. While it technically continues the story after Living Dead Girl, the story itself is self-contained.
Would you like to leave readers with a little teaser or excerpt from the book?
I climbed the staircase to my apartment, stuck my key in the lock, and flung the door open. Sam reclined on the couch, his feet resting on the coffee table and his hands laced behind his head.
“Pet,” he said, with a grin.
I narrowed my eyes. “Why do you always let yourself in?”
He shrugged. “I did knock.”
“But you knewI wouldn’t be here.” I hooked my toe under the lip of the coffee table and yanked it toward me so his feet dropped to the floor.
He tilted his head back against the couch, his coarse, sandpapery laughter filling in the silence. When I first met him, Sam looked like a drugged-out punk rocker. While some of that had been from altering his appearance to freak me out, he was still a supernatural Sid Vicious look-alike with black spiky hair, pale skin, and a horrible attitude. And now I was stuck with him.
“Who’s the one with the attitude?” He sat forward and rested his forearms on his knees. “How was your review?”
“Fine.” Completely uneventful, boring, and none of his business. I sank into the recliner across from him.
He snorted. “Was it now?”
I met his eyes. “Yep.” We then engaged in what could best be described as a staring contest—the result of having two strong, stubborn personalities spending way too much time together. And possibly a little boredom.
“Uptight.” His lips curved up at the corners, but he still didn’t blink.
Oh, that was the game? We were name-calling now? I shouldn’t stoop to his level, but that didn’t mean I was backing down. Not uptight. More like suffocating in my own disappointment at being stuck with such a shabby reaper. So far, I was doing pretty well at not blinking back at him. I mirrored his expression. He brought out the most juvenile behavior in me.
“No, definitely uptight. Though it’s nothing a thick, long”—he paused and leaned closer to me, his smirk stretching into a devilish grin—“hard…”
And I blinked. “Motherfucker!”
He slouched back in his seat, chuckling. “Amateur.”
“I’ll beat you one of these days.”

Floor Time Excerpt:
Two o’clock became two forty-five with no guests. No big surprise. She made it through half of her water and a few chapters of the latest hot vampire novel she’d brought with her to pass the time. Bored, she got up to walk around when she saw a car pull into the long gravel drive. She watched as Jack unfolded his tall frame out of the Corvette and walked around to reach into the passenger’s seat. It struck her that she had never seen him in anything but a suit, or at least dress pants, shirt, and tie, as she admired his ass in the dark jeans. He looked good enough to eat. But panic replaced her blooming desire. What was he doing at her open house? Was there a problem with their deal? She glimpsed a shopping bag from the local organic chain grocery in one hand. He grinned at her, lighting up his arresting eyes. Her breath caught in her throat.Shit.She had made a vow to herself she would not get caught up in the Jack Gordon whirlwind. However, here she was, high and mighty, and yet about to explode with need for his lips on hers.Double shit.“I thought you might be lonely all the way out here and we should have a picnic. What do you say?” He made his way to the front door. He wore a plain burgundy t-shirt, jeans that hugged his front as nicely as his rear, and driving shoes. Momentarily blinded by lust, she fought the impulse to pull him into the foyer and make him fuck her until she was spent.Nice, very nice. The guy brings you a picnic and you want to skip right to the after-play?Turning on her heel she headed back into the house without even responding to his suggestion, assuming he would follow her. Sara realized she had to get control of herself before talking or her voice would surely betray her. She glanced at her watch. Three p.m. – she had to focus on her job for one more hour. Let him wait.“Don’t you have an open house of your own?” She sounded a tad more irritable than she intended.“Nope.” He walked right into her personal space, brushed her hair out of her face and kissed her. His firm lips remained noncommittal. She shivered as he kept his hand on her neck under her hair. He caressed her almost absentmindedly as he looked around at the house.“Well, the view is great,” he admitted as he strode into the front bedroom suite. Sara watched as he walked out of that room and took in at the high cathedral ceilings made of light ash wood. Then he whistled, picked up his grocery bag, and walked into the kitchen complete with new gleaming stainless steel appliances and white tile floor.“Nice, but it’s sort of cold in here, isn’t it? Maybe some color, flowers or something, would help?”“Fuck off, Jack. I don’t need your help. Why are you here, anyway?”“Easy, tiger, easy.” He leaned on the countertop. “I know you know what to do. I can’t help it. It’s second nature for me to say something about the house first.” Sara caught herself clenching and unclenching her fists, and stopped.Damn the man, anyway. She couldn’t even stay mad at him. She slumped against the doorframe.“It’s a shit listing. I don’t get any showings and hardly any new buyers from these open houses. The sellers couldn’t care less that it sits here and gets stale.” She sighed, then relaxed, only to have her desire for him rush over her like a tidal wave. He attended to his grocery bag and began setting stuff on the counter.“What the hell am I going to do when a guest shows up, Jack? Put that crap away.”“It’s okay, babe, we’ll just say we rolled out the red carpet for your potential buyers with these nice strawberries and this cream.” He pulled the last container from the bag with a flourish.“You are insane, you know that?” She stared at the array of stuff on the counter.“You won’t think that when I show you this amazing bottle of wine I found. I forgot I had it.” He pulled out a green bottle with a French label of some sort, two wine glasses, and a corkscrew.“Um, yeah, well, I’m not really comfortable doing this here. I mean, it’s not my kitchen.” Sara gulped as she took another step away from him to get his smell out of her nose.“Sure it is.” He worked the cork out, allowing her to admire the amazing definition of his arms. “I’ll bet you’ve spent more time in this fucked-up house with its million-dollar view than you have in your own house since you listed it. I mean, you do opens, you refill sales brochures, you check on the lawn – what else? Tell me I’m wrong.” He pulled the cork free, splashed some golden liquid into each glass, and handed one to her. By the time he’d completed the task, Sara had made her way nearly six feet away from him.“Baby, I don’t bite,” he said, holding out the glass to her.She surged forward, as if to prove she wasn’t afraid, grabbing the glass as she passed.
“Thanks. Never had a happy hour at an open house.”

Book Description:
Jack Gordon thought he’d finally made it. He had a wildly successful career, money in the bank and even returned to his life as Dom, putting an end to a string of unfulfilling sexual encounters. Now that he's made the ultimate commitment to Sara Thornton, he believes all is right in their world. However, a series of misunderstandings and a dose of self-fulfilling prophesy bring his perfectly crafted house of cards tumbling down around him, forcing him to confront lingering misgivings about marriage and trust. Could those be the only two things he can never achieve?
Sara struggles with her intense need for Jack and her desire for less volatility in her busy life, two goals which appear to be mutually exclusive. Although willing to put in the time and emotional effort to make their relationship work, she finds it futile and frustrating, littered with clashes thanks to near-identical personalities and temperaments. Given Sara’s history, easing back into the comfortable status quo becomes easier than fighting a war with the one person who should be her safe haven. But will the easier choice satisfy her the way only Jack can? Is her "war" one that comes from without or within?
Buffeted by circumstance, temptation and distraction, Jack and Sara’s tenuous relationship crumbles, sparking a continuous quest for the ever elusive: trust, love and acceptance. By the time they rebuild a foundation for renewal, fate has other plans. This leaves them both reeling, once again questioning their destiny.

Sweat Equity Excerpt:
Jack watched his now ex-fiancée screech out onto the quiet street, sipped his bourbon and relished its slow lubrication of the horror at what had just happened. He sank back into the chair and glared at the fucked up still life of the condom and ring together on the table.“Happiness Thwarted” he could call it, or even better, “In Which Jack Is a Dumb Ass.” The purple foil packets stacked next to the nearly twenty-thousand-dollar hunk of metal and compressed coal he’d put so much faith in just a few months ago. “Goddamnit.” He swept the whole mess onto the floor. His usual method of instant spin control had abandoned him. He had nothing, remained a hollow shell, scraped clean, raw and pulsing like a six-foot five-inch exposed nerve ending. The fucking condoms. He’d left them there from over a year ago. From when he’d taken that crazy-ass blonde bitch of a client away for a weekend. The weekend she tried to convince him to marry her. But he’d already met Sara by then. So, he had fucked the woman six ways to Sunday then dropped her at her house, his mind and heart elsewhere.Oh, the bitter irony of the situation did not escape him. Vegas had been fun, sure. He’d flirted like crazy and let some ladies buy him drinks but he went to bed alone every single night without a single qualm or regret. He hadn’t talked to Sara that week, but he’d been busy, serving on countless panels and attending dozens of stupid glad-handing receptions. When he wasn’t doing that he’d played Texas Hold ’em and lost his ass with gleeful abandon. He’d had his mind firmly fixed on the future. With Sara. He’d even entertained a pretty out-there fantasy of her beautiful body, swollen and full with their child.“Oh fuck.” His face and eyes burned. His throat closed up. The room spun. He had to get her back. How? Was he even worthy? No, he wasn’t. But he didn’t care.Jack got up, retrieved the expensive ring from the floor and set it on the front hall table with his other stuff. His heartbeat pounded at the sight of it. Anger followed close on the heels of despair. The house echoed with silence. He knew what he needed. Picking up his smart phone he quick dialed his friend, Suzanne.“Hey, Jack, what’s up?”“I need to talk.”“Where are you?” The noise of her beer bar receded, so he assumed she must have walked into the brewery.“Home. But I’m coming over. You gonna be there?”“Well, I wasn’t, but I’ll stick around.” Silence spun out between them before she spoke again. “You did it, didn’t you?”Jack dragged a hand through his hair. He knew exactly what she meant. “Yeah. I did.”“Oh hell.” The ensuing silence deafened him. He trusted Suzanne more than he trusted just about anyone, except her business partner, who was currently on the West Coast at some beer conference. “C’mon over, you fucking idiot. I’ll buy you a beer.” Jack slumped against the wall, relieved to have somewhere to go, sick to his stomach and emptier than he’d ever felt in his entire life.

Excerpt Closing Costs:
Once Jack and Sara had eased back into a wary friendship, the entire Stewart Real Estate Company rejoiced because it meant fewer fraught upper management meetings. Jack Gordon was a hard-ass leader, tough, firm, driven and with high expectations of everyone around him. He had turned the brokerage around. But for almost a year he’d been impossible to work with – antsy, quick tempered, never seeming to leave the office even to sleep or eat except on Tuesdays and Thursdays – the days he had Kate at his house.Their conversations lasted long into the night nearly three or four times a week and between sorting through work issues and discussing theories of raising a successful future woman, they’d drifted into more personal details.“So…” she’d asked at one point, needing to know but dreading the answer at the same time. “Have you, um, moved on, like I told you to?”“Since when do I do what you tell me?”She’d shivered at the sound of his voice. It had compelled her in so many ways, for good and bad. She needed to hear it, like she needed to drink water.“Never mind.”“And you? Find a new boyfriend yet?”“Yeah, in all my spare time, I’m out clubbing, picking up guys.”“Well, there is the internet.”“That’s sick. You gonna answer me?”He sighed. “I’ve been down at the club again. Playing.” Sara shut her eyes.“Why didn’t you ever take me there? I would’ve…”He cut her off. “You weren’t ready and every time I thought you were, you’d scream at me to get the hell out of your life, if memory serves.”“Yeah, I guess so. We sure are good at bad timing, aren’t we?”“Uh huh. You, my dear, are the queen of overreaction. But I still love you.”Her scalp had tingled and she snuggled down in the covers. “Don’t know why. I’m a real bitch, I hear.”He chuckled and her thighs tightened at the sound. “You horny, baby? That what this is about?”She’d bitten her lip. “You psychic?”“Only as relates to you.”“Good night Jack. See you tomorrow.”“Wait – let’s have phone sex. It’ll be fun.”It had been her turn to chuckle. “You are so…”“Blue-balled? Seriously Sara. I may be messing around downtown but I don’t…I can’t…oh hell why am I telling you anyway. You’ll just gloat.”“No, I won’t. Tell me.”“Another time. When you’re on your knees, begging me.”“Dream on.”“No, you will be.”She’d shuddered, her whole body on fire now with need for his hands, his lips, his voice. “Stop it.”“I’m not doing anything.”She’d sighed, realizing the hopelessness of her whole relationship with him.

Book Description:
Astra, a trapeze artist in an illegal interstellar circus, falls for a powerful renegade magician, and the attraction between them is strong enough to draw the ruling coven, the painful past, and the fury of space down upon them.

About the Author:
The child of two college professors, I left high school to pursue a career in ballet. Since then, I’ve worked in theater and advertising, earned a Master’s degree and appeared on reality TV, and if you can find a “career path” in that, you have a better eye for pattern than I do.
My debut novel, ‘and Falling, Fly‘ was named one of the top sci-fi/fantasy books of 2010 by Library Journal, Barnes & Noble’s Sci-Fi Blog, and Dear Author.  My follow-up, ‘In Dreams Begin‘ was accorded the same honor by Fantasy Literature. ‘The Incrementalists,’ co-written with Steven Brust, was one Publisher’s Weekly Top 10 Sci-Fi/Fantasy titles for Fall 2013, and recently, I've started exploring indie publishing with "Offerings," a serialized sacred erotica.
I write angels and scientists, demons, faeries and revolutionaries, secret societies and sacred sex because I’m interested in the places where myth and modernity tangle. I’m a mother and a rebel, a wife and a romantic.  I’m a liberal living in Texas, an existentialist witch, and a sucker for paradox – lucky thing, right?
