Ms. Pryll motioned her forward. Ah, her eye rolling had beennoticed. Amelie really wasn’t off to a good start today. On top of herintestinal grumbling, she was feeling the beginnings of a tension headache creepingup the back of her neck.
Just as she was standing up to assume the position at thefront of the classroom, someone stumbled through the door. It was Hudson. Hewas slumping, holding on to the doorframe. Hudson wouldn’t be drawing attentionto himself in normal circumstances. Something was wrong. Ms. Pryll was finallypulled from her flirting by the fact that the rest of the class was staring atthe doorway. As they watched, Hudson slid down the doorframe into a huddledposition.
“Now Mr. Crowe, please come in and sit down,” said Ms.Pryll, with exasperation.
Hudson managed to hold up a small blue object, before slumping forward.
“Dude’s been drinking?” Ryan laughed from the back.
Hudson tried one more time to raise his head and lift thething in his hands. Everyone in the class just stared at him. The front ofAmelie’s forehead suddenly exploded with images, and the lighted words from thecereal box this morning made sense.
Low. Sugar. Bad.
“He’s not drunk,” Amelie snapped. “That’s a glucose meter.He’s diabetic.”
Amelie dropped her notebook and ran to the door, falling toher knees beside Hudson. She had a vague notion that this hurt and she would bebruised later, before she grabbed Hudson’s head. She didn’t know if people ininsulin shock had seizures or not, but that didn’t matter. She knew what to do.She had been told by something more reliable than memory. Low blood sugar wasbad.
What to do? Okay, Elodie had her phone. What else?Jack, he always ate breakfast at his desk. Today it was a bottle of orangejuice. Thank god.
“Elodie, call 911—now! Jack, throw me your OJ,” Ameliesnapped.
Jack just smirked at her, completely disengaged in the factthat another human being was in crisis. A wave of fury replaced the images in Amelie’shead, making everything around her look shiny, sharp, and red. The world beganto move in slow motion. She turned, her eyes met Jack’s, and she let herwell-constructed shields drop … just… drop. The energy that flowed out of herfelt glorious.
“Jack, throw me your OJ, now,” she said, softly this time.She saw the shocked look on Jack’s face, but he immediately grabbed the OJ andtossed it to her. The chemical wave that seemed to be her birthright rolledover him, through him, past him and across the class … person by person, faceby face.

"I have abad feeling about this," Ryan muttered.
"Don't beridiculous," Jade replied, leading the way toward the temple. "We camehere for the minerals, and we're going to find them."
As theyapproached the temple, they could see that it was ancient, with large stonecolumns and carvings covering the walls. They made their way inside, and themineral finder began to beep rapidly.
"There itis," Jade said, pointing to a door at the end of the chamber. "That'swhere the scanner is leading us."
They cautiouslyapproached the door, which was adorned with strange symbols and carvings. Jadehesitated for a moment, but then pushed the door open.
When the doorcreaked open, they saw a blinding light emanating from inside the chamber. Theyshielded their eyes and cautiously stepped inside, drawn toward the powerfulenergy source.
Jade and his team crept through the temple. The air grew colder, and they felta sense of unease.
The mineralfinder beeped louder as they approached the large chamber door. Ryan, theteam's technician, examined the door and found that it was heavily secured.
They noticedstrange markings etched on the walls. The markings resembled scratches, as ifclaws or sharp objects made them. Upon closer inspection, Jade realized themarkings were actually a form of language, but one that he had never seenbefore.
Ryan, who hadsome expertise in ancient languages, inspected the markings. "This isn'tany language that I recognize," he said, furrowing his brow inconcentration. "It looks like some kind of primitive tool made it, like aclaw or a rock."
Jasper, who hadbeen scanning the temple with his handheld device, interrupted. "Guys, I'mgetting some strange readings here," he said, pointing to his device."It looks like there's some kind of energy emanating from the wallsthemselves."
Jade walked overto Jasper. "That's strange." He looked at the device. "There'sdefinitely something here, but I can't quite make out what it is."
"It seemsto radiate from behind this door." Jade touched a door at the end of thehallway with strange markings.
Jasper, theteam's muscle, stepped forward and used his strength to force the door open. Insidethe chamber, they found a glowing orb emitting a powerful energy. Jadeapproached the orb and scrutinized it, trying to identify its properties.
As he did so,the orb suddenly flared up with a blinding light, knocking the team off theirfeet.
When theyregained their senses, they found the orb had disappeared and the chamber wasnow empty.
Jade, Ryan, andJasper looked at each other, stunned by what had just happened. They realizedthey had stumbled upon something beyond their understanding and knew that theyneeded to report their findings to their superiors. A flash of lightning sent shadows looming, blocky figures indark raincoats, as they hefted my steamer trunk from the hold and onto the deckof the airship. Rain pummelled them, driven sideways by the wind. Crewscrambled to tie ropes after several corroded brass moorings tore free of theold dock. The deck swayed beneath me, so I widened my stance. I shifted into afighting pose and pulled the serrated sword from its bone sheath. My Ashur wasthe weapon of choice for Solhan ladies, but I was no lady.
“Where do you think you’re taking that?” I asked, my ominoustone punctuated with thunder.
The thugs in raincoats froze, surprised to see me. Someonehad drugged my meal and barred my cabin door from the outside. Fortunately, Ihad invisible Bogle companions following me everywhere, always the first to eatmy meals, not because they were official food testers but because they wereeternally hungry. They also removed the metal bar from the outside, so Iescaped without needing to cut through the cabin wall, which I would have done.I would do anything to protect that trunk.
“No pithy comeback or plausible excuse?” I said,disappointed. “You two really are thick. Who do you work for?”
The deckhands saw my drawn blade and froze too. This olddock was not Highcrowne, likely a pirate mooring off the usual air routes.Either they were trying to find refuge in the storm, or they were in on it too.I didn’t think they were pirates, else they would all be armed and coming at mewith swords, but something was off about them. That’s what I got for eschewingthe premier airship liners with their security protection, courtesy of RoseIndustries. I’d been trying to lay low, but it looked like I would need to belaying low a few bad guys instead.
“We don’t want any trouble,” one of the crew said, raisinghis hands.
“Untie us and get us back underway and there won’t be any,”I said. I didn’t know how to fly this thing, and so I couldn’t kill them, astempting as it was. The two holding my trunk, however…. “I told you both to setthat down. Gently.”
They obeyed. Never trust anyone who complies so quickly. Notin this line of work. I ignored the crew, their hands full of ropes, theirbedraggled clothing too threadbare to hide any weapons, and I went for theraincoats.
One whipped out a flintlock pistol. Fool. It was too wet tofire. The other was slightly smarter, revealing a bullwhip. He was fast too. Hestruck, wrapping it around the tip of my sword before I got to him.
The one weakness of a serrated blade was howeasily it could be caught, but that usually worked both ways. It was fantasticfor disarming an opponent, and if it was sharp enough—as mine was—it slicedright through anything, including leather. His whip lost a third of its length,and a heartbeat later I had the tip of my sword pointed at his eye. The onewith the useless pistol donned brass knuckles and came for me, but I wasn’tonly a good swordswoman, I was a necromancer. Big mistake.
