Excerpt 2:  From Tales of theWythenwood: The Taker of Faces.

Tonightis the night, thought the Taker of Faces. She stood within the moonlit forestlooking out to a pool, eerie in its stillness. The Taker inhaled deeply, asgrace itself walked into the scene, tall and elegant, powerful and strong yetwith a step so light that she could imagine that its hooves would not bend ablade of grass as it trod. As moonbeams stained all they touched anotherworldly blue, she imagined them as fairies, half-remembered from childhoodtales, come to light the darkness.

Slowly, the stag dipped its noble head to lap water from the pond, tiny ripplesbreaking its pristine surface. The Taker dug her fingernails into the palms ofher hands as the anticipation welled, so giddy did she feel that the trickle ofochre that dripped from her hands to the floor went unnoticed. Then, the stag, ever so slightly, moved its head. Elation filled her, dizzying euphoria thattingled in her toes and heightened every sense, for now, she truly sawit—beauty.

Forbarely a moment, a single, glorious moment the stag’s features were fullyrevealed beneath the shimmering cobalt rays. Glistening magnificently, itsantlers cast a long and mesmerizing shadow. If there was such a thing as beautyin the world, this was it. She ran her fingers slowly down the length of herface, drinking in the sensation of the gnarled and mottled surface. Andsilently, she vowed that that beauty would be hers.

But,like a burrowing insect, a grain of doubt crawled inside, niggling at the darkrecesses of her mind. Intrusive images flittered past distractingly, a graypelt illuminated in the darkness, yellow eyes shining like flames untamed, adistorted reflection in the water’s mirrored surface. There were sounds too,her rasping tongueless scream played over and over as she relived pummeled the wolf’stattered corpse with her fists until the skin of her knuckles was bare andragged. It had deceived her—it was not the one, this time would be different.

Steelingherself, she took the rope from her shoulder, one end had already been securedaround the trunk of a tree and hung across its sturdiest bough, beforeproceeding to lasso its looped end over the stag’s antlers. Immediately ittried to bolt, rearing onto its hindlegs as the rope pulled taut. The Takerfound one corner of her crooked mouth, turning wryly upward as she watched thecreature thrash in wild desperation. The moment when she could leave her bodybehind and be reborn in the form of something new felt near, felt tangible—shecould almost taste it with what remained of her tongue. Dropping her guard, ashort, sharp, mirthful bark escaped her throat. Swinging around, the deerturned to face her, eyes wide, startled and blazing with fury.

Loweringits head, it charged full pelt towards the Taker, rearing up once more as againit reached the end of its tether. With faces inches apart the two stood witheyes interlocked, the stag roared gutturally at its tormentor while the Takerbared her teeth in a dog-like snarl, vehemently hissing all the while.

Slowly, without breaking her gaze she slipped one hand into the pocket of her tunic. For a moment she could not locate the item she sought amidst the folds ofweather-beaten leather. Staying calm, she felt a butterfly of elation flutterwithin her stomach as she grasped a small wooden cylinder, barely thicker thanher smallest finger. Deftly, she slipped a second item into the tube andbrought it up to her lips and blew. The stag reeled from the sudden sting, backand forth it swung its great head as it tried with all it could muster todislodge the dart that protruded from its neck.

Nowthe butterfly truly unfurled its wings within in her and she danced upon thespot, snorting and giggling with childish jubilance as she did. The peak of themountain she had tried to scale so many times was so near. Over and over thewords jigged through her thoughts melodiously—this one is the one, this one isthe one.

Theglee in her eyes seemed all the merrier as the moon’s rays of incandescentsilver glinted mischievously upon them. She knew this part well, watching asthe stag’s movements slowed to a mournful trudge. The Taker sat down on themoist ground, licking the blood from her palms like a wounded animal andwaited.

Shedid not have to wait long before all the will in the world was no longer enoughto keep the stag’s eyes from closing. Grunting, she flipped the beast to itsback and with practiced efficiency trussed its legs with the rope and tipped itsideways onto a crude sled, crafted from branches and twigs knotted togetherwith vine.

Her muscles protested as she heaved her ladensled—but her heart sang. Like a caterpillar, she would soon be transformed, reborn into something pure and beautiful. Glancing down at the mess of twistedlabyrinthine scarring that was her hand, she smiled, imagining it peel awaylike the used husk of a chrysalis. Soon she would be what she was alwayssupposed to be, soon she would be elevated.

“I felt haunted by him.”
“Not in the way my father had been haunted. I believed that my father’s will had been taken from him, that Veles acted through him. Perhaps that was a true possession, and I merely flirted at the edges of it. Enchanted. Maybe that was how it had begun with my father.”

“Deliciously unpredictable and absolutely engrossing, Nicola Solvinic’s The Hunter’s Daughter is one of the best debuts I’ve read in a very long time. With a dash of magical realism and the kind of complicated, conflicted heroine I love, Solvinic pulls off a nearly impossible feat: making the reader care about a woman who may well be following in her serial killer father’s footsteps. Put The Hunter’s Daughter at the top of your TBR list—I loved this book!”

Excerpt:

“In my culture, names have strong meanings.” D’lanepulled out the curved blade strapped to his arm and cut up the meat he’d beeneating earlier into small precise pieces. “They’re meant to impart wisdom andadvice throughout our lives.”

She straightened and tucked her hands onto her lap. This was an interesting conversational change. “There are, or at least used tobe, cultures on Earth that believed the same. I’ve always loved that philosophy. What does yours mean?”

“Mine is a powerful name.” His lips were roguishlytipped up at the corner, exposing sharp eye teeth. He settled into his seat, asif preparing to lecture a student. The surrounding mess hall noise dimmed asshe focused on him. “I am named after one of our past kings. A mightyChriw’rian who fought valiantly against the Hissat or, as you humans call them, the Anunnaki. He’s credited with their first defeat on our planet.”

She locked her fingers together. “Really?”

He placed the curved knife beside her tray. “For yourprotein.”

Shannon glanced around the room. Surely someone wouldjump in to stop him from offering her a weapon. When no one did, she picked upthe knife and cut up the last bit of food on her plate, a wrinkled sausage linkin an off-putting green color. The blade cut smoothly through the dehydratedchunk. “Thank you.”

She fingered the metal handle. Smooth and warm in herhand, she tilted the blade far enough to see her reflection on its surface. Shewanted to keep it. She placed the knife beside her tray and glanced up asD’lane consumed the last of his jerky.

He pushed his empty tray to the side. “The previousD’lane crashed his warship into the Anunnaki fighter set to bomb our mostvulnerable. His actions disrupted the mothership and allowed the rest of thefleet to destroy them. If not for his heroic actions, my planet wouldn’t
have survived their last attack.”

She ate a bite of the sausage and winced. It foughther with every chew. Mouth dry, she discreetly spit it into her napkin. A fewbrows arched in her direction, including D’lane’s. To give herself something todo, she handed the knife back, handle first. He wouldn’t have let her keep itanyway. “Have you figured out how your name dictates your future?”

“Yes.” His fingers brushed hers as he accepted itsreturn. The silver metal blurred when he holstered the blade. This male movedquickly.

She was afraid to ask about his future. She kind ofliked this particular alien and didn’t want to see him dying any time soon.“And?”

He grinned and flashed his sharp canines. “One beliefis I will be a great benefit to my people, but unable to participate in theultimate victory of my path.”

“Does that mean you expect to die?” Shannon asked, undecided on if his smile edged from sexy into frightening.

“It is a possibility.”

She picked up her sausage, put it back down, andfrowned. “You said one of the meanings. Can you choose another path?”

“There are many possibilities that exist for anindividual. The Namegivers do not choose lightly when gifting a child at birthwith their destiny. I could follow another D’lane’s path, or I could forge myown fate and provide a future for another down the line as the previous D’lanedid.”

“Which destiny is yours?”

“I follow the path of the king.”

“Ah.” She ran her finger over the smooth surface ofthe table. Did that mean he expected to die or was there another path withinthat destiny he would follow? How did someone know which one to follow?

It had taken her months in college to discover shewasn’t interested in chemistry. Six long hellish months. The frustration alonefor losing that small bit of time seemed inconsequential when compared to thepossibility of traveling an entire lifetime down the wrong path.

He tapped the table. “What does your name mean?”

She huffed, knowing her name meant little whencompared to his. She’d looked it up once after an unpleasant conversation withher father. “It means possessor of wisdom.”

Her father had wanted to call her Clair after hissister, but her mother had gone with Shannon after hearing it on a show duringlabor. The uncomfortable conversation on how he’d hated her name had been aslight peek into her mother’s past, even as her dad lay drunk on the couch. He’d apologized later, but the damage had already been done. She forced a laughto lighten the mood. “If you take it to mean I went to school, then I’ve livedup to the title.”

“It is accurate.” His nail pressed down on the table’ssurface. A bit of plastic curled in its wake. His nails were either extremelydurable or the tables were flimsy. Shannon flattened her hand next to her trayand curled her fingers. She scratched at the table and winced as her nail bentback. “How so?”

“You were revived for information that will savebillions of lives and stop a war.”
