Historical romance writers, take note! There's story gold in those Victorian sex guides. I'd really like to see a hero with a crooked back who believes his parents made him that way by having sex on the stairs and is very bitter about it. Quite honestly, I'd like to see more period-specific beliefs about sex and reproduction employed in historical romance. Let's see more old ladies whispering to each other "She's so much like her lovely mother; now we all know who was having the most fun in bed that night!"

Shelfies – The Research Shelf

This thing called #shelfie is going around Twitter right now, and I thought readers might be interested in seeing my research shelf. When we finished our basement, my husband built me a custom writing office, which includes a library that houses my many hundreds of books, but this particular shelf is in an alcove right […]

"There is a growing movement of people who are interested in the incredible U.S. Latino/a writers and artists who have turned to science fiction, fantasy, and other speculative genres. Latino/a Rising: An Anthology of U.S. Latino/a Speculative Fiction will introduce the public to the work of these writers and artists.

With the exception of Edward James Olmos’ Bladerunner and Battlestar Galactica, positive U.S. Latino/a characters have been largely absent from mainstream speculative fiction novels and films. Films such as Men in Black and Alien Nation, and shows such as X-Files, express the anxiety that the mainstream has concerning Latinos/as and recent immigrants. Latino/a Rising will contest this trend, showing how Latino/a writers and artists are transforming the genres."

Latino/a Rising

Latino/a Rising is the first collection of U.S. Latino/a science fiction, fantasy, and other speculative genres.

Panverse Online Store Now Open

My publisher has opened their online store for ebook sales, so you can now purchase The Bone Flower Throne directly from them. The price is the same as at other online retailers, but there are several good reasons to buy directly from Panverse. First, for the price of a single book from any of the […]

Misogyny in SF/F – Some Thoughts

This last weekend I attended the local MALcon just a few minutes down the road from my house. I only went on Saturday, to see if it was something I’d like to participate in in the future, and with departure for Loncon just days away, I didn’t want to spend too much time away from […]

Review: Five Dances with Death by Austin Briggs

I’m on a quest to read as much Aztec-related fiction as I can find, to get a feel for what other authors have done and learn a bit–to help me in my own writing–and since much of it doesn’t get a whole lot of attention, I’d like to start reviewing these works I read on […]

World Fantasy Awards

The World Fantasy Awards nominees were announced last night, and I’m so thrilled to see Zelda Devon nominated under the Best Artist category. Zelda did the fabulous cover art for The Bone Flower Throne, and I have loved her work with Kurt Huggins for years; they illustrated my Realms of Fantasy story “The Hearts of […]

Writerly Meme Fun!

So, over at Facebook, my friend Theresa Crater tagged me to the seven lines meme, where you go to page seven of your WIP and post seven lines, so here they are, from The Bone Flower Queen: In fact, one of those “late-night duties” was standing with the other men, looking annoyingly smug. For days, […]
