"A 2004 study showed that the Hispanos in San Luis valley are about one-third Indian and two-thirds Spanish-European. They have a small portion of African ancestry, averaging 3 percent. The Hispanos generally resemble other Hispanic and Mexican-American groups, while having a somewhat higher proportion of European blood than the rest. Genetic research also has confirmed the harshly one-sided nature of the admixture. By paying special attention to the y chromosome and the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), scientists proved that the genetic exchange in the early years of New Mexico was almost entirely between Spanish males and Indian females."

"Even when creating work that appeals to mainstream sensibilities, recognition and acceptance are areas where diverse creators face the biggest challenges, resulting in admirable works worthy of a larger audience languishing in obscurity. Popular entertainment and trade publications can help raise awareness for creative properties by running profile pieces and reviews, but they tend to focus on mainstream work that pushes the conventional narrative. Many fans are demanding more diversity in comics, movies and TV. What you may not realize is that there's already a community of creators producing stories about diverse characters. Now is a great time to get into their work.

A fascinating discussion of non-European mythical creatures. Silvia Moreno-Garcia talks about some Mexican creatures/legends/concepts that are pretty interesting; her description of the nahual concept cleared up a lot of things for me, since I've often seen conflicting information about what a nahual is. Now I can see it's changed meanings over time thanks to some Christianization. Some creatures that don't get a mention that are interesting are the ahuitzotl--the 5-handed water monster that lived in Lake Texcoco that was said to eat the eyes, fingernails, and teeth of drowning victims--and civatateos--vampiric noblewomen who died in childbirth and rose from the dead as servants of the god Tezcatlipoca. I've never heard of the chaneques, so I'm looking forward to researching them.

"So here’s the quick version: The Daily Show recruited fans of the Washington Racial Slurs via twitter to participate in a panel about the name change. They chose four of them, who sat in a hotel conference room with Jason Jones of the Daily Show for awhile, as he asked them a bunch of questions–even pulling out a dictionary to read the definition of “that word” and the like. The show also had a panel of the Native activists, asking them questions about why the name is racist, offensive, and needs to be changed. Then, the show brought the two panels together, and things, apparently, got “heated.”"

All the texts I've read until now have pretty much said that octli was used primarily as a ritual drink by the priesthood, and that outside the priesthood, only the oldest of the populations was allowed to partake (because they'd earned the privilege to be drunk without shame), so these findings at Teotihuacan suggesting a much wider use by the general population as a matter of survival are interesting.

I've heard rumblings of the Historical Romance genre being dead these days (because writing dead, unsellable genres is how I roll), so it's nice to see a take-down of that rumor.
"Maybe New York is becoming more Regency-centric," says author Grace Burrowes, "but five years ago, I didn't see WWI, Edwardian, Egyptian, Gaslight, or even Western romances in the numbers I see them now. We have Georgian erotic, Scottish early-modern, Roaring Twenties... all manner of periods and subgenres springing forth that veer away from the Regency with excellent results."
Maybe instead I'm getting into this genre at just the right time.
