That Old Flame of Mine

That Old Flame of Mine, the first book in the Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Mysteries will be out next week, on April 2nd! Yay! It feels like forever since we sent it in. The publishing process doesn't move quickly.

We will be doing a mini book tour in Tennessee next week, with stops in Nashville, Knoxville, Sevierville and Pigeon Forge.

Blurb: Set in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, J. J. Cook’s thrilling new mystery series features Fire Chief Stella Griffin, who solves crime with the help of her predecessor, who just happens to be a ghost…

From Melissa's Mochas, Mysteries and More: "The writing team of Jim and Joyce Lavene (under the pen name JJ Cook) have created a wonderful new Southern cozy series - the Sweet Pepper Fire Brigade Series - set in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

Stella has left a cheating boyfriend behind in Chicago to start up a fire brigade in Sweet Pepper - not knowing there is an ulterior motive behind her being chosen for the job. When her good friend Tory dies in what appears to be an accidental house fire, Stella suspects arson and murder, especially when she discovers suspicious fires have haunted the woman for years. Aided by the ghost of the former fire chief Eric Gamlyn, Stella attempts to sniff out a killer while weeding through the townsfolk's secrets, including a few right in her own family!

There are so many questions left unanswered by the end of this book that the wait for book #2 is going to be a killer. Stella and Eric have developed a surprisingly touching relationship, and are a crime-solving duo to be reckoned with."

Blurb from A Haunting Dream

A Haunting Dream
By Joyce and Jim Lavene
ISBN: 978-0-425-25179-9
from Berkley Prime Crime

I crawled out of the ditch as quickly as I could, my heart pounding, the ghost ship pushed from my thoughts like yesterday’s high tide. I’d almost fallen right on the person. It was hard to tell for certain in the dim light, but the face looked like it belonged to Chuck Sparks.

Nothing but Banker determination made me go back to the ditch and try to decide if he was still alive. I got down close bedside him. I wasn’t a doctor, but I couldn’t feel a pulse. He felt cold. His body was stiff to the touch.

I used the light from my cell phone to look at him more carefully. It was Chuck. He was covered in sand as though he’d been rolled in it. Had someone buried him and the tide had shifted the sand?

I tried using the phone to call someone for help. No signal. At that point, it was a better flashlight than a phone. I didn’t want to leave Chuck alone but I had no choice. There was only so much I could do to help by myself.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I have to go. I’ll be right back with someone who can do something for you. Don’t worry. You’ll be fine.”

As I started to get to my feet, his hand moved, clutching at my skirt beside it. His ghastly white face turned and looked at me as it had in the previous vision. “Help her.”

Looking up for a moment

Being a writer is different from many other careers. You're busy, sometimes very busy, like other occupations.

The only difference is that none of it is real.

Oh, it's real enough to you. The setting. The characters. You work hard to make them real to you so they can be real to your readers.

But they aren't really there - except in your mind.

It's always amazing when you're in the middle of a book and the roof is leaking and needs repair.

Where did that come from? I didn't write that into the plot!

No, wait. That's the REAL roof in my REAL house!

A character has to take her dog to the vet and you realize your REAL dog needed to go last week.

It's not easy living in two or three worlds at one time. Sometimes it's hard to know which world is real.
