Cover Reveal & Contest for HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING FOR A ROYAL SPY!

Thanks for joining me this week for the cover reveal of Book Three in the Renegade Royals Series, HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING FOR A ROYAL SPY.

And here it is!!

Gorgeous, right? All my covers are lovely, but I think this one is my favorite. It genuinely captures the feel of the book, too.

I promised you a final excerpt, and here it is. In this scene, Will is trying to apologize for acting like an idiot years ago, when he first kissed Evie and then basically fled the scene:

Staring blindly down the lane, Evie swallowed hard against the memories that congealed like suet in the center of her chest.

“We were both young then, and I was silly.” Evie tried to sound like a sensible woman instead of a heart-broken girl. “I had no right to expect…things from you.”

Will’s hands tightened on the reins. The horses broke into a canter, and for a moment his attention was fixed on the animals. When he’d settled them into a more leisurely pace, he looked down at her with a narrow, irritated gaze.

“Why are you scowling at me?” she protested. “I just told you it wasn’t your fault.”

“Of course it was my fault. And you had every reason to expect things from me.”

She pressed a hand to her chest, nearly breathless. “What…what things?”

“Courtesy and respect, to begin with,” he said from between gritted teeth. “And affection. I was a complete bounder to treat you in such a cavalier fashion.”

He sounded so disgusted with himself that she had to smile. “You were, rather. It felt horrible.”

“If it’s any consolation, I felt horrible about it, too. For a very long time.” He blew out an exasperated breath. “I did try to apologize a few years ago, though, if you recall. You weren’t very receptive to it.”

She wanted to bury her burning face in her hands. But in some strange way it was a relief to be able to talk about what had happened between them. To be candid as they’d once been with each other.

“I wasn’t ready to hear any apologies then,” she admitted. “I was still mortified, and Eden was spitting mad, too. I was so afraid she was going bash you over the head with a vase that I just wanted to get her out of there.”

A fleeting smile touched his lips. “I have a vivid memory of that encounter. There are few things more terrifying than your sister in full rage.”

“I know. It’s splendid, isn’t it?”

One of Will’s eyebrows moved in a skeptical lift, but he didn’t contradict her.

“So, what’s changed?” he asked a moment later. “Why are you able to hear my apology now?”

Evie stared down at her clasped hands, sensibly gloved in plain tan. She knew the answer to his question. What had changed was meeting Michael. His friendship and admiration had done so much to restore her confidence, and their work at St. Margaret’s had helped her to realize she’d wasted too much time grieving over her first, foolish love.

But that felt much too private to explain to Will.

“I grew up, I suppose,” she said vaguely. “And it seemed silly to fret so much about a kiss, especially one that was clearly so, er, distasteful for you.”

Now it did seem silly, but at the time she’d been devastated. Aside from everything else, she must have been very bad at kissing, although she’d certainly enjoyed it. Will, however, had fled as if all the hounds of hell were hot on his trail.

He shot her an incredulous glance. “Evie, it was a splendid kiss, which was one of the reasons why I stopped.”

She went stiff as a fencepost as they wheeled through the village of Barrington. Though her gaze took in the verdant green and the quaint Elizabethan buildings, her brain was fixated on trying to understand his shocking words.

“That makes no sense,” she managed.

“It makes perfect sense,” he retorted. “Good God, you were barely seventeen and entirely innocent. I had no business taking advantage of you or our friendship.”

“If memory serves, I believe I was the one taking advantage of you.”

That surprised a snort of laughter out of him. “I suppose that’s true. Still, I had no business responding the way I did.”

“I don’t know,” she mused. “I thought it was all rather lovely.”

He met that remark with steadfast silence, concentrating on guiding his horses through the turn onto the long road that climbed the gentle hill to the abbey ruins.

“In any event,” he said once he’d sorted the turn, “I was mortally embarrassed by my shabby behavior. I found it impossible to discuss it with you. After all, you were my dearest friend. It was a shock that I could think of you in…well, in that way.”

And there it was—the depressing confirmation that Will had never loved her in the way she had loved him.

“I must say, though, that I did think about that kiss many times over the years,” he said with a self-satisfied grin. “I’m exceedingly fond of that memory, Evie.”

Now it was her turn to stare incredulously at him. “Then why did you never say anything to me?"

Day Three of the cover reveal and contest for HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING FOR A ROYAL SPY!

Thanks for joining me for Day 3 of the cover reveal for the third book in my Renegade Royals historical romance series. Here's today's image!

It's really starting to come together, isn't it? Can you get a sense of the setting?

And I promised you another excerpt from the first meet scene between my hero and heroine, Captain Will Endicott and Miss Evie Whitney:

While her sister greeted the new arrivals with her usual panache, Evie could only stand there, fighting the impulse to clench her fists into her skirts. She’d never been more grateful for her sister’s skillful managing of an awkward situation.

Staring helplessly at Will as he responded to Eden’s greeting, Evie took in his tall physique and handsome features. She’d seen him a few years ago at a military review in London that her mother had insisted they attend, but he’d been several hundred feet away from where she stood, mounted on horseback. Now, at close quarters, she had no choice but to brace herself against the shock of his overwhelming physical presence.

He was no longer the lanky, eighteen year old boy of long-cherished memories. He was very much a man, with broad shoulders showcased by his close-fitting coat and long, muscular legs sheathed in breeches and riding boots. But his face had changed perhaps even more than his body. Those extraordinary pale blue eyes of his, so like a wolf’s and startling against his tanned complexion, had naturally remained the same. But a hardened maturity had replaced their youthful gleam. His features were lean, the cheekbones and jaw hard-cut and formidably masculine. His expressive mouth was now bracketed with grooves, and faint lines extended from the corners of his eyes. Some would call them laugh lines, but she suspected he’d garnered them from squinting in the harsh sunlight of Spain. Besides, he didn’t look like he laughed much these days, and after what he must have seen in war, she couldn’t blame him. She could only stare at him and wonder at the changes to the boy she’d once loved.

Eden forestalled Will’s somewhat labored greetings by throwing her arms around his neck and depositing a swift kiss on his cheek. “Oh, never mind that. It’s splendid to see you, Wolf. We were all quite worried about you and our other friends after Waterloo, but you seem perfectly fit.”

Will gave Eden a sheepish smile, obviously startled by her enthusiastic greeting. “Er, it’s wonderful to see you too, Eden. And, yes, I’m fine.”

Then he turned to Evie, his smile turning cautious, almost as if he expected that she too would throw herself into his arms. “Evie, it’s splendid to see you again,” he said rather formally. “You’re looking well.”

That was patently untrue. Evie knew her face must be flushed an unattractive red from a combination of heat and nerves, and her unruly hair was no doubt curling damply around her face. Never had she felt more awkward and graceless, and she wanted to bash Will over the head for putting her in this position.

“What are you doing here?” she blurted out. “Did my mother invite you?”

It would be just like Mamma to forget to tell her something so important.

Will snorted. “Not bloody likely. She looked like she’d swallowed a lemon when she caught sight of me in the entrance hall. Clearly, her feelings for me haven’t changed.”

As you can see, things are going to be a little awkward for Will and Evie--after all, there's a lot of history between them! But Will has a plan to get Evie to forgive him, whether she wants to or not.

Please join me tomorrow for the full reveal of this truly gorgeous cover. And if you haven't already, please pop over to my website to enter my latest contest. It's a really good one, with signed copies of my books and a beautiful set of handmade gift cards.

Day Two of the cover reveal and contest for HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING FOR A ROYAL SPY!!

Welcome to the second day of my cover reveal for book three in The Renegade Royals Series, HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING FOR A ROYAL SPY. Yesterday, I posted the first image leading up to the big reveal on Friday.

And here's today's image!

Can you tell what the hero is wearing?

I also promised you an exclusive excerpt from the book - the first I've posted anywhere!

Evie Whitney, my heroine, is seeing her former childhood sweetheart for the first time after their falling-out several years ago. Will Endicott is returning home from his service in the British Army, where he was a soldier and intelligence officer:

Evie retrieved her bonnet from under the table. Her mother would scold if she saw her bareheaded outdoors, but the day was warm and fine and she liked the feel of the breeze on the back of her neck. Plopping the hat on her head, she turned to see her twin peering toward the house.

And felt as if the earth had just dropped away beneath her feet.

“Someone’s coming,” Eden said, “but I can’t make out who it is, confound it.”

Evie struggled to form the impossible words. “It’s…it’s Will. Endicott.”

Her twin’s mouth dropped open. “Wolf? Are you sure?”

“Of course I’m sure.” Evie blinked several times, as if that would somehow make Will disappear. “Do you think I could ever forget what he looks like?”

“Here, hand me your spectacles,” Eden said. Before Evie could answer, she snatched them from her nose and held them before her eyes. Then she let out a low whistle. “Well, I’ll be damned. It is Wolf Endicott. But who’s that delicious looking fellow he’s got with him?”

Evie retrieved her spectacles. “I don’t know and I don’t care. What I do want to know is what that…that…”

Words often failed her, but never more so than today.

“Bounder? Poltroon?” Eden helpfully supplied.

Evie could only give her head a despairing shake in response.

At one time, Will Endicott had meant the world to her. She’d told him all the secrets of her soul and had adored him with the fervent passion that only a young girl could feel for her first love. And she’d thought Will felt the same way, equally devoted to her and equally determined that they’d grow up and grow old together.

What a silly little fool she’d been. And what made it worse was that she really couldn’t hold it against him. After all, they’d both been so young. Will had gone on to other things, of course, as had she—eventually. It was foolish to harbor resentment and anger, especially after so many years.

But as she watched him stride across the wide expanse of lush, green lawn, Evie realized how unprepared she was to see him again, as if she were still that wounded girl of sixteen.

“What in God’s name can he be doing here?” she said.

“I expect he’s come to see you,” her twin answered.

“But why now? He hasn’t seen any of us in years.”

I'll continue with this excerpt tomorrow, along with another cover image, so I hope you'll join me! And please check out my website to enter the special contest I'm running along with the reveal. I'm giving away a great prize! You can enter the contest here:

HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING FOR A ROYAL SPY Cover Reveal & Contest: Day One!!

This Friday, I'll be doing an exclusive cover reveal here on goodreads for HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING FOR A ROYAL SPY, the next book in my historical romance series, The Renegade Royals. This series features heroes who are the illegitimate sons of England's royal princes. HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING is book three, and I really had fun bringing back some of my earlier characters and also introducing new ones.

And the cover is to die for!

Just for fun, I'm going to tease you all week with a gradual reveal until Friday, when I unveil the full cover. It's a bit of a guessing game, and I hope you enjoy trying to figure out the different elements in the image.

Without further ado, here's part one of the reveal.

It's a jumble, but can you tell if it's a clinch cover or not?

And here's the book blurb:

"Whether as spies or lovers, the Renegade Royals—illegitimate sons of England’s Royal Princes—are bold, skillful, and a force to be reckoned with…

A war hero returned from Waterloo should be able to indulge in a bit of bad behavior. Instead, Captain William Endicott is summoned by his father, the Duke of York, to investigate an assassination plot. The unlikely suspect: William’s former sweetheart. Will can’t believe that innocent Evie Whitney could be mixed up in anything so nefarious. Then again, almost everything about Evie has changed—except for his body’s instinctive response to hers…

Just as Evie’s life is finally coming together, Will saunters back into it. Should she slap him—or seduce him? Even as she tries to decide, scandal pushes her toward marriage with a man she can neither trust nor resist—and into the heart of a deadly conspiracy…"

To celebrate the cover reveal, I'm running a contest on my website, which includes a book giveaway and a really lovely prize. Please stop by my contest page to check it out and to enter:

http://www.vanessakellyauthor.com/con...

And I'd be thrilled if you added HOW TO PLAN A WEDDING FOR A ROYAL SPY to your goodreads To Read list.

Hope to see you tomorrow for Day Two of the big reveal. I'll be posting another image and also a short excerpt from the book!
