Leadership History Lesson for July 21st

Today is actor and comedian Don Knotts birthday. Why is he considered an honorable leader? Born the youngest of four brothers in 1924 when his mother was 40 years old, he experienced challenges early in life because his father suffered with schizophrenia and alcoholism, sometimes terrorizing him with a knife, causing him to turn inward at an early age. His father died of pneumonia when Knotts was 13.

Knotts went on to enlist in the United States Army, serve in World War II, and earn a bachelor’s degree in education with a minor in speech. May we all have the diligence and tenacity (and fun) to overcome our own challenges!

Hi Jane! Its me, Tarzan!

Hi Jane! Its me, Tarzan! were the first words Vietnam POW Smitty Harris said, on a trans-Pacific phone call to his wife, Louise, in their first conversation after eight years apart. Smittys exclamation reconnected them instantly. Pet names are in jokes through which couples share a humorous lightness and deep connection.

Not Getting the Message? Here are 4 Levels of Clarity to Help

Is Your Team Not Getting the Message? Here are 4 Levels of Clarity to Help – Good communications require a thoughtful approach in how to share the goals, assignments, guidelines, and expectations.

100,000-Foot Level – The reality is that most of us are not naturally wired to think through how to clarify so that others can understand the missions, vision, values (and boundaries), strategies, and decisions. Its like the big picture.50,000-Foot Level – Leaders need to reflect and share standards for the industry, the profession, and the organization. Again, the more clarity you have, the more people are aligned as a successful team.25,000-Foot Level Leaders share with the organization his or her operating preferences and cultural expectations. As I mentioned in the Engage with Honor book, I had eight items that I shared with my team every year that were my way of operating, more specifically- what was okay and not okay with me.15-, 10-, 5000-foot Levels – Its about very tactical day-to-day expectationswhat needs to be accomplished, under what conditions, who is responsible for what and the potential consequences. This is about communicating your desired outcomes. Leaders must consider who has the best talents for different roles and not assign a task or role to someone who does not have the talents that are needed to successfully execute the task.

Clarify then Over-Communicate

Once you have clarified your thinking and focus and have a good picture of the mission, vision, values, and strategy, and have made decisions, you must over-communicate the message to your people so they can grasp what you are expecting from them.

Leadership History Lesson for July 14th

On this day in leadership history in 1911, Harry N. Atwood landed an airplane on the lawn of the White House to accept an award from U.S. President William Taft. He flew this record-breaking 576-mile trip from Boston within three months of his first flying lesson.

Whats the leadership lesson? If you have an important initiative that needs some visibility, what kind of splash can you make to communicate it to others? Go over the top to fulfill your purpose!

Do you believe in Fate?

Beautiful Mackinac Island Speaking Event

I was so fortunate to speak to the board officers and their wives at the Corporate Aircraft Association (CAA) on beautiful Mackinac Island, Michigan. All of the guys are longtime corporate pilots and their wives were a sweet and special group.

We had a wonderful sunset cruise under the Mackinac Bridge connecting the Lower Peninsula of Michigan to the Upper Peninsula and the line between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. Grateful for these men and women as they lead with honor!
