On This Day in Leadership History for April 9, 2017
On this day in leadership history in 1992, John Major elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after his Conservative Party wins the most votes in British electoral history. Five years later, Major went on to lose the 1997 general election in one of the largest electoral defeats since the Great Reform Act of 1832.
What’s the leadership lesson? If you choose lead with honor, the heights and depths of leadership are more manageable.

560th Fighter Squadron Celebration Last Week – Watch the Clip
Please watch the great celebration clip below. This is where I re-qualified after the war and later was privileged to command this squadron from 1980-1982. The ceremony at the “missing man” monument to remember those who did not come home was highlighted by a T-34 flyby with former POW cellmate General Chuck Boyd as number three. You will see his pullup over the monument to highlight our missing that we never forget.
Tom Brokaw, a friend of Gen. Boyd was at the squadron earlier to interview several POWs as part of an upcoming documentary on former POWs and their return to duty after the way. Please share with others – thank you

A Leadership FAQ on Micro-Managing Bosses
A Leadership FAQ from Lee’s book, Engage with Honor –
Question: “My boss has his own, negative micro-managing version of accountability. How can I change it to a positive one?”
Lee’s Answer: “Recognize that this style is likely anchored in fear or old habits based on what he learned from his boss in his formative years. As in the previous question, the best way to help your manager is through your relationship capital and your professional performance. Skeptical leaders are logical, and with a proven track record, you can build trust and increase your leverage. Ask him to take a risk on you by giving you some latitude to operate more freely. Then execute and exceed his expectation. Through solid performance and good communications, it’s likely that you can build a trusted relationship that will result in more empowerment, though you may have to ask for it.”

Ralph de la Vega and His Reflections on the Power of Teams
In this insightful article from Ralph de la Vega, newly retired former Vice Chairman of AT&T, Inc. (and the Foreword author for Lee Ellis’ latest book, Engage with Honor), he shares how the power of teamwork was a critical element in his 42-year telecommunications career as he went from from an entry-level, assistant manager’s job in Southern Bell’s engineering department in Plantation, Florida, to his final job as vice chairman of AT&T.

Avoiding the Narcissist Trap – How to Maximize your Strengths and Minimize Your Struggles
Concerned about becoming a narcissist (would you even notice haha)? Or are you concerned about how to handle one in your life and work? Consider some of these leadership strengths and what happens when they get too strong –
– Confident – Self-centered, talk mainly about their agenda, discount others
– Decisive – Opinionated–sometimes wrong but never in doubt
– Initiating – Too aggressive to get what they want
– Outgoing – Need to be the center of attention
– Accurate React strongly to constructive feedback
– Take charge – Controlling, believing that they are smarter, superior
– Strategic – Manipulative of others to get what they want
– Logical and Objective – Insensitive to the feelings and needs of others
– Visionary – Blame others when something goes wrong
Now if you have a strong, confident personality, you may lack self-awareness of these unbalanced traits when you look in the mirror, but others notice them. To avoid acquiring a full-blown case of NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder), evaluate how many of these struggles show up in your thoughts and behavior and imagine how others experience you.
Here are three healthy ways to maximize your strengths and minimize your struggles:
Gain more self-awareness of how others see you. What traits can you do more or less of to be more effective?
If you’re humble and reticent –
– Believe in yourself and the value you bring to the table and assert yourself into situations.
– Speak up to share your insights and ideas. Challenge issues when you disagree.
– Stretch and take on high profile challenges that match your natural talents.
If you naturally have a strong ego –
– Solicit input and practice active listening.
– Set aside your agenda and become more aware of the other person’s feelings and your own feelings in the moment.
– Consider how you can affirm, encourage, and support others.
Please share your comments too – we’d like to hear from you in this post. Also, read the entire article on this topic.

On This Day in Leadership History for April 2, 2017
On this day in leadership history in 1931, a teenage girl, Jackie Mitchell, strikes out Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig in an exhibition game in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A few days after Mitchell struck out Ruth and Gehrig, baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis voided her contract and declared women unfit to play baseball as the game was “too strenuous.”
What’s the leadership lesson? A contract didn’t void her talent—she kept on enjoying the sport. As a leader, you can keep going too—use your talent for good today.
