On This Day in Leadership History, September 3rd

On this day in leadership history in 1954, “The Lone Ranger” was heard on radio for the final time after 2,956 episodes over a period of 21 years. As generally depicted, the Lone Ranger conducted himself with a strict moral code that included the following beliefs:

That to have a friend, a man must be one.
That all men are created equal and that everyone has within himself the power to make this a better world.
That God put the firewood there, but that every man must gather and light it himself.
In being prepared physically, mentally, and morally to fight when necessary for what is right.
That a man should make the most of what equipment he has.
That ‘this government of the people, by the people, and for the people’ shall live always.
That men should live by the rule of what is best for the greatest number.
That sooner or later…somewhere…somehow…we must settle with the world and make payment for what we have taken.
That all things change but truth, and that truth alone, lives on forever.
In my Creator, my country, my fellow man.

Here’s a sample program from 1937 below…

New Survey: Millennials Learn More from Technology Than from People

These new statistics from Growing Leaders seem startling –

70% of U.S. adults say children growing up today will not be ready for adult life (i.e., life after graduation from school).
2 in 3 U.S. adults (66%) say that when they were in their teens, they had an older adult (other than a parent) who positively impacted their life. Baby Boomers age 65+ (59%) are significantly less likely to agree with this than all other age groups, but particularly Millennials age 18-34 (71%).
Nearly 3 in 5 U.S. adults (58%) say they learn more information from technology than from people. Millennials age 18-34 (69%) are significantly more likely to agree with this than those ages 45+ (50%).

This article interprets what these numbers seem to be telling us – please read and share how leaders today could help this trend –

On This Day in Leadership History, August 27th

On this day in leadership history in 2001, work began on the future site of a World War II memorial on the U.S. capital’s historic national Mall. The site is between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial and was completed in 2004.

What’s the leadership lesson? Like the “greatest generation”, remember and memorialize the special people and leaders that helped get you where you are today.

Motivation vs Discipline – Do you agree? See Inside

A recent opinion we read on the topic of motivation vs discipline – do you agree? –

“Motivation is a fickle and unreliable little state that isn’t worth your time. Better to cultivate discipline than to rely on motivation. Force yourself to do things, to get out of bed, to go the gym, to work harder and smarter; force yourself to do stuff when you don’t feel like doing anything. Motivation is fleeting, and it’s easy to rely on because it requires no concentrated effort to get. Motivation comes to you, you don’t even have to chase after it. Discipline is reliable; motivation is momentary. The real question isn’t how to keep yourself motivated; it’s how to train yourself to work without it.”
