The Twisted Book of Shadows wins the Shirley Jackson Award
Much to my delight and surprise (There was STIFF competition), the Twisted Book of Shadows won the 2019 Shirley Jackson Award for outstanding achievement in the literature of suspense, horror and the dark fantastic.
I simply cannot put into words how much this means to me, and I will now blatantly quote my co-editor Christopher Golden from his Facebook post:
"I'm absolutely thrilled to learn that The Twisted Book of Shadows has won the Shirley Jackson Award. It means the world to me that this book, and these authors, has received this honor. While I'm extremely grateful to publisher John M. McIlveen, co-editor James A. Moore, coordinator Matt Bechtel, and editorial committee including Linda D Addison, Rachel Autumn Deering, Lee Thomas, Nadia Bulkin, and KL Pereira (as well as to every person who supported our gofundme with a donation), I want to point your attention to the contributors. We sifted through 700 stories to find extraordinary stories. I'm so damned proud to be associated with the authors and the stories in this book, so congratulations to the authors. If you haven't read the stories yet, you owe it to yourselves to do so.

It's an honor. That's all I can say.

Back in the Saddle Again...
Charles R. Rutledge and yours truly are at it again. Sort of. We've told several stories revolving around Griffin & Price, the private investigator and sheriff of Wellman County, who keep getting themselves into supernatural troubles. We started with BLIND SHADOWS, (we fixed the typos, honest!) Moved on to CONGREGATIONS OF THE DEAD and then slid into A HELL WITHIN. There's even been a novella, CALL UP THE DEAD, included in one of the SNAFU anthologies by Geoff Brown. We visit Wellman a goodly amount is my point.
So we're visiting again. Currently, we're writing THE TOURIST'S GUIDE TO HAUNTED WELLMAN. It's NOT a Griffin & Price novel, though you can expect cameos. It's a story of what happens when things go very very wrong for some amateur parapsychologists. I won't say more than that right now, except to add that other recurring characters from yours truly and Charles will be showing up to handle the events.
We're around a fifth of the way through so far and plugging away.
Expect bloodshed. Heh heh heh.
Or, as Charles said, "Make no mistake, this is a horror novel."

Well, that was awkward.
I managed to sign myself off of Genrefied and onto an old Blogspot account from 2009. Happily, someone wiser than me pointed out the likely problem and was completely correct in her assumptions.
So I'm back after a rather long hiatus.
The latest news? Currently, after much radiation and chemotherapy, I am cancer-free. I am pleased and currently, I am recovering. It has not been an easy road.
I was surfing around earlier today, recovering from a couple of pages of writing and considering what to say next, when I ran across a negative review on Amazon. Weird, I know but there it was a one sta review written about somebody other than me. I looked at it for several seconds, wondering how I managed to get back to my own reviews, and then read it carefully.
Sure enough, it's a different James.
have you noticed how many one-star reviews are, well, nitpicky in the extreme? I mean on a level that is absolutely silly.
the biggest complaints seem to be that the same phrase was used more than once (in 85,000 plus words, it can happen) and that the author didn't do all that could be done with the setup.
Yeah. I can say that later part about damned near every book I've ever read. Not everyone is going to see a situation the same way that I do. Or that you do. Or that anyone does. It's the nature of the beast.
It's just that the truly negative reviews don't even try to understand that. Instead of understanding something they condescend it. When you resort to a one sentence review and it's negative you aren't even trying any longer. I can and will ignore your reviews, especially if you do the same with almost everything you review. (It sin;t that's hard to check, folks, honestly.)
Okay, that's my rant for today.
I'm back to work on THE GODLESS, book five of the Seven Forges series.
Keep smilim=ng,
Jim

The first review is up for THE TWISTED BOOK OF SHADOWS, and I am pleased.
You can find it here! With thanks to Michael Patrick Hicks!
"While the above-mentioned were the standout entries, the rest were pretty damn good on their own, too. Taken on the whole, The Twisted Book of Shadows was a very strong anthology, and I greatly appreciated the editors’ focus on introducing readers to potentially new talent and underrepresented writers. Golden, Moore, and McIlveen went above and beyond in their approach to soliciting and selecting the stories included here, but it’s hard work that fully paid off. It’s also a great lesson for other editors and publishers to learn from, and I do hope we see more anthologies like this hitting the market in the coming years."
