Spirit Sunday * Going green

Going green has a lot of meanings (hope you tried the kale chips yesterday!) and today we're thinking about the upcoming growing season.

There's something wonderful about getting produce – even if it's just herbs – from your own garden. Choose something to grow in your yard, or on your patio or deck, or on your windowsill this summer. If you're unsure about what will grow in your area, go to a garden center and talk to the experts there (we've had much better luck with this in locally owned ...

Go Green!

We're ready to start thinking about St. Patrick's Day (yes, already). Maybe it's all the snow that's still on the ground, or even still falling in some places. Maybe it's the days getting just enough longer to notice the sunrise each morning. Maybe it's a need for a rainbow and a pot of gold. But we're thinking GREEN.

And today, that means the king of green vegetables – kale.

Here's an unusual snack that is kid-tested (and kid-approved). Yes, really – by middle school students even. Kale ...

Fitness Friday * Bottoms up!

Do you want a better looking behind? Start working on your rear view now and you'll have great buns for spring and summer.

Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor, arms at your sides.

Lift your booty 3 to 6 inches off the floor by tilting your pelvis up, squeezing your glutes (buttocks), and tightening your abdominals (stomach). Do the movement slowly and with control, focusing on the muscles.

Hold that position for a few seconds, and then slowly lower down...

Midwinter refresh

It's been a long winter! There's been snow everywhere, even in the Deep South. It's been cold and dry, it's been cold and wet. Make yourself feel better with midwinter home spa day.

There a few themes for a home spa day – hydration, exfoliation, and relaxation. Of course you can add other things, like a mani-pedi, or experimenting with your makeup, or deep conditioning your hair. We're going to stick with the basics, so you can fit this midwinter refresh into a normal day (not an...

Featured recipe from Marilu's table * Crunchy crisps

Make this dessert when you need something simple and sweet – and automatically portion-controlled. Put them in school lunches (or your own brown bag lunch), or toss a few in a small container when you'll be out running errands all day. You'll be able to skip the junk food at the checkout counter or food court if you have something healthy to snack on.

Crunchy Crisps

Yellow * 16 pieces

1/2 cup natural chunky peanut butter (or any thick nut butter)
1/2 cup honey, maple syrup, or...

Help improve school lunches

We learned a great way to help improve our children's school lunches yesterday – while we were in chat with Dr. Neal Barnard and Marilu. Here's what Dr. Barnard said.

The most amazing thing is that Congress is now considering vegetarian and vegan options for children in school. It would make kids so much healthier.

Please call Congress at 202-224-3121, and tell them your city, and they'll put you through to your representative's office. Ask your representative to support the new bill...
