Gideon Burrows is an award winning author of novels and non-fiction books that aim to make you uncomfortable, allow you recover, and then make you feel completely refreshed.

Or else guilty. Or exhilarated. Or maybe a combination of these things.

Like taking a cold shower.

His near future novels, including Future Shop and Portico, tackle the challenging world of the near future: how social media, the metaverse, virtual reality, multi-player games and more may be sending us to hell. You'll never let your kids on the internet again.

I think this comes with time, when you've been writing a while and see it as a job rather than a hobby, you don't tend to get so blocked.

I absolutely insist on writing 2,000 words every working day, even if it's 2,00 words I know is unlikely to be used in the book I'm writing.

And if I don't - well, I can't have my coffee, take a leisurely break to chat to my wife, do emails or anything. It's enough impetus to keep going.

I use a writing programme called Scrivener which even 'dings' when that 2,000 words is written. If it's a good day, I don't even notice the 'ding' as I'm ploughing through.(less)

I got to meet some amazing characters, eat some fantastic food, and mostly wrote the book on the way home on the train. That's some job!(less)

Sex and the school-gate mum

It’s an old joke, but one I still hear occasionally when men find out I do half the childcare in our family: “Are any of the mums at the school hot?”

When my two were very small and I used to go to new baby clubs, I’d be asked if I got to see a lot of boobs.

Mostly I’d just laugh this stuff off. Sometimes, I’d even laugh along with it. But this week, I got to feel first hand how difficult it is to s Read more of this blog post »
