Nikki Tate was born in Birmingham, England, but spent her childhood roaming the globe. In Australia, Nikki battled a tarantula, in Banff she was chased by a mother black bear, and in Ontario she wrestled with a Canada goose.

Despite the fact that she has been kicked, bitten, stung, pecked, and sprayed, she has never been able to resist injured, lost, or lonely-looking animals. Over the years, her menagerie has included horses, dogs, cats, birds, snakes, squirrels, rabbits, rats, gerbils, spiders, crayfish, hamsters, and a pond full of koi fish. These critters and their antics often find their way into her stories. Not surprisingly, Nikki's favourite book when she was little was Black Beauty, though she also loved The Lion, The Witch, and The

Plain and simple. So, it was kind of a no-brainer to write an adventure novel for teens set on the side of a mountain. I am also often terrified when I climb - it goes against every ounce of good sense a body possesses to be hanging around waaaaaaaaaaay up there somewhere. Accidents can and do happen - make a mistake when you're climbing and the consequences can be devastating. And yet, back to the start of this answer, I love climbing. I love the places the sport takes me and the way I have to stay fit and strong to be able to climb safely and well. The social aspects of climbing (the climbing tribe is a pretty cool group, very welcoming and supportive and full of free-spirited adventurous types) add a delightful extra dimension, one I did not expect when I began to climb a lot. Through my climbing I've made some great friends - every time we head out it seems we meet someone else who I would happily add to my circle .

"Deadpoint" is scheduled to come out in January, 2017 and the novel explores a lot of these themes; the natural beauty of wild climbing areas, friendships, danger, and fear. Like me, the main character experiences moments of panic while on the wall but she, too, finds the powerful draw of the climb more than compensates for those moments of misery on the wall. (less)

[image error]The Baths on Virgin Gorda in the BVI [Nikki Tate]

Several years ago now (how time flies!), I joined my family down in the Virgin Islands for a sailing trip. I have been meaning to write about that in more detail ever since, but haven’t got around to it — until now!

Here’s a link to a post I wrote over on Medium (which is where I’m doing most of my blogging these days). It’s about a rath
