How The Grapes of Wrath inspired YA Fantasy
Hey, everyone! First blog post! Yay!
And already, I have bombarded you with exclamation marks. What a great way to start things off :)
For real, though, hi there! My name's Areeb Mahmood, and I'm a 16-year-old writer in the genre of YA Fantasy. Here, I'll be listing why The Grapes of Wrath, a realistic novel about a family struggling to find a home in the Depression, is the biggest inspiration for my novel A Sky of Flowers.
Seems like a random choice, given that I'm writing YA Fantasy. Well, aside from being an amazing book, The Grapes of Wrath has a really unique style and structure, using intercalary chapters for every odd number. Something about the concept of telling a completely random side story in the middle of the plot just felt so—right to me.
The intercalary chapters are some of the greatest breakings of traditional writing norms I've ever seen. And I've used them in my novel, too, but a bit differently. While author John Steinbeck uses random stories at consistent intervals, I used one connected story at inconsistent intervals. I felt like this played better into my book's themes of the unpredictability of life, and the single connected story worked better for me to convey my other themes.
Anddd that's a wrap on my first blog post. Let me know how this was, I'm new to this ;-;
