Amazon Review for TOP TIPS FOR HOW TO PUBLISH YOUR BOOK IN THE AGE OF KINDLE
When Mary Elliott Raynor, fellow member of Military Writers Society of America, told me she was thinking about publishing her memoir, I offered her a review copy of my newest TOP TIPS ebook — TOP TIPS FOR HOW TO PUBLISH YOUR BOOK IN THE AGE OF KINDLE.
Mary has just written a review of the ebook on Amazon, and I have asked her permission to reprint the review here:
I was impressed with this book by Phyllis Zimbler Miller. It is a very concise book, written not to overwhelm the reader. It does not take long to read, because it gets to the good stuff right away without wasting space with boring irrelevant information. It is well set up with chapters written in logical sequence that are very easy to read and understand.
This book tells the beginning writer everything they need to know about converting their book into an e-book in PDF formula, along with uploading, coding, and marketing it, as well as giving advice about royalties and what to do about negative reviews — action steps that the author assures you can be done immediately.
Phyllis Zimbler Miller has quite a bit of experience publishing books in the traditional as well as the e-book method. I have read several of her books (MRS. LIEUTENANT, LT. COMMANDER MOLLIE SANDERS, and CIA FALL GUY). She is a fantastic writer and I am very enthusiastic about her books (no, I do not know her personally).
In this how-to book, Phyllis Zimbler Miller offers us advice based upon her own experience and upon her own mistakes, like how to choose a title and cover, and how to stay in control of your own e-book. She also gives reasons why the writer should use certain companies to convert and market their e-books (no, she does not own stock in these companies).
At the end of the book is a concise guide which is necessary in our day and age on how to use good grammar.
I don’t think you will waste your money buying this book if you are interested in getting started writing and publishing.
I found it very helpful because it gave me hope and [I] gave it 5 stars!

FREE Book Promotion Opportunity: Ask David
When @free_book_promo followed me on Twitter, of course I checked the Twitter bio to see what this was about. And I immediately clicked through to the link in the bio (see at end of post).
Although at first I wondered what was “in it” for the Ask David site owner if this opportunity was free, I decided to submit one of my books and see what I thought.
I have now submitted my novel MRS. LIEUTENANT, and I so far like what I have discovered.
Here is just some of the information from the site:
askDavid.com has a Google PageRank of 5 (PR5) (higher is better) that means that this site is considered of high importance by search engines.
askDavid.com has an Alexa Rank of 121,269 (lower is better) that means that this site gets a lot of visitors – great for book publicity.
We are an Amazon Associate. If a visitor of our site follows our link to your book’s Amazon page and buys your book we receive a small commission paid by Amazon. Please note that this does not take away from your royalties! This business model enables us to provide our service to you for free and guarantees you that we do our best in promoting your books since we won’t get paid if we don’t sell your books.
This last information blurb does explain what is “in it” for this site.
I particularly appreciate the kind of information that one can include for a submitted book — much more complete than what one can currently submit for a book on Amazon. And, yes, my ebooks can continue to be sold only on Kindle per my choice of using the KDP Select option.
(One thing I need to ask about: The words “online marketing” in my novel’s description are linked to another book on the site that is about online marketing. While I would normally be fine with this, because I have my own online marketing books on Amazon, I will be submitting those to this site and requesting that, if possible, my books be linked to instead of the current book.)
Click here to look at the MRS. LIEUTENANT page on this site.
Now click here to read the Ask David site information carefully. Then submit your books, and share with your online connections.

Changing a Book Cover on a Kindle Ebook
As some of you may know, thanks to encouragement from Anthony Wessel of Digital Book Today, my business partner Yael K. Miller designed a new cover for the thriller LT. COMMANDER MOLLIE SANDERS that I wrote with my husband.
Then Anthony ran a poll of the two covers on DBT’s daily list of the top 100 free books in Kindle. When the poll was closed at 122 votes, the results (rounded) were 50% in favor of the new cover, 12.5% in favor of the old cover, and 12.5 chose “neither.”
Here is probably the major problem with any such poll:
There is no way of knowing whether the people who voted are thriller readers. After all, the new cover is supposed to appeal to this target. (And Yael and I studied the covers of the successful thrillers on Amazon before coming up with the new cover.)
Although Anthony pointed out that the “neither” category was relatively high, I decided to go with the NEW cover for now and see what develops.
Now starts more work.
Uploading the new cover on Amazon to the Kindle version was a few clicks, although it appeared that the upload did not work because the old photo remained on display. Eventually, though, the new cover appeared on the Amazon sales page.
BUT …. an Amazon Author Central rep pointed out to me that the cover inside the “Search Inside the Book” feature for the Kindle ebook had not changed. She was unable to help with this issue and told me to contact KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing).
Here is the answer I got from KDP, which I am sharing to help other authors:
I did a test download of the Kindle sample to my Kindle and saw the new cover there. Since that is the case, I have just recreated the SITB file which should update with the new cover in a couple hours.
And when I checked, the new cover was now being displayed inside the “Search Inside the Book” feature.
Now I am going to remind myself — and others — where an old cover has to be switched out for a new cover. Depending on when you check out the links on this list, you may still see the old cover:
Author website slidedeck (click on LT. COMMANDER MOLLIE SANDERS book title at http://www.phylliszimblermiller.com/phyllis-fiction-books-ebooks/) and book page at www.phylliszimblermiller.com/mollie-sanders/
Author Facebook Page cover image at www.facebook.com/phylliszimblermillerauthor — needs to be done
“My Books and Ebooks” Pinterest board at http://pinterest.com/zimblermiller/my-books-and-ebooks/ — needs to be done
Plus numerous other sites that I will have to locate and make the switch
Do I think this effort of changing to a new book cover is worth it?
I may never know. But as with everything in book marketing, authors have to be flexible — open to considering different ways of promoting their books.
And here is a very important warning for all authors:
Remember that anyone can make changes to your book’s listing on Shelfari (now owned by Amazon). Make sure you choose the option to get notified when someone updates the info for your book.
In my own case, I discovered that someone gave away a plot twist in my novel MRS. LIEUTENANT when adding info about a minor character. I had to delete that info in order to preserve the plot twist.

Ongoing Saga of Amazon Book Reviews
You may have read my post here “Oh, Dear, the Case of the Fake Book Reviews.”
In a nutshell, the case is of fake reviews on Amazon, including from authors dissing other authors’ books.
I believe I may have received such a review:
My thriller LT. COMMANDER MOLLIE SANDERS (written with my husband Mitchell R. Miller, a member of the U.S. Naval Institute) got a mean one-star review. While anyone cannot like the book, the review was so nasty that I checked the reviewer’s other reviews.
From what I could tell, every book review he has done is a mean one-star review (he uses numerous nasty words). But he gives lots of stars to products he reviews!
Because this review is nasty and not offensive, I did not feel I could “report abuse” to Amazon.
What I did do was go on the StooshPR Facebook group I recently joined and asked that members of the group click on the “not helpful” option next to the review. I did, of course, explain why I thought this request was justified.
Understanding the “helpful” and “not helpful” choices:
It is important that authors understand how Amazon appears to utilize these two choices. For illustration purposes I am going to use DREAMLESS, the second YA novel in the STARCROSSED trilogy by Josephine Angelini.
As of this writing, the book has 53 reviews with a 4.4 out of 5 rating. The breakdown is 29 five-star reviews, 19 four-star reviews, 3 three-star reviews, and 1 each of two- and one-star reviews.
I have read this novel two times, and I read the first novel in the series three times. I personally know we can disregard the 1 one-star and 1 two-star review as mean reviews.
Here is the interesting thing:
Of the three reviews on the book page that are displayed in their entirety — one is a four-star review and two are three-star reviews.
Given that 29 are five-star reviews and 19 are four-star reviews and only 3 are three-star reviews (out of 53), why would Amazon’s algorithms show 1 five-star and 2 three-star reviews in the main review section?
The only answer in my opinion seems to be the “helpful” and “not helpful” votes. And I suspect these results themselves are even more skewed BECAUSE, if the main reviews displayed are 1 five-star and 2 three-star reviews, isn’t it likely this will be a self-perpetrating cycle thanks to the “helpful” and “not helpful” votes?
As an attorney might say in court, “I rest my case.”
Unfortunately, there is not a lot that we authors can do about this EXCEPT:
When it is appropriate, do click “helpful” on good reviews for books you know to be good and “not helpful” for negative reviews.
And if you are so inclined, you might click NOT HELPFUL next to this nasty review for LT. COMMANDER MOLLIE SANDERS.
(As someone in the StooshPR Facebook group said, fiction is fictional. Ironically, I had just written a guest post about this — see “Fictional Characters Are Fictional.”)

Using Kindle to Promote: LOVE BUG LOVE by Bonnie Latino
The following is the conclusion of a tongue-in-cheek narrative nonfiction essay on the reproduction habits of insects. This end matter was written in the same “voice” as the article, which I have read and think is hilarious. (You can get it for 99 cents at http://amzn.to/O6PPkE)
The reason I am sharing it in a blog post here is that this ABOUT THE AUTHOR is such an excellent example of putting a nonfiction essay on Amazon’s Kindle in order to promote a full-length novel on Kindle:
Hey! Bonnie Bartel Latino thanks the reader kindly for making time to read about this fascinating, but maddening, aspect of life in the Deep South. A professional journalist, Bonnie is a former freelance columnist for Stars and Stripes newspaper in Europe. She is also a correspondent for the Mobile (AL) Press-Register Living Arts book page and writes for several other Alabama publications. She lives somewhere near the “Redneck Riviera” with her husband, retired Air Force Colonel Tom Latino and their baby Bichon, Sweetie Pie. The name is appropriate only when the little dog is fast asleep.
Follow Bonnie on social media at www.facebook.com/YourGiftToMe2012 and on Twitter — @BonnieBLatino.
If you enjoyed Bonnie’s sanitized analysis of courtship in the insect kingdom, she would greatly appreciate a brief review on Amazon. However! Should you have an opportunity for a little hokey-pokey of your own, just forget all after “Hey!”
But seriously, folks, if you like Bonnie’s way with words, please consider scampering over to Amazon.com and downloading a free sample of YOUR GIFT TO ME by Bonnie Bartel Latino and Bob Vale.
The military love story shares the same central, but subtle, theme of the healing powers of love and laughter to triumph over grief that was found in “Top Gun” and “Steel Magnolias.”
YOUR GIFT TO ME is available in paperback and eBook from Amazon. Readers enrolled in Amazon Prime with a Kindle may download the eBook free.
Wait — there’s more! While you’re over at Amazon anyway, please consider sampling two other military-themed novels written by former military spouses. Bonnie recommends THE FINAL SALUTE by Kathleen Rodgers and MRS. LIEUTENANT: A SHARON GOLD NOVEL by Phyllis Zimbler Miller.
All three books are experience-based fiction, and all provide peeks into a way of life impossible to comprehend unless you have lived it or have a family member who has served our country in uniform.
Thank you again for downloading and reading about LOVE BUG LOOOVE.
Kiss! Kiss!
Okay, do y’all (I’m pretending I’m Southern) see why I love Bonnie B. Latino so much? And check out her wonderful novel YOUR GIFT TO ME now at http://amzn.to/NUHtAc
P.S. I hope this inspires you to consider how you might use Kindle opportunities to promote your fiction and nonfiction. And if you need help doing this, check out my short ebooks:

Lessons Learned From KDP Select Free Days
This is the Facebook status photo I created with special software I previously bought. I used this status update the first of the two KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) free days for my fiction ebook LT. COMMANDER MOLLIE SANDER written with my husband.
While I loved the way the image stood out on a Facebook Page, I have no idea whether it was more successful than a regular update (with an Amazon link) in encouraging people to download MOLLIE SANDERS for free.
This is the status image I used the second of the free days. Again, whether this helped with downloads is unknown.
In fact, MOLLIE SANDERS had less downloads than CIA FALL GUY and quite a bit less than MRS. LIEUTENANT on their two KDP Select free days. But there are so many variables in how well a book does that it is very hard to write advice for other authors.
I will say that MRS. LIEUTENANT already had many more reviews than either CIA FALL GUY or MOLLIE SANDERS. Plus MOLLIE SANDERS turns out to be a controversial book — the portrayal of a strong fictional female character in a traditionally male role — and elicits reviews all over the place.
While I cannot promise you that this is true for everyone, I do think the more good reviews you have — and the better those reviews are — coupled with assertive promoting (notice I said assertive and NOT aggressive) by authors and their online colleagues are all very important factors in the success of a KDP Select promotion.
But here are two of the variables that could have influenced the downloads for MOLLIE SANDERS:
The first of the two days was Labor Day. I thought that might be a good choice with people not being at work. In retrospect, this may have been a mistake.
Because of the way that Amazon displays reviews on a book’s page (explained in detail in my ebook TOP TIPS FOR HOW TO MARKET YOUR BOOK ON AMAZON AND FACEBOOK), people who click they found a review helpful can strongly influence which reviews are the three main reviews shown on the page.
In other words, people who have NOT read the book can click they found a review helpful. The more people who click that a review is helpful appears to push a review “up” in the display.
Thus if there is a negative review, and many people who have NOT read the book click that the negative review is helpful, the more likely that review will be at the top of all reviews displayed on a book’s page.
And this happened to MOLLIE SANDERS on the second of the free days.
Now I advise people not to respond to negative reviews — and I did not respond to this review — but of course I highly disagree with what the person said. If a fictional male character had the skills that we gave LCDR Sanders, I doubt the person would have complained. But we gave these skills to a woman!
Okay, enough said. Except, as I replied to a question from a member of the LinkedIn Book Marketing group that I manage, an author is always at the mercy of bad reviews. It’s part of the life of an author.
On the other hand, I do want to thank two people who are supportive of authors and who helped get out the word about the free days for MOLLIE SANDERS:
Anthony Wessel of DigitalBookToday.com for including LCDR MOLLIE SANDERS in Digital Book Today’s “Top 100 Best Free Kindle Book List.” Check out the current list now at bit.ly/Top100ListDBT
Taylor Coil of Freebooksy.com for promoting LCRD MOLLIE SANDER’s free Kindle days.
And thank you to everyone who downloaded MOLLIE SANDERS on the KDP Select free days! I appreciate it!

LCDR MOLLIE SANDERS in Good Company With TREASURE ISLAND and THE ILIAD
This information is so funny that I had to share it:
At the moment, during late on the first of two free KDP Select days for the technothriller LT. COMMANDER MOLLIE SANDERS that I wrote with my husband — MOLLIE is #2 in Amazon Best Sellers in FREE Sea Adventure Fiction in the Kindle store.
Robert Louis Stevenson’s TREASURE ISLAND is in first place and Homer’s THE ILIAD is in third place. Mitch’s and my thriller is surrounded by Stevenson and Homer. What a hoot!
Yes, this ranking will not last long. But it certainly is a snapshot of the strange bedfellows that Amazon’s algorithms can create.
Actually, as LCDR Sanders is a modern-day U.S. Navy warrior, it seems rather fitting that she is included with the warriors of The Iliad.
And what is interesting about the reviews for this thriller, many of the pro and con reviews talk about the portrayal of a woman in a traditionally male role.
What sometimes seems to escape people reviewing the story is that LCDR Mollie Sanders is a FICTIONAL character. Just as we accept male action heroes, we should be able to accept female action heroes.
That said, click here to get your copy of LT. COMMANDER MOLLIE SANDERS while it is free on Kindle.
(If you do not have a Kindle, you can can get a FREE Kindle app for your iPhone, iPad, Android, PC or Mac at http://amzn.to/NBoSGU)

Oh, Dear, the Case of the Fake Book Reviews
After reading Rachel Abbott’s eye-opening post “The Ongoing Saga of the Dodgy Review,” I wanted to leave the following comment but WordPress would not accept my gravatar login:
Rachel –I am in shock after reading this post of yours. First, though, I am NOT in shock that people write fake reviews for themselves (I did not know the term sock puppets) because I have seen that advised in at least one ebook I bought on Kindle. (Please note that in my brand-new ebook TOP TIPS FOR HOW TO PUBLISH YOUR BOOK IN THE AGE OF KINDLE I warn against doing this!)
What I am in shock about is authors writing bad reviews for books they perceive as their COMPETITORS! I cannot get my mind around this because authors in the same genre should look at other good authors as collaborators.
In fact, Bonnie B. Latino, Kathleen M. Rodgers, and I have just formed what we call a triad to promote our three experience-based fiction about military spouses — see http://www.phylliszimblermiller.com/triad-us-military-war-novels/
Our premise is that, if someone reads one of our books and enjoys it, the person might be interested in reading the two other books in the same vein.
Okay, enough shock. I do have to share this recent criticism I got for my novel MRS. LIEUTENANT in an otherwise good 4-star review — “One thing I missed in this novel was a separation from thought to thought, story to story etc by *********** or other device. Other than that, layed out very well.”
Putting aside the misspelling of “laid,” each chapter of the novel is entirely from one of the four POVs. And each chapter title includes the name of which of the four women the chapter’s POV is from. Therefore, no *** are needed! As I said to another author, if we aren’t willing to get negative reviews, we shouldn’t publish our books. But for authors to write mean reviews about other authors’ books! That is beyond my understanding.
I decided to publish my response here on my own blog because I want to help spread the word about this issue to other authors, including the expression “sock puppets,” which I admit I had not heard.
As if being an author does not have enough hurdles, now we have more to be concerned about!
If you have an opinion about this issue, do leave a comment below.

Are You Considering Publishing a Book?
The other day, while digging into Haagen-Dazs’ Chocolate Chocolate Chip ice cream, I realized that I could write a third TOP TOPS ebook to provide important information about publishing in the age of Kindle.
The problem with publishing or self-publishing today is that there are so many options that it can be very, very confusing to decide what to do. And with all these options come pitfalls — some of which I have personally encountered.
I sat down at my computer and wrote what I consider the top tips of publishing an ebook, including the pros and cons of putting a book on Amazon’s KDP Select program. (This program requires a 90-day exclusive for an ebook only on Kindle, although physical formats of the ebook may be sold anywhere during the same exclusive period.)
As I wrote about earlier on this blog, I believe that authors need to try out KDP Select for themselves, giving the program a fair trial.
I read yet another overview of an author’s first KDP Select experience. This author did not wait until he had a good number of reviews for his book before having free days on KDP Select.
As I often point out, having free days without a base of good reviews is not a very effective marketing strategy. And this is precisely why I will not have free days for TOP TIPS FOR HOW TO PUBLISH YOUR BOOK IN THE AGE OF KINDLE: Action Steps You Can Do Immediately Whether You Are Unpublished or Already Published until I have several good reviews.
WARNING: Do NOT write your own reviews under fake names (and false Amazon accounts). I actually bought an ebook on Kindle that recommended this strategy.
First, you do not want to be dishonest. Second, you do NOT want you and your books to be thrown off Amazon.

Joy of Book Marketing Collaboration for Military War Novels
Thanks to the Internet I have become friends with Bonnie B. Latino, co-author of military spouse novel YOUR GIFT TO ME, and Kathleen M. Rodgers, author of military spouse novel THE FINAL SALUTE.
Then I read Bill Platt’s report “Dynamic Kindle Marketing,” which triggered the idea of Bonnie, Kathleen and me forming a triad to promote their two military spouse novels and my military spouse novel MRS. LIEUTENANT. (All three of us are former military spouses as well as members of the Military Writers Society of America.)
It makes sense that, if a reader likes one of these three novels, he or she will probably like the other two as all three novels are supportive of U.S. military life. (Bonnie — with her novel’s co-author Bob Vale — and Kathleen write about the U.S. Air Force; I write about the U.S. Army.)
Of course we have each read the other two novels and feel that the three novels form an excellent triad. And we personally know that, when we come to the end of a novel we really enjoy, we would love to have another two similar novels that we could read right now!
Click here to see the page on this website for our triad of U.S. military war novels.
And stay tuned for further joint activities the three of us will be doing together.
P.S. Those of you who like to read about a fictional character in the U.S. Navy, you might be interested in the technothriller LT. COMMANDER MOLLIE SANDERS that I wrote with my husband. This ebook will be FREE on Kindle on Sept. 3 (U.S. Labor Day) and Sept. 4 at http://amzn.to/NUpy9o
