Dead in the Rose City
From award-winning literary criminologist and bestselling crime novelist R. Barri Flowers, author of the legal thrillers Persuasive Evidence and Justice Served, comes the first novel in the private eye crime series, Dead in the Rose City (A Dean Drake Mystery).
A cross between film noir crime dramas and classic hardboiled fiction, Dead in the Rose City is a taut detective novel where nothing is quite what it seems other than cold-blooded murder. Dean Jeremy Drake, nicknamed D.J., is a Jamaican-Italian American private investigator and ex-homicide detective for the Police Bureau in Portland, Oregon. He is six-five, hip, tough, armed with a .40 caliber Glock, and courts danger and romance with equal abandon in Portland, dubbed the Rose City, in the Pacific Northwest.
These qualities are put to the test when Drake takes on two seemingly unrelated cases. In one, a gorgeous blonde named Catherine Ashley Sinclair hires him to see if her husband is being unfaithful. In the other, Drake is asked by Frank Sherman, the Deputy District Attorney for Multnomah County, to track down a drug trafficker nicknamed “The Worm.”
The more he investigates, the more Drake realizes the cases are intricately and dangerously connected. It literally becomes a life and death issue as he is framed for murder, nearly killed, and falls prey to seduction. He has to use all of his detective skills and then some to fit all the pieces together in a deadly, high stakes whodunit and why.

Kauai Killer, a New Psychological Suspense Novel by R. Barri Flowers
Kauai Killer is a psychological suspense novel by award-winning and bestselling crime writer R. Barri Flowers, author of the Hawaii mystery and thriller novels, Seduced to Kill in Kauai, Dead in Kihei, Dead in Pukalani, Murder in Honolulu, Murder of the Hula Dancers, and Murder on Kaanapali Beach, among others.
When Ian Butler and Suzanna McAllister got married on the breathtaking Hawaiian island of Kauai, it seemed like a match made in heaven. Years later, while living in Providence, Rhode Island, Suzanna found herself haunted by the murder-suicide of her parents when she was a little girl, the result of infidelity. Obsessed with the thought that Ian was also a cheater, Suzanna finally sought counseling to save her marriage and her desire to have a family.
Ian, thirty-five and a successful stockbroker, loved his gorgeous wife who was three years younger, and wanted nothing more than to see her get past unwarranted fears of infidelity on his part. But after doing a colleague an innocent favor, Ian’s life turns upside down in ways he could never have anticipated in his worst nightmares.
Suzanna is shot to death in their home and Ian is arrested and charged with her murder, implicated by the victim herself in a 911 call. Though the evidence points toward guilt, a good defense lawyer wins him an acquittal.
Five years later, Ian has moved to the tranquil island of Kauai, finding the notoriety too much to keep his career going or the life he once cherished with Suzanna. He starts a new career as a writer of financial thrillers and begins a relationship with an attractive artist named Jeri Chen, while keeping his painful past where it belongs.
Unbeknownst to Ian, Jeri has secrets of her own. With a new identity, she is on the run from a hitman working for a notorious Dallas drug kingpin. She wound up on Kauai, where life was laid-back and people minded their own business.
Meeting Ian seemed like a dream come true. He was warm and attentive and didn’t ask too many questions or, for that matter, seem too forthcoming about his own history. She preferred it that way--enjoying each other’s company in moving forward and not looking back.
But the past found a way to catch up to both of them in ways neither could have expected, placing their lives in danger and their future in doubt.
Kauai Killer will take readers from life on the mainland to the beautiful paradise of Hawaii in a suspenseful psychological drama of love, obsession, vengeance, and murder.
Bonus material includes a complete psychological suspense thriller short story, “Convinced,” a suspense thriller novella, Killer Connection, and excerpts from mystery thriller novels, Seduced to Kill in Kauai, Dead in Pukalani, Murder in Maui, and Murder in Honolulu.
Kauai Killer is available in eBook and print -- and soon to be in audio.

Street Kids, Second Edition, by R. Barri Flowers
Street Kids: The Lives of Runaway and Thrownaway Teens, Second Edition, by award-winning and bestselling criminologist R. Barri Flowers, examines the pathway from home to homeless for runaways and thrownaways, including precursors to life on the street, such as child abuse and neglect, sexual abuse, substance abuse, mental health, promiscuity, behavioral issues, and problems related to sexual orientation/gender identity.
Explored as well are the consequences of homelessness and vulnerable street kids, such as survival sex and commercial child sexual exploitation by pimps, customers, pornographers, pedophiles, and others who prey on minors; sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV, other health concerns, and violence experienced by runaway, thrownaway, and homeless youth.
The book will also discuss legal, law enforcement, and other efforts to curb running away and combat the victimization of runaway and thrownaway youth by sexual exploiters, perpetrators of violence, gangs, drug addicts, bias offenders, and other homeless or victimizers.
Street Kids will be a useful source for child welfare advocates, academics, professionals, sociologists, criminologists, researchers, laypersons, and others with an interest in the plight and mistreatment of children living on the streets or away from a safe home environment.

Free Audible Read of True Crime Short, Killer of Her Husband’s Secretary
From R. Barri Flowers, award-winning criminologist and bestselling author of Murder of the Horse Trainer’s Rival, Murderess on the Loose, Murder at the Pencil Factory, Murder of the Doctor’s Wife, and Murder During the Chicago World’s Fair, offering a free Audible read of my latest thought-provoking historical true crime short, Killer of Her Husband’s Secretary: The 1935 Love Triangle Ire of Etta Reisman.
On the morning of August 14, 1935, Virginia Seigh, an attractive twenty-three-year-old secretary, was shot and killed as she stood in the driveway of a home in Queens, New York. Her murderer was Mrs. Etta Reisman, the thirty-five-year-old wife of Arthur Reisman, a forty-two-year-old well-to-do owner of a beauty salon chain. The previous day, Reisman had confessed to his wife that he had fallen in love with Miss Seigh--his secretary, who had resided with the Reismans for seven years--and wanted a separation. This did not set well with Etta, who felt totally betrayed by her husband and their house guest, causing her to snap and go on a shooting frenzy.
Along with Reisman himself, also witnessing the shocking homicide was his daughter from an earlier marriage, Annette Reisman. The twenty-three-year-old was injured when she attempted to take the gun from the unhinged shooter.
Etta Reisman was arrested and charged with murder in this classic case of a love triangle that ended tragically for all parties concerned. The embittered wife turned vengeful killer was convicted of the crime of violence, resulting in a stunning and controversial action the judge set in motion.
The heartbreaking tale of Etta Reisman has endured through the decades as, sadly, many others have followed the same path of jealous rage as an often impulsive and deadly response to being wronged and paying an even greater price themselves in the final analysis.
Bonus material includes a chapter from the author’s bestselling true crime book, Serial Killer Couples: Bonded by Sexual Depravity, Abduction, and Murder. Also included are excerpts from the author’s true crime anthologies, Murder and Menace: Riveting True Crime Tales, and Murder Chronicles: A Collection of Chilling True Crime Tales.

New Audio Short from R. Barri Flowers
From R. Barri Flowers, an award-winning criminologist and best-selling author of Murder of the Horse Trainer’s Rival, Murderess on the Loose, Murder at the Pencil Factory, and Murder of the Doctor’s Wife, comes the thought-provoking historical true-crime audio short, Killer of Her Husband’s Secretary: The 1935 Love Triangle Ire of Etta Reisman.
On the morning of August 14, 1935, Virginia Seigh, an attractive 23-year-old secretary, was shot and killed as she stood in the driveway of a home in Queens, New York.
Her murderer was Mrs. Etta Reisman, the 35-year-old wife of Arthur Reisman, a 42-year-old well-to-do owner of a beauty salon chain.
The previous day, Reisman had confessed to his wife he had fallen in love with Miss Seigh - his secretary, who had resided with the Reismans for seven years - and wanted a separation. This did not set well with Etta, who felt totally betrayed by her husband and their house guest, causing her to snap and go on a shooting frenzy.
Along with Reisman himself, also witnessing the shocking homicide was his daughter from an earlier marriage, Annette Reisman. The 23-year-old was injured when she attempted to take the gun from the unhinged shooter.
Etta Reisman was arrested and charged with murder in this classic case of a love triangle that ended tragically for all parties concerned.
The embittered wife turned vengeful killer was convicted of the crime of violence, resulting in a stunning and controversial action the judge set in motion.
The heartbreaking tale of Etta Reisman has endured through the decades as, sadly, many others have followed the same path of jealous rage as an often impulsive and deadly response to being wronged, paying an even greater price themselves in the final analysis.
Bonus material includes a chapter from the author’s best-selling true-crime work Serial Killer Couples and excerpts from the author’s true-crime anthologies Murder and Menace and Murder Chronicles.

Free Audible Codes for Review of New Civil War Era True Crime Murder Mystery Short, Murder of the U.S. Attorney: Congressman Sickles’ Crime of Passion in 1859
Award-winning criminologist R Barri Flowers, best-selling author of Murder at the Pencil Factory, is giving away a few Audible codes of his latest gripping new historical true-crime audio short, Murder of the U.S. Attorney: Congressman Sickles’ Crime of Passion in 1859 -- for a review in Amazon or Audible -- or simply to spread the word on this fascinating audio book for 19th century historians or those with an interest in the Civil War, Washington DC politics, and murder.
On February 27, 1859, Philip Barton Key II, the 40-year-old US attorney for the District of Columbia, was gunned down while standing in Lafayette Square, a public park across from the White House. His killer was Rep. Daniel Sickles, a 39-year-old New York congressman and lawyer who had a striking young wife, Teresa Sickles, with whom Key had been having an affair.
Upon discovering his wife's infidelity, Sickles became enraged and had the deadly encounter with her suitor. Afterward, he surrendered to authorities, confessed, was charged with murder, and went to trial.
In spite of the cold-blooded and premeditated nature of the attack, Sickles used a defense of temporary insanity for his actions, the first such time this type of legal defense was employed in the US. He was acquitted as a result and the "temporarily insane" justification for homicide or other serious intimate-involved offenses became a common defense for so-called crimes of passion.
Sickles, who was no stranger to public scandals and controversy, was able to effectively get away with murder. He would reconcile with his wife for a short time, continue a career in politics, and become a decorated soldier for the Union Army during the Civil War and a diplomat before dying in his 90s.
His long life aside, taking the life of his wife's lover, Philip Key, in a fit of jealousy would forever remain a major part of Daniel Sickles' legacy, as chronicled in this compelling trip back in time of more than 150 years.
Bonus material includes a complete historical true-crime short, Dead at the Saddleworth Moor, and excerpts from the author's best-selling true-crime anthologies, The Dreadful Acts of Jack the Ripper and Murder and Menace: Riveting True Crime Tales, Vol. Three.
