City of Dogs is now a podcast
A few weeks ago, I launched the City of Dogs podcast, talking with people and dogs from my City of Dogs book about their neighborhoods and how they are coping in the midst of this extended pandemic. We also have some special guests along the way, including dog park experts talking about community and compassion fatigue experts advising us on dealing with stress. You can listen here or on Spotify, ApplePodcasts and IHeart Radio.

How to Stay Sane: a newsletter

Hello from my house to yours,
I don't have to tell you what a strange and difficult time we are all having. But I did want to share with you some things that might help you occupy your time, relax, and reduce stress. We all have a lot of information available to us via the internet, but sometimes having a list helps us get to things that are right in front of us. On a stress-reduction seminar last night, Jessica Dolce reminded everyone that lists are good, helping others are good, and it is...

Short pieces on boxing and "Yesterday" at Medium.com

One piece is a short essay on boxing and how I became interesting in boxing classes, which I've now taken in several countries. You can read that boxing essay here.
In another, I ponder the role...

Talking NYC Dogs on One to One with Sheila McCarthy
In December, I taped this 30-minute interview at CUNY-TV, which began airing a few weeks ago. It was nice to have a full half hour to talk about dogs and the importance of their role in our communities, as well as the trend in animal welfare of providing resources in underserved communities. We also talked about my book City of Dogs.

New book out October 9th: City of Dogs: New York Dogs, Their Neighborhoods, and the People Who Love Them

Three years ago, I posted on this blog that I was leaving New Orleans to come back to New York City and begin a program that was to be called Community Dogs. It quickly became Community Pets, and in our third year we will have held 16 free vaccination clinics in underserved neighborhoods in the Bronx. We also have free dog training, a pet food pantry and other services, funded by grants awarded to the Animal Care Centers of NYC. But, when I moved bac...

Review: A View From the Bridge on Broadway
I hadn't been planning to see the new revival of "A View From the Bridge," but several things turned my indifference to enthusiasm. First, the upcoming revival of "The Crucible," also by Arthur Miller. Then, too, the director, whose recent "Antigone," with Juliet Binoche had moved me. And, finally, the prospect of on-stage seating lured me in, although it seems like a silly gimmick to promise a more "visceral" experience when, in fact, we're more likely to see the flaws of the act...
