592cemetery

This is an interesting piece.  I originally pencilled it five years ago!  I found it while going through files and had already been wanting to do an MGTZ piece influenced by the Bride of Frankenstein.  With some minor adjustments, and then digital inks, it was good to go!  I added color and kept an adjusted layer of the blue pencils for texture.  I wanted a background although I had not pencilled one years ago.  I found a public domain photo of a cemetery, adjusted it, converted it to screen tone dots, and then colored that.  And there you have it, an unintended My Gal, the Zombie piece, over five years in the making!

It almost felt like collaborating with another artist as opposed to working individually since I had done the pencils a while ago.  Enjoy!  Happy early Halloween!

This week, i’m back to posting 3 pages again.  I notice that I’ve been doing many colored pin ups and that I haven’t done a new comic story in a little while.  I need to catch up on some commissions.  But, they’re coming, soon!  This week I’m posting colored drawings I did at Cheyenne Zombie Fest, which was really really great!

590LashCollab

Here is the 590th webcomic post to Crazy Good Comics!  That mean’s we’re only 10 posts from 600.  I can barely believe it!

Not only that, it’s a fun collaboration with one of my favorite cartoonists, Batton Lash!  We got to meet and talk a few times at San Diego Comic Con last year and have kept in touch.  He is well known for Supernatural Law, a comic with the catch phrase “Beware the Creatures of the Night… They have Lawyers!”  It’s a really good monster humor comic.  He also has written the Archie meets the Punisher crossover, Radioactive Man, and others.

Read his comics at www.supernaturallaw.com and www.exhibitapress.com

Batton wrote and penciled this piece.  I inked and colored it.  Real fun collaboration!

This is not quite a MGTZ image, but it has enough commonalities, I do believe, that it is worth posting here.  I have occasionally posted images from other projects on which I am working, but it has been a long time since I have done so.  This is a monster try out of a villain from another project I have.  It is from Hilly Willy Bing Bong which was what I was giving out free CD soundtracks to at San Diego Comic Con this year.

I know I have not posted a MGTZ story page in a while.  I have the next story scripted and I’m really excited about it, but I’ve had a few other projects I’m wrapping up.

Naked Bathtub Comicbook Suicides are not Funny

Harley

Original pen & ink from my sketchbook for sale, about 8.5×11. paypal dan@crazygoodcomics.com $25. include address

I posted about the dccomics.com/talentsearch/ contest on facebook last week, after having skimmed over the guidelines. I didn’t think too much about the “script.”*

I don’t expect to “win” this contest. However, I do think that I could do a fair job on it and I’ve actually been a fan of this character. Cool opportunity. Maybe I’ll get some publicity, even.

However, I will NOT draw one of my favorite DC characters, on the verge of comedic suicide in a bathtub. This is something I will never draw. Ever? Nope, never.

Instead, I will still enter this contest and substitute my own 4th panel. I will disqualify myself from the contest in so doing and maybe make a cool statement and get even more press. Please keep on the lookout for when I post this page.

Check out this article, which caught more of my attention:

http://jezebel.com/dc-comics-contest-draw-a-naked-woman-committing-suicid-1265537616

*I did think  it was an odd “script” since it is at best four static nearly unrelated images as opposed to sequential narrative visual storytelling. It doesn’t even have dialogue. You don’t have to have dialogue, but I would think this would be part of a typical contest submission.

** The identifying feature of Harley is her costume. She debuted in Batman: The Animated Series. Most people who know who she is know her costume, which is very iconic and lasted unchanged for about 20 years.

[she since has received a newer costume which i think does not fit her "carefree" and "zany" personality and i have found has also symbolized a different aspect of her character. i've bought 1 of her comics in recent years and thoroughly did not enjoy her portrayal. this is coming from a person who had previously collected nearly every one of her comic appearances].  To have a Harley Quinn contest where she is not in any established costume for half of the submission is ridiculous.
I do not see that she needs to be in a chicken “bikini” as Jezebel described in their article, but to have her wearing a “suit of raw chicken” in one panel and “naked in a bathtub” in the other shows that this could be ANY lady and that it doesn’t even have to pertain to Dr. Quinzel. #ridiculous

I do think that REQUIRING a NUDE lady, for the only open call contest they’re doing along these lines,  is pretty ridiculous. That it is also a BATHTUB SUICIDE scene is preposterous.
Would they do this if it were a male character? Would they have a Joker comic submission where you HAD to draw the Joker naked?  They’ve not done anything like that yet.  In fact, try and find a comic with the Joker naked.  Go for it.  Then try and find a comic with Harley Quinn naked.  See which is easier.  Maybe this sexism thing really does exist.

DC is requiring that you draw a naked suicide to enter their talent contest to draw for them.  #REALLY? Is that how the world works?  I guess it is.

The original art for this is for sale, too.  Paypal me $35 [30 for piece, and 5 for shipping] include another 5 if you’d like the MGTZ compact comic.  Include another 5 on top of that if you would like one of the accessories pictured in the blog post below.  Specify everything you would like.

paypal to dan@crazygoodcomics.com

This is what the original art looks like.  It measures 8.5×11 and is drawn on cardstock with green pencil, black ink, and a little bit of white out.

Thanks!
