Merry Christmas 2014 from the Blumer Family
Greetings, family and friends! Yes, it’s that time of year again—and I’ll try not to bore you by saying the same ol’ things I say every year. At this time of year, however, it’s tough not to reflect on where we were a year ago and on what God did in our lives over the last twelve months. And God, as always, did many wonderful things as only He can. I consider myself to be a very blessed man for many reasons. God has blessed me with an amazing wife, Kim, and two gorgeous daughters, Laura (13) and Julia (10). I also get to work from home as a full-time editor and write novels as God grants me time, and I’m so thankful for that. I get to work with words all day, every day, so that’s another blessing. Writing time was frankly hard to come by this year. With two…

Fatal Illusions has found new publishing home
Yeah! I have exciting news. Though Fatal Illusions is going out of print with Kregel, another publisher has stepped up, eager to republish it. I’m so encouraged! I was afraid the novel might be doomed for a drawer somewhere. The contract is in the mail, and I hope to have official news soon. I’ll keep you posted!

Fatal Illusions Going Out of Print
Yes, it’s official. Kregel Publications recently informed me that Fatal Illusions, my first published novel, is officially out of print. Out of print? What exactly does that mean? That means sales have not been sufficient to warrant a reprint, and all remaining copies of the novel, once kept in a warehouse, have been sold away (though if you go to Amazon.com you’ll still see some copies for sale). Kregel basically “bought” ownership of my book for five years, and now the book is back in my hands: lock, stock, and barrel. Is this reason for despair? Not at all. This is pretty routine in the publishing industry. While every novelist would like to see his or her novels being published and going through countless reprints infinitum, let’s admit it: most novels just don’t sell like hotcakes forever, if they sell decently at all. Is this disheartening? Well, yeah, it can…

The Unexpected Lesson of Secretariat
It’s no secret: my girls love horses. And along with that love comes another love: for horse movies. One family-friendly movie we came across a while back—and one we’ve probably seen a half-dozen times—is Secretariat. Now, this movie isn’t perfect; there is some brief, mild language. But as for sports movie about beating impossible odds, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more powerful one. Nope, this article is no review of the movie (Focus on the Family has a good review here) but rather a critique of its message. But to understand the takeaway value of this article requires at least an elementary understanding of what the movie is about. Here’s a brief synopsis: [Spoiler alert] Penny Tweedy goes against all odds and even risks her financial stability and family relationships to save the family horse-breeding business by winning the Triple Crown in 1973 (that’s three of the biggest…

A Chat with Novelist Rick Barry
Welcome to a new dimension of my blog: interviews. I’d love to highlight friends of mine who’ve written some fantastic books, books I can wholeheartedly recommend to you and your friends. As you know, I believe in clean and meaningful Christian fiction, so I’m careful about who I endorse. My first guest is Rick Barry, an author friend I’ve known for several years. Without further ado, join Rick and me as we sip our coffee and chat about Christian publishing. So, Rick, how did you get started in publishing your novels? I started writing short stories and articles in my sophomore year of college. My first article was an entry in a Christian magazine’s writing contest. I didn’t win, but they offered to buy my article and called it an “Honorable mention.” That was the first time I realized I might actually have a knack for weaving words that other…

The Value of Free
Recently, Kregel Publications ran a special sale of my first novel, Fatal Illusions, and then offered it free for one day, July 10th. If you missed out on the freebie, I’m sorry about that. I would love to have offered it free for several more days, but I had no control over the special sale. The freebie delighted me for several reasons. First, I have a good number of author friends who are pursuing indie publishing and speak highly of offering their novels for free on occasion. So I’ve often watched them offer their novels for free and wished I could do the same. Second, as anyone who watches me on Facebook knows, I love freebie Kindle books too. I love to download them, and I love to share them. I’d also put a lot of time and work into this first novel, and I was excited about folks being…
