León Garzón respiró por primera vez en 1985 en Fort Bragg (California), el día que jugó al ahorcado con su propio cordón umbilical. El médico no se había dado cuenta, pero su padre le avisó justo a tiempo cuando lo vio en los monitores. Su padre, español, que se cruzó con su madre, trinitense, en San Cristóbal de las Casas (México). Por todo esto, y por todo lo que ocurrió después, no cree en las casualidades.

Cuando tenía dos años, se trasladaron a Asturias, en el norte de España, donde, en vez de literatura, acabó estudiando una ingeniería de telecomunicaciones, carrera que lo llevó primero a Madrid y luego a Buenos Aires. Allí, entre mate y dulce de leche, perdió el miedo a decir que es escritor.
