No Cannes Do
I'm not going to Cannes this year which as you can imagine has made me very sad - NOT! Just to prove that you don't need to travel to the South of France and put up with all that madness - I'm inviting submissions for my rival alternative virtual film festival right here in the UK.

Box Office, Shockers and Hoods
I've posted recently about the importance (or not) of US box office figures, the lack of scares in new horror movies and Red Riding Hood inspired films. Here I pick out some of the most interesting responses you sent in.

Block Rocking Meat
After years of purveying comedic whimsy drawn from his childhood pop culture obsessions Joe Cornish has stepped up a gear with his directorial debut Attack the Block, a science fiction action adventure that draws on his childhood pop culture obsessions.

Biker Boys
There's a new documentary out this week called TT3D: Closer to the Edge, about the infamous Isle of Man motorcycle racing event. I have no interest in sport in general or bikes in particular but this film is about much, much more and really impressed me.

Theremins
The Theremin is perhaps the greatest musical instrument ever invented and is the sound of 50s Sci Fi. Here I demonstrate its strange power...

Girls In The Hood
There's a new version of Red Riding Hood out this week made by Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke. It's not the first time this dark tale of wolf trouble has been adapted - I've got my favourites - but what are yours?

Burning Rubber
At Cannes last year there was a lot of fuss about Rubber - a cult movie about a killer car tyre. Now the film has been released on DVD - how does it stand up outside of the hothouse atmosphere of the film festival ?

Scare Stories
I've seen a bunch of new horror movies in all shapes and sizes recently but none of them have frightened me. Have I become impossible to terrify or have films just stopped being scary?

Box Office Baloney
The much-publicised flop of the new animated film Mars Needs Moms begs an important question. Since when did the US box office mean so much to us and should we really care?
