Boston

got our saltwater grins and our crucifix burns

got our blood-knuckled heroes and their

sanctified urns of the altars that bore them, the

poor sons of green the incense spread out

through the harbor the cool ivy queens,

got our brass weapons ready they were forged

from the hearth of our puritan devils who

sought dominion over the earth for their brimstone-

eyed god and his gallows-faced son but we’re

in a new kingdom now, and our god’s more

elaborate, one who demands all the glass,

the stain and the paint, we’ve got bruised-up

jaws jutted we got the patience of saints

we got that yankee sneer down we got our

witchcraft home-grown we got our citadels

of learning we got our downtown knives drawn-

we’re snow-shadowed stormbound

we got a dangerous will; you got your

I-95 monsters but ours are the toughest

to kill, we got ships wrecked in our harbors

we got that revolutionary lie stuffed up

our sleeves for when the tourists stop by.

don’t believe one single word that we say

straight-faced out front, we got back rooms

opened up when the mass is all done; we’re

the salt of the earth we’re the bricklayers sons

we’re smart and we’re sharp and we always come

armed.

“Once, Picasso was asked what his paintings meant. He said, “Do you ever know what the birds are singing? You don’t. But you listen to them anyway.” So, sometimes with art, it is important just to look.”

“No man, for any considerable period, can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which may be the true.”
