Favorite Quotes from Pastor Phil Hopper

Phil Hopper is the lead pastor at Abundant Life Church in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. For 23 years, he has been fighting the good fight by taking an uncompromising approach to preaching the Word of God. Since February 2022, I have sat in the audience captivated by Pastor Phil’s intellect and spiritual strength. Here are some of my favorite Pastor Phil quotes to date:

To a faithless religion, believing is seeing.

We were made for relationship with God, and relationship with one another.

When you’ve lost everything else, you can’t lose Jesus.

They [the world] can’t see Him, but they can see us.

Baptism is…”an outward profession of an inward decision.”

He took off his robes of royalty and put on the flesh of humanity to die at Calvary.

Believing about Him is religion; believing in Him is redemption.

Today is the day to make a decision that has the power to define your destination.

At the end, everything’s gonna be okay; and if it’s not okay, it’s because it’s not the end yet.

Choose God and you choose light and life. Choose Satan and you choose darkness and death.

Which of Pastor Phil’s quotes resonated most with you?

Want to hear more from Pastor Phil? You can tune in LIVE every Sunday or view the past sermons these quotes were pulled from by visiting livingproof.co/sermons. Click any video with Pastor Phil in the thumbnail. Honestly, there’s never been a sermon I’ve sat through that I haven’t taken notes from him.

Thank you for reading! Jesus loves you.

Why World Building Matters

World building is so much more than describing setting. World building is establishing how your fictional world functions, what the rules are, and what life there is like. When properly established, these elements create a foundation for your readers to stand on and allows the reader to submerge in the story instead of seeking to understand where and how it takes place. Let’s look closer at these elements and just how they affect readers.

World building seeks to answer two main questions: What do your characters see (setting), and how do your characters live (era)?

Era

The functionality of a book builds a rule system that maintains consistency throughout the story. For example, if in chapter one your characters are using a standard Beretta M9 that fires ordinary bullets, it’d be quite a shock if chapter 9 reads that those bullets become high-tech futuristic ammunition that can penetrate bulletproof glass. That defies the rules you’ve put into place for eight chapters now. Consistency is key to understanding; and without first understanding, your readers cannot imagine and enjoy.

One of the most successful ways to establish how your fictional world functions is through era. If your characters are set in the prehistoric era, readers expect there to be no modern technology, and for your characters to exhibit primitive behavior and most likely a lack of verbal communication skills. However, if your characters are set in the renaissance era, readers understand the rules of the world to function with horse drawn carriages, exotic costumes bursting with color, and most likely a kingdom of sorts as the established government.

Era can also define society’s acceptance of your creatures. For instance, back in the early 2000’s, ghosts were still scrapped in the “hoax” category and shows like Ghost Hunters sought to disprove their existence. However, in today’s society, ghosts have become more widely accepted and even sought out. Here’s another example: witches in the nineteenth century were burned at the stake; but witches in modern society are considered heroes.

Common eras I encounter:

PrehistoricMedievalRenaissanceMiddle AgesModernDystopian (this is a common enough “time” to include here)

Ways to indirectly hint at era:

Technology: cars/buggies, computers/letters, humans/robots, guns/swordsHousing: huts (past), houses (present), no gravity spheres (future)Medicine: inferior to present, modern, advancedWardrobe: tunic, trousers and tees, armor and chainmail

Setting

Often times, a story’s foundation is not in the “when” or “how” but in the “where.” The most common occurrence of this is when the fantasy world differs from earth. Some characters rely on portals to jump between places instead of traveling by train, plane, or car. Some fantasy stories rely heavily on terrain to play part as the antagonist (raging sea storms with sea monsters, abandoned towns in dystopian novels, etc.). Sometimes the theme of a fantasy novel is a kingdom, and the hierarchy or interaction of regions (wealthy/poor, sustainable/uninhabitable, etc.).

Ways to describe your fantasy setting:

Location: mountains, island, rural/urbanWeather: sky is purple, never rains, naturally cold/hotResembles: England, Russia, AmericaPlanet: gravity, breathable air, blue sky/green grass/clear water

Sometimes it Matters, Sometimes it Doesn’t

In the case that the book is a character-focused story, the author focuses on characters’:

Rank: socially, politically, and militarilySpecies: dwarf, elf, werewolf, ghost, vampire, or just plain humanSupernatural powers: telekinesis, teleportation, psychic visions, rapid healingRelevance in furthering the plot

Only Describe What You Need

Overloading readers with descriptive language can distract from the plot. If the details aren’t necessary to further the story, further develop the characters, or to prevent ambiguity, leave the details out.

Consistency is key in understanding. But world building is the key to imagination.

Thanks for reading!

Why Do I Need a Beta Read?

What is a Beta Read?

A beta read is the first step in the process of preparing your written work for publication. Beta reads occur prior to professional editing, and consist of a hired or volunteer reader that scrutinizes elements of your written work to improve its quality and comprehension.

Why Do I Need a Beta Read?

While we’d like to convince ourselves that our work is perfect after we type “the end,” the harsh reality is that our manuscripts are constantly in need of revision.

Beta reads typically focus on big picture elements in written works, such as:

Character developmentConsistencyPacingStructurePlot holesAny specific detail the author requests

Catching these errors in the beta read phase decreases the chance of having to hire a developmental editor, which can be costly.

A beta read also provides the first reaction to the story, and may offer their opinion on the entertainment value of the book and which characters they liked and disliked. (Note: Remember, no two readers read the same story identically, so take opinions into consideration.)

Who Do I Get to Beta Read my Manuscript?

Family and friends may seem like the perfect people to beta read your novel, especially if they’re free, but trusting someone familiar runs the risk of receiving false praise. Instead, it’s suggested that you hire an outside source who will have no emotional attachment to you as the author.

Reaching out to another author can be a great way to find a beta reader. You can offer to trade manuscripts and beta read for one another. Asking a fellow writer outside your genre is a good idea, too. Often times, beta readers who double as authors in your genre will see right away what you’re trying to convey, whereas a reader who rarely or never read your genre will be exploring and understanding for the first time.

Hiring a seasoned beta reader is ideal. They will likely view the story from a more critical and less opinionated lens. In all honesty, we as authors don’t want our beta readers to respond with, “It was good!” We want the truth, “It wasn’t the best it could be, and here’s why…”

For best results, hire 2-3 different beta readers.

Where Can I Find a Beta Reader?

Writing communities online are a great source for finding beta readers. Send out a “Beta readers wanted” Tweet or DM bookstagrammers on Instagram and Tik Tok.

Fiverr is my recommended source for hiring experienced beta readers. (Yes, I am a seasoned beta reader, and yes I am going to market myself here. No, that’s not why I wrote the post, and no, I’m not going to try and woo you with my 66/66 5-star reviews.) If you do hire a beta reader from Fiverr, here are my recommendations:

For manuscripts under 100k words, don’t pay more than $35 for a beta read. Most beta readers are going to give you less feedback for more money. I charge $25 for 100k words and under, and I provide embedded notes throughout the manuscript as well as an “Overall Thoughts” section at the end with suggested edits.DM the beta reader before submitting an order. The clock starts ticking for the beta reader as soon as you submit the requirements for the order on Fiverr, and the beta reader might not be able to complete the manuscript in the time frame offered on their gig. This could be due to custom orders they are currently running or a special circumstance your book requests that may require more time to complete. It’s best to DM the beta reader first to see if they are able to meet you and your book’s needs.Hire a beta reader with a 48-hour response rate. This matters most if your book is on a tight publishing schedule. The longest I let a message stand is 24 hours, and that’s usually only because they message me on Sunday (the Sabbath I honor by doing no work). After DM-ing the beta reader to check their availability, expect a 24-48 hour response. This response shows how the beta reader prioritizes their buyers and how likely you are to receive your manuscript on the delivery date should you hire that particular beta reader.

A beta read is one of the most critical phases of your book’s journey to publication. Remember, you don’t want the ego-boost feedback, you want the constructively critical feedback. Don’t pay an overpriced beta reader to do a half-invested job. And offering a beta-read-for-beta-read boosts your networking for sales.

Good luck out there! Thanks for reading!

I Can Beta Read Your Book!

As an active member of the Writing Community, I have beta read for authors all over Twitter for two years. I provide thorough feedback, constructively critical suggestions, and I always want what’s best for your book!

Best Day of My Life

If you’re thinking the best day of my life was the birth of either of my children or the day I published my first book, those are good guesses. But the answer is actually the Sunday when my pastor slam-dunked me into a vat of freezing water.

In 2018, I Fell in Love

Despite the title of this section, 2018 was actually the darkest year of my life. By February 2018, I had suffered four years of neglect and abuse from my husband and had decided to leave him. Any abused woman will tell you that the struggle is never harder than when you make that decision to cut off the power source of a narcissist. I was in the valley of the shadow of death, quite literally. Contemplating suicide, scarring myself physically, mentally incapable of taking care of my two toddlers, oppressed into submission. I was scared, alone, heartbroken, and lost. Then, I opened my Bible, and I was found.

Jesus spent the next four years of my life turning me from a beggar to a provider. From wounded to healed. From a victim to a victor. He pulled me out of the darkness and into the Light all while teaching me about His Father and how God had loved me through the abuse of my ex-husband. Getting to know Jesus as intimately as I did in my greatest suffering, I fell in love with Him. The hero who fought the unseen battles for me. The shepherd who rescued me from the valley and brought me into His community. The One who taught me what love is supposed to feel like. The healer who mended my broken heart. I fell in love with the One who saves and made a commitment to be His for the rest of my life.

In 2022, I Took the Plunge

Fast forward four years, and I’m now employed with a car of my own, a published book under my name, an apartment all my own, and a church home I belonged to. God led me to Pastor Phil Hopper of Abundant Life Church in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and man, Pastor Phil’s scripturally-sound sermons deepened my understanding of God, which deepened my love for Him. It was this year that I realized I’d been in love with Jesus for four years now and was ready to officially proclaim that relationship to the world.

On December 4th, 2022, I marched into Abundant Life’s Lee’s Summit campus in black shorts and a “Changed by Jesus” tee. I dropped the red ball with my name into the number 1 and walked up onto the stage. Pastor Chad Glover, the kind soul he is, met me there in the vat of freezing water. He asked me, “You ready to give your life to Christ?”

I looked him dead in the eye, imagining my Christ there before me, and said, “Yes I am.”

Pastor Chad said, “All right, let’s do this.”

Supporting my back, he submerged me in freezing cold water and pulled me up. As I resurfaced, I felt a lifetime of pain, shame, guilt, sorrow, heartache, and sin fall out of me. I was washed inside and out and when I came up out of that water, Jesus was waiting there at the top of the stairs with eyes alight with pride and adoration as He welcomed me home into the Kingdom.

Pastor Phil says baptism is “an outward profession of an inward decision.” The same way that a wedding is a ceremonial profession to the world that you have inwardly committed yourself to your groom/bride, a baptism is the profession that you have surrendered yourself to Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior.

I belong to Him. And I always will. In this temporal life, and the eternal one to follow.

I Love You

In light of Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I wanted you to know one thing: I love you. Yes YOU!

But these words aren’t from me, Danny Raye. They’re from the King of Kings written in His blood in John 3:16:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

– John 3:16

Jesus Loves You As You Are

If you’ve ever been told that you have to be a Christian or a saint for Jesus to love you, you’ve been lied to. Jesus loves everyone as they are at this moment in time. He never expects you to come to Him once you’re healed or once you’re sinless. He knows you can’t be healed or sanctified without Him (John 15:5). He wants you to come to him as you are—broken, bruised, scared, lonely, ashamed, confused, guilty—because He wants to fix all your problems.

When I met Jesus, I was in an abusive relationship. My mental state was in shambles, my emotional state was crumbling, my financial state was in the negative. I was contemplating suicide, scarring myself physically, and deteriorating inside. My entire life was being upheaved by my ex-husband’s sins and it was at that moment, when my ex-husband was stepping out, that Christ stepped in. Jesus was the Light that led me out of the darkness. He saved my life. The thing is, Christ also saved my ex-husband’s. No longer addicted to drugs and in a dedicated relationship with the mother of his newborn baby, my ex-husband’s life has radically changed from who he was. Because Christ doesn’t just love Christians. He loves everyone. He came for me and my ex-husband that day.

Jesus loves you, too. No matter who you are. No matter what you’ve done. He loves you. You just need to let Him.

How Do I Let Jesus In?

Prayer: Close your eyes. Open your heart. Breathe in deep. Breath out slowly. Call out His name. Now listen. Feel. If you’ve opened your heart and opened your mind to the possibility of Christ, you’ll feel something you’ve never felt this side of Heaven: relief, peace.Read Scripture: The Bible isn’t just a well-told story. It’s history. Documented and legitimized by historians and archaeologists. But the Bible is also God’s written voice. When you read the Word of God, you’re hearing the voice of God. The Father is speaking to you directly. And in verses beyond John 3:16, you can see Jesus expressing His love for you on every page. Here are some great love verses to read through: Galatians 2:20, Jeremiah 31:3, 1 John 3:10, 1 John 4:10, Romans 5:8, Romans 8:38-39. Come to Church: Intimidating, I know. Trust me, until February 2022 I was too afraid to step into a church. The previous ones I’d been to felt like cults and a bunch of rich folks judging me for being the poor girl. Until joining Abundant Life, I didn’t know what church was supposed to feel like. Now, every time I walk through those doors, I feel like I’m home. Now, those people are my brothers and sisters in Christ. Through them, I feel the love of Jesus. His compassion, His care, His welcoming embrace. Don’t let what you “think” church is like stop you from stepping foot in another church. You’d be sorely missing out on finding your spiritual family, on finding Christ.Watch “The Chosen”: The Chosen is a show that portrays the life of Jesus Christ as is written in the New Testament. The show is uncompromisingly accurate to scripture. And because the show is 100% crowd-funded, it’s FREE to download on The Chosen app and it’s FREE to watch. No subscriptions. No hidden fees. Just Jesus. Watching the show brings Jesus back to life.

You are not unloved this Valentine’s Day. There is One who has always loved you waiting at the door. Open up. Invite Him in. Let Him change your life. Valentine’s Day will never be the same. It’ll always be a reminder that you are loved by the one true King.

Dear Satan by: Mary Clark

Dear Satan,

You prey on innocence and look like love

I happily believed you

God heard me crying from above

“My only God, I need you”

Your subtle lies would pull me back

Oh, how I wanted freedom

You felt like all that I had lacked

But in my days, I need Him

Insecure, I’d cling to your hand

Afraid of light’s exposure

Chained and shackled straight to man

Where was my closure?

Obedience and patience thin,

Why was I not growing?

I gave you what belongs to Him

God, I’m sorry for not knowing

The battle was within the chase

You’re not the side that won

Redeemed through his true holy grace

He gave to me His Son

Now I see you as regret

The monster in disguise

You used the man that I had met

Who led me straight to Christ

But now stay down; how dare you speak!

You’ll never win your game

I cry out humbled, cry out meek

“JESUS LORD, I PRAISE YOUR NAME!”

Your wickedness will never win

Our God is on our side

You used one of his chosen men

You walked him into lies

Just so you know, my sword is strong

God’s Word has sealed your fate

You succeeded in him doing wrong

But I refuse to hate

I rebuke you, oh fallen one

Our God has heard us sing

Stay away from me and those I love

JESUS CHRIST IS MY KING.

I Want to Write a Book…Where Do I Start?

So you wanna write a book, do ya? Here are three steps to get your writing career off to the right start.

Build Platform

Before writers even start thinking of the book side of things, it’s recommended that we think first about the marketing side. Sounds a little backward, doesn’t it? The purpose of building a platform is so you have an established audience to sell the book to once it is published.

If you’re planning to publish traditionally, platform will increase your chances of landing an agent and publishing deal. Think about it: the larger or more engaged your established audience, the more money the publishing house will make off your book sales.

If you’re a self-published author, you’ll need platform more than traditionally published authors because marketing is all up to you. The more engaged you are in your platform pre-publication, the more likely you are to sell lots of books through that platform post-publication.

So what is platform? Platform is the exposure you receive through social media outlets (Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Linkedin, Reddit, etc.) and websites. A website is vital for book sales. It’s the one-stop-shop for your readers. Think of the website as the base of operations that all your social media apps branch off of. Your apps promote the content on your site, and your site offers a home for all your published books.

Platform requires time to build, which is why it’s the recommended first step. You’ll need to establish connections with other writers, develop a consistent scheduling plan if you decide to blog, post frequently to social media (8-12 times a day is recommended), and engage as much as possible with comments. All of this cultivates a following that you will then be able to sell your book to once it’s published. And you can do all of it while writing your novel.

Create an Outline

You think you know your plot and characters well enough to type out the whole story right now, don’t you? Well guess what, when your characters decide to take a random romantic turn at chapter 12 and you end up writing a new Hallmark movie instead of a new murder mystery, it’ll be common sense that somewhere the plot went off the rails. How? Because you didn’t have an outline to adhere to.

Many times while I’m beta reading, a book will start off with one plot and then shift to a brand new one midway through the book. Or there will be considerable inconsistencies within the plot itself that causes confusion and lack of closure by the final chapter. Some are so scattered that only a full rewrite will suffice. This could all be avoided with the guidance of an outline.

Think of the outline as a map with directions on how to get your story idea from your head to paper. An outline guides the story by targeting vital events, focusing character traits to keep them consistent, or briefly describing the story’s development from beginning to end.

Early outline for my book Cursed by Cobrador.

I’ve written a separate post on How to Outline. But just know that this step is essential to the writing process. Without an outline, you’re likely to get sidetracked from the plot in a way that’s going to cost you time and money to fix later in the editing process.

Write the Book

This is the easy part. Our favorite part, in fact! Write the book, but keep your outline handy as you do. You don’t have to write everything exactly as the outline says; the story should flow naturally and the characters will inevitably develop on their own. But having the outline close by will help you remain plot-driven while writing.

I always advise that youwrite everything you want to include in the book. When it comes to the editing phase, it’s always easier to delete a chapter/scene/character than it is to add one. So write everything. You can delete whatever is unwanted, distracting, or irrelevant in the end.

Hopefully these tips have given you the confidence needed to get down to business!

And after you’ve typed “The End” on the final page, fear not for I have another post to guide you to publication.

If you have any questions for me or tips for others, I’d love to read them in the comments below! Thank you for reading!

How to Outline

The most common advice I give to authors, especially those whose manuscripts struggle with consistency or completion, is to adhere to an outline. But then I always get that follow-up question: What is an outline, and how do I make one? Simply defined, the outline phase of writing is when the author plans how the book will be written from beginning to end. Let’s dive a little deeper.

Why Outline

The purpose of an outline is to keep the author plot-driven while writing. Without a guide from beginning to end, characters are bound to lose their connection to the plot, storylines go rouge, and we often lose visual of the mission behind why we started the book in the first place. The outline helps keep us focused on the overall picture.

Of course the story should flow naturally, and the characters will develop into who they are meant to be all on their own. But the events of the story need to be purposeful and conflicts need to be resolved. Outlines consist of the substance that fills the gap between start and finish.

How to Outline

Outlines can vary based on what works for you as an author. I recommend following this basic formula: Start > event > event > event > Finish. Use as many events as are necessary in between the beginning and end to achieve completion. This formula can be applied in a detailed chapter-by-chapter map of the book like this:

Cursed by Cobrador ©2022, Danny Raye

In the book False Cathedrals where character development drove the plot, the outline looked like the Serpinski triangle (a mathematical structure of an equilateral triangle that is made up of smaller equilateral triangles):

False Cathedrals, Jonathan D. Clark

Other outlines can be a simple checklist of required events.

Cursed by Cobrador ©2022, Danny Raye

You can tailor your outline to what works best for your plot, your thought process, and/or your writing style. Include as much detail as necessary to ensure clarity and consistency in the writing process.

What if I Don’t Outline?

Every author has a process for preparing a story to be written. But, if you want to wing it instead of plan it, you’re more likely to end up writing a novel full of developmental issues. Developmental issues mean you will need to hire a developmental editor, which can be costly. I tend to catch developmental errors and suggest edits while I beta read for authors, but not every beta reader offers that insight. So, I guess the question you need to ask yourself before you determine if you need to create an outline is this: Are you capable of being consistent with and in control of your manuscript at all times while writing? If you’re like most of us authors, you will be sensible and answer “no”.

Creating an outline will keep the book on topic and aid the author in maintaining a steady storyline throughout the novel. Without it, your manuscript may get the best of your wallet.

Already use an outline while writing? I would love to see your process in the comments below! Thank you for reading.

Get Fit with Hannah Roy

Physical health is often one of the easiest features to compromise when it comes to our well being. Especially in today’s world where we are so accepting of appearances and the motto “love me as I am” seems to excuse complacency. But what does God’s word say? First Corinthians 6:19 says, “your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost” and later in verse 20 continues with, “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body…” We are not meant to be obese, gluttonous, or lazy in care for our physical bodies. Instead, our bodies are meant to be disciplined temples for the Lord.

So ladies, if your New Year’s resolution is to take those verses seriously, I’ve got just the girl to help you get started!

Meet Hannah

My name is Hannah Roy! My passion for fitness started in 2020, and I started falling in love with the way working out and eating healthy made me feel! However, something was still missing… I went through a lot of struggles during my fitness journey, but the biggest struggle was that I left God out of it. God wants to be a part of everything in your life, including your health. Now that God is included, I get to honor him with my health! Living healthy is so much more fulfilling now! The Lord laid on my heart to share what I have learned with other women in the world who are struggling with the same things I did. And so, by the Grace of God he has allowed me to create this health coaching business where I help women learn to honor God by creating healthy lifestyles.

3 Reasons Why Hannah’s Worth It

Investment: When hiring a professional to aid you in improving the quality of your life, you want someone who actually cares about the quality of your life, right? Hannah is a sincere soul who invests in her clients on a personal level. Working with her is a judgment-free experience. You’ll walk away from sessions feeling physically charged and spiritually refreshed. And when the Devil tries to tear down your confidence, Hannah will be your ally in Christ. Community: As Christians, we all know that you can’t life alone. The lone Christian is vulnerable to spiritual attacks from the Enemy, especially when that Christian is abandoning sin for servitude. Ladies, we need each other to keep from giving in or giving up on this faith-and-fit journey. Jesus sent the disciples out two-by-two. Not only can Hannah Roy be your plus one along the way, but she has a Facebook community of over 500 ladies who support and encourage one another! And it’s free to join! Foundation: Hannah’s entire business is founded on the scriptural objective to present your body as holy and honorable before God. Not to make you skinny and pretty. After all, God doesn’t see beauty in the physical, but in the spiritual. Through faith-based fitness, we learn to discipline our flesh (Galatians 5:16) and to care for the physical gift we have received (I Corinthians 6:20). And if your fitness goals stand on the Rock, nothing can shake you.

If you’re looking for a faith and fitness coach, I recommend looking into Hannah Roy!

New Year’s Ambitions

As New Year’s Eve approaches, I decided against creating a list of “resolutions.” After all, as a Christian, sanctification is a daily process not just a vow we take and break at the beginning of each year. Instead, I decided to list everything I want to achieve as a servant of God in 2023.
