The Flannan Isles Vanishing

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.

Today: The Flannan Isles Vanishing
https://dannyechase.com/blog/flannani...

On the day after Christmas, 1900, Joseph Moore was put ashore to investigate why the lighthouse had been dark since December 15. He found all three keepers gone.

The Wild Hunt: Ghost riders in the sky

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.

Today: The Wild Hunt: Ghost riders in the sky
https://dannyechase.com/blog/wildhunt/

Today we’re going to train our eyes on the skies! And what do we see? A mighty hunter and a pack of dogs, horses, or other beasts racing across the horizon, making a terrible noise as they rush above you! What could it mean? Well, that depends on who you are.

Phantom Islands

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.

Today: Phantom Islands
The Isle of Demons, Fata Morgana Land, and of course, Atlantis

https://dannyechase.com/blog/phantomi...

Check out the blog post for the whole story and some phantom writing prompts, such as:

*But of course, it’s the Bermuda Triangle! The Triangle is a great place for things to appear and disappear at sea. If ships and planes can vanish, why not entire islands? Imagine a fog-shrouded island appearing from nowhere, seeming to offer refuge to lost vessels, only for the passengers to discover that the island likes to time-skip or maybe just sink. Or perhaps it’s a permanent phantom, inhabited by descendants of every ship that’s gone missing in the area.

Dearg-Due, Irish Vampire

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.

Today: Dearg-Due, Irish Vampire
https://dannyechase.com/blog/deargdue/

The story goes like this: once upon a time (in Waterford, Ireland, perhaps), there was a young woman of such wondrous beauty that news of it spread far and wide. She cared little for that, and fell in love with a poor, young farm laborer. The young woman’s father, however, saw a chance for cold cash, so he betrothed her instead to a cruel but wealthy man.

Crisis Apparitions

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.
Today: Crisis Apparitions: Spectral Visions of the Living

https://dannyechase.com/blog/crisisap...

The story goes like this: when someone is in a moment of crisis, whether it be death, near-death, or just a time of great anxiety, they can project an image of themselves to a loved one. The image can speak or be silent. It can look ghostly— someone floating above the floor, shining with radiance, or resting in a coffin— or it can seem exactly like a real person visiting. Many times crisis apparitions are comforting: a beloved family member coming to say a last goodbye.

The Obstacle Flight

Hey, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.

Today: The Obstacle Flight: Evading ogres with everyday items
https://dannyechase.com/blog/obstacle...

Let’s say you’re a plucky hero who’s just stolen a magical item from an evil ogre. That’s the good news. The bad news is, the bad guy’s onto you, and he’s fast. Something needs to change.

Let’s start with what you’ve got with you. Hopefully, you’re carrying a comb, brush, mirror, handkerchief, pinch of salt, or flask of water. If not, grab a stick or a drop of your own sweat, and throw it behind you. With a little magic (usually provided by the villain’s resourceful child), that object will transform into a barrier between you and your pursuer. This is called the obstacle flight, and it’s one of my favorite fairy tale motifs.

A Forest of Superstitions: Folklore About Trees

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.

Today: A Forest of Superstitions: Folklore About Trees

https://dannyechase.com/blog/forest/

Ever nail a lock of your hair to a tree to cure warts? Okay, maybe we won’t get that weird. But how about “knocking on wood” in the hopes of protecting a run of good luck? I admit I’ve done that. Superstitions about the gentle giants that live among us are as old as the forest itself.

The Black Shuck: English Hell Hound

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.

Today: The Black Shuck: English Hell Hound
https://dannyechase.com/blog/blackshuck/

The Black Shuck is a type of folklore beast called a Hell Hound, which doesn’t really bode well as a name, actually. These doggos are denizens of Down Below, and they like to hang out in suitably goth environments like deserted roads and graveyards.

Hell Hounds are found all over the world, and their legends inspired the Sherlock Holmes story The Hound of the Baskervilles. The Black Shuck (shuck possibly meaning either “devil” or “shaggy”) roams eastern England. And he’s big. Like as big as a horse. In fact, he’s sometimes linked to the Wild Hunt. He also doesn’t always have a head, which does cut down on ear-skritching opportunities.

Room For One More

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.

Today: Room For One More: A Deadly Invitation

https://dannyechase.com/blog/roomforo...

The story goes like this: a traveler is staying the night at a friend’s house. Shortly after midnight, a sound from outside brings them to the window. On the driveway below, the traveler sees a hearse pull up. There is no coffin inside, but instead a group of living people. The hearse driver, a man with a sinister appearance, looks up at the traveler in the window and says, “There’s room for one more.”

Shaken, the traveler returns to bed, and in the morning, dismisses the creepy encounter as a dream. But later that day the traveler goes to board a bus, and finds the driver looks exactly like the hearse-driver from the night before. And he repeats his invitation— “There’s room for one more.”

Terrified, the traveler backs away from the bus, letting it leave without them. A moment later, a truck slams into the bus, killing everyone on board.

Mirrors

Hey, y’all, it’s Weird Wednesday! Where on some Wednesdays, I blog about weird stuff and give writing prompts.

Today: Mirrors: For now we see through a glass, darkly
https://dannyechase.com/blog/mirrors/

I’ve been looking forward to this post, because as far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing creepier than mirrors.
The movies know this well, and today we’re going to do a little reflection on the topic (haha) by looking at some favorite superstitions and legends involving mirrors. (And yes, I mean Bloody Mary.)

Check out the blog post for the whole story, and some reflective writing prompts!
