Peter is suspicious, but Mother clucks her tongue and tells him to be polite. Ms Jones is a nice lady and will look after him very well. When Mother leaves, Ms Jones takes off her face. Her mandibles quiver in ravenous joy as she stalks towards him.

TAMBOURINE

Louder and louder the tambourine jingles, entering her dream and jolting her awake. And then, of course, it is silent, in the lifeless hand of the puppet in the corner. She shuts her eyes and finally drifts off. A cold, dry chuckle comes from the puppet’s mouth.

BOOK REVIEW - RISE OF DRESCA

Rise of Dresca by Tim McKay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A very entertaining story with wonderful world-building that picks up pace to a thrilling finale. The author has an excellent command of language and his prose is very tight, with not a word wasted. While this is mostly a good thing, I wouldn't have minded him loitering here and there to give a lull in the action and let me catch my breath. That said, I immediately bought the second book on finishing this one and am intrigued to find out what happens next. Highly recommended.
