Sale Ending Soon: Beneath the Willow Tree by Abby Burrus

(My review) The first half of Beneath the Willow Tree is available to those who subscribe to Abby’s newsletter on my website, but it is free until midnight tonight!

This choice, this Man without a Mark, could be her redemption or her undoing.

Nova’s world is controlled by the Mark. Embedded in the skin of all born in her world, those who are stronger control the weaker by it. Pain, betrayal, and fear are imprinted on Nova’s soul as her Mark is in her skin. Her one solace in this Mark-controlled world is a willow tree on the bank of a lake that she goes to sit under at the end of the day.

But one day, she meets a Man different from them all. He is Mark-less. And beneath the willow tree, he tells her who he is, and the choice he offers her. The unheard of, the impossible, what she has dreamed of.

But for Him to do it, she must trust him, something she is sure she cannot do again.

Beneath the Willow Tree is a Christian fantasy short story. It can be read and enjoyed by non Christians.

Interview: Bethany Griggs, Author of Willow

I am so honored to have my dear friend, Bethany Griggs, on the blog today for an interview. She recently released her first novel, Willow.

Loss. Desolation. Heartache. Will she ever discover her Best Friend?

For Libby Sutherland, life is starting to feel like one big loss. Loss of health. Loss of family. Loss of friends. She draws joy from the lives of the children in the daycare where she babysits and the horse therapy ranch where she volunteers.

But when her chronic illness takes a dive, even these are threatened. The one place Libby is able to share her grief is with her arms around the neck of her beloved horse, Willow. When Willow is suddenly out of reach, where can Libby turn?

Will she ever learn to confide in Jesus and truly know Him as her Best Friend?

Interview!

VH: Hi, Bethany, and welcome to the blog! I’m so excited to have you join me today, and congratulations on the release of Willow!

Tell me a little bit about your writing journey. When did you first start writing?

BG: Thank you so much for inviting me to your blog, Vanessa! I’m so happy to be here. My writing journey started at a young age, and as a child, I was very much interested in the idea of writing a book, or at least a story. But those attempts didn’t usually get much farther than a paragraph or two. What I did write was poetry. My oldest poem that I still have is one I wrote when I was ten. As a teen, somehow I let go of most of those ideas of writing stories and decided I was a poet, even writing a silly story in poetry form. I didn’t get back into fiction writing until around my early twenties.

VH: What authors have deeply influenced your writing?

BG: Interestingly enough, C. R. Hedgcock is one author who had a deep impact on my writing journey. The first novel that I wrote was one I started right after reading one of her books. While my writing has changed a lot since that point and is not very similar to hers anymore, she definitely had a big impact in my beginning.

Another author who has influenced my writing and whose work is more similar to mine is Rebekah A. Morris. She is one of the only writers I read who writes in the same genre as me, Christian Contemporary Fiction.

The author who impacts my writing the most on a day-to-day level is Hannah E. Griggs, my sister! She helps me brainstorm my stories and keeps me plodding along when the going gets rough.

VH: What’s one of your best pieces of advice for an aspiring author?

BG: Besides writing often, which is the best way to grow, here is my advice. Don’t compare your writing to that of other writers! Just because your writing does not feel the same as what your favorite authors are writing does not mean it’s not good. It actually shouldn’t feel the same because we all have our own individual styles! Different is not necessarily the same thing as inferior. And while some people may not click with your writing style, there will likely be many who will love it. Another thing to remember is that the books you are reading have been edited. Don’t compare your rough draft to someone’s finished volume! These are things I need to remember as well.

VH: What’s your favorite type of character to write?

BG: Ooh, this is an interesting question! And not one I have thought a lot about before. Probably one of my favorites is the underdog character who has so much going against them and yet grows and comes out ahead in the end. They may still be facing some of the same obstacles, but they are better equipped to handle them or develop a different view of what really matters. This is actually one of my favorite kinds of characters to read about too. Also, I really enjoy writing little kids into stories. They just add so much!

VH: At what point did you realize you wanted to publish? How did you decide to go indie?

BG: I think when I started writing my first novel, I hoped that I would be able to publish it someday, though I wasn’t sure when that might happen. It was when I first attended the King’s Daughters Writing Camp a couple of years ago that I learned a lot more about what goes into self-publishing. I have wanted to go indie for a little while, and when a small press I was considering publishing with fell through for me, I just planned to self-publish.

VH: What did you learn from the Lord during writing Willow?

BG: What a lovely question! Actually, the theme of the story, talking to Jesus and making Him your best Friend, is something the Lord was teaching me during the time I was writing Willow. That’s how it became the theme of the book! While I still have so much room for growth in that area, that time was a blessing as it brought it more to my attention.

VH: What do you hope readers will take away from your writing?

BG: As the series name that Willow is part of (Hoofbeats of Hope) implies, I hope that people will find hope as they read my writing, realizing that they aren’t alone and that God has a plan for them. I also hope that they will draw closer to God and know Him more through going on a journey with the characters.

VH: What do your upcoming projects look like?

BG: I have several other books started. One of those is a daily devotional for ladies with chronic illnesses, and it is in the editing stages. I have another book started in the Hoofbeats of Hope series. It’s a pro-life story and also includes the horse therapy ranch from Willow. The story I’ve been working on the most recently is for a sister series to HoH, and it’s a story about forgiveness and how we all need it and need to extend it to others.

Thanks so much for chatting with me today, Bethany!

He knew there was a cost. He just didn’t know how great it’d be.

Gabriel Kelly returned to Russia for one reason—to bury his parents. After ten years in the United States, he hadn’t expected to return to his childhood home in the face of tragedy. However, after short days in Moscow, he begins to consider if the same call that cost his parents’ lives is now upon him.

Sofia Rykova’s dreams finally came true when she became a principal soloist with the Bolshoi Ballet. One night, though, an old crush walks back into her life, making her wonder if there is more to life than ballet. Gabe Kelly is just as she remembered, just as she longed for—yet religion stands between them.

Unknown to Gabe and Sofia, danger lurks closer than either would have guessed. The deaths of Gabe’s parents grow more suspicious by the day, and Gabe and Sofia are drawn into the midst of a plot neither can escape. Will obedience to God’s call—in spite of their fears and desires—result in a price too steep to bear?

One moment, one choice can change a life forever.

Two years ago, Evgeny Yurlov’s dreams shattered on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. Without many options, he lands a job—far different from ballet—and returns to Moscow. There, he’s reunited with old friends—friends who need his help as government scrutiny intensifies on Grace Baptist Church.

Sasha Dvornikova isn’t the woman she once was, but Dmitri Rykov’s shadow is relentless. Reminders of her past lurk everywhere, and her sins have branded her undeserving of a man like Evgeny.

As mounting danger surrounds both the church and his job, Evgeny finds past struggles reignited, struggles that reach even Sasha. Amidst so much darkness, will Truth prevail, or will Evgeny’s choices destroy him—and those he loves?

You can only run for so long …

Two years hasn’t erased the sting of betrayal and the shadow of the past, but Nikolai Alexandrov has finally found a way to live. Moscow, Russia, is the last place anyone would look for a rogue ex-CIA officer, and the members of Grace Baptist Church see beyond his past to the man he is now.

Molly Baird never wanted to be a missionary, but due to her father’s wishes, she lands in Moscow to aid her missionary cousin, Gabe Kelly. All is foreign in the massive city, though, rendering her unable to serve. Only the few English speakers in Grace Baptist’s congregation hold a trace of familiarity—including Nikolai, whose kindness she can’t deny.

Yet when a sniper’s bullet strikes far too close, Nikolai and Molly are thrown together in a desperate race against untold threats. When time runs out, will Nikolai and Molly be able to trust God with the past—and with the future?

Even blissful marriage and the Christmas season don’t change the hard reality of the world …

And I’m Back … (With Exciting News)

Typing up this blog post feels a little foreign yet also so familiar – I’ve sat at this desk, looking out this window, working in ol’ WordPress many a time – but not much recently. As some of y’all may know, I was blessed with a teaching job about an hour and a half from my parents’ house. Teaching orchestra is a joy – and has its hardships – and also takes the majority of my time and my creative energy. Therefore, this blog and my writing have had to take a backseat to helping little children (and bigger kids, too) play beautiful music.

I could write several blog posts – and probably a good-sized book – about everything I’ve learned and experience since I was blessed with this job. Change is so hard, especially for someone like me, but God is faithful through all of it. Isn’t it amazing how God never changes? Moving out, learning a new job, meeting new people, and on top of it all, my sister getting married (!) was a huge adjustment for me. But it’s all for God’s glory and for the good of those that love Him. Absolutely incredible how He cares for us in so many small and big ways!

Writing Updates

As you might imagine, my writing does not have too many updates. I’ve written a smattering here and there, but nothing that amounts to many words.

But in spite of a lack of writing these days, I actually am a part of an upcoming anthology! Behold the lovely blurb:

Receiving a black rose is a death sentence.

In these seven lands, receiving a black rose is a death sentence. When these perilous flowers endanger their lives, a woman must help save the sister of the man who betrayed her.

A huntress finds herself becoming the hunted, and two sets of mortal enemies are forced to work together—if they don’t first kill each other in the process

When a couple’s daughter is born with a deadly birthmark, can they escape in time? Or will they lose their daughter to evil?

False accusations and threats force an innocent man to flee and fight for his life—but his path to freedom is threatened by memory loss.

And when two friends become unexpected enemies, can loyalty overcome duty?

In this collection of seven Christian fantasy romance novellas, characters will learn the value of faith and trust as danger grows and justice is threatened.

I’ll let you guess which one is mine in the mix of all of those lovely plots (comment below!) If you’d like to help with spreading the word about this anthology, please click on the link below!

COVER REVEAL FORM

While I probably won’t be as consistent as I have been with the blog, I’m attempting to post a bit more than I have in the past few months. (We’ll see how it goes once I get back into the swing of work – Thanksgiving break is a blessing!) Please let me know how you’re doing, and I hope each of you have the most beautiful of Thanksgivings! We do indeed have so much to be grateful to the Lord for!

All the Details

Another Homewood Christmas is more than just a collection of Christmas tales. It’s also a holiday treasure hunt that will keep you making surprise connections all the way through. Keep your eyes open for recurring characters, locations, and of course, the special Christmas star that pops up in every story!

To Follow the Star (Courtenay Burden): Stella Quincey had been so sure this was God’s calling—so sure she was following His path. But when the trail flounders to a dead end in the heart of a winter wilderness, Stella finds herself grappling with doubts. Does God lead—only to abandon His children in their hour of need? Or is there a lesson for Christmas of 1831 that Stella has overlooked from the story of the wisemen and the star?

The Star Over All (Chelsea Burden): Unable to forgive himself for a foolish mistake with far-reaching consequences, Reginald Quincey sees a visit to his mother’s family for Christmas 1875 as a way to escape—perhaps forever. But when a snowstorm and a fascinating stranger turn his plans upside down, will Reg be able to see the lesson hidden in a simple Moravian star?

The Christmas Violin (Erika Mathews): With Faith Aldrich’s twin sister and her violin called overseas and troubling complications threatening to silence all music of the 1919 Homewood Christmas celebration, can Faith find the presence of God sufficient joy for a holiday that even her little daughter will remember forever?

Advent for the Orphan (Bethany M. Griggs): Len Wilson and her family are done with foster care and the pain it always brings. But when a tearful little girl stands on their rug in need of a home, what choice does Len have? Will she be hurt yet again or will a Christmas miracle in 1976 complete their

family?

The Prince of Peace (Rebekah A. Morris): For Tricia Tally Wilson, Christmas of 1993 is supposed to be a time of family and joy, but will one more rejection shatter her peace? Or will her Prince of Peace work in unforeseen ways to bring a Christmas she’ll never forget?

Simple Gifts (Olivia Godfrey): Surrounded by her niece and nephews, Leah Peters’ aunt Gwen realizes how much she’s missed her family over the years. After helping dig into memories tucked into a leaky shed, she gets lost in the past. Will the family finally come together in Christmas of 2002 and learn that the future is as bright as the Moravian star glowing at the top of the tree?

Friendship’s Gift  (Hannah Foster): Perry wasn’t sure what she was seeking when she inherited her aunt’s old house in 2014. Hidden Treasure? Family secrets? Or just simple answers? When her neighbors volunteered their help, she finds something entirely different than what she was looking for. But maybe it was exactly what she needed and more.
