Seasons of a Writer’s Life

Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. – Philippians 4:11-13

Do you remember when you first started writing?

I do. In those days, I had boundless enthusiasm and so many ideas. I could happily daydream about my characters for weeks—plotting through scenes as I cleaned at work and even sometimes when my poor professors were lecturing. (Sorry!) These first stories were so thrilling to me, and I couldn’t wait until I had time to jump back into my document and continue typing away in another world.

And then sometime around year three or four, things became not as easy. I didn’t have as much time to focus on my writing—university became a bit consuming—but in lulls of the school year, I would keep working on my projects. These were historical fiction—Civil War, 18th century England and America—and modern-day books about ballerinas and musicians and doctors.

This timeframe was also when I began publishing, and editing opened up a whole new world for me. The freedom of typing away a story without thoughts over how to fix every single sentence,  how the plots just didn’t make sense, and how this scene was unnecessary filler were long gone. I gained an editor in my head. 😊

And then last summer, after graduating from university, I ran into the biggest case of burnout I have ever experienced in my writing. I had grand plans for publishing last summer, but I could hardly get through a few pages of editing—that dear ol’ editor in my head was just too strong.

So I took a break, and it was so needed—the Lord knew I needed to rest and to give up writing for that short period of time. And when that was over, I dove into a brand-new project that ignited my imagination for a few short weeks until I started a new job.

Fast forward to today … and things are very different than they were in either of those stages of my writing life. During the last school year, I could only find snatches of time to write—too many of my brain cells were taken up by work. Even when I did find time to write, I was too tired. My creative juices were simply drought-burdened.

There was light within this writing darkness, though—during breaks from school, I would begin having the slight itch to begin writing again. (Honestly, breaks from school are so helpful!) And even sometimes when I didn’t feel like writing during the school year, I would—and I made some decent progress.

But in this, I found it’s so much harder to focus on a fictional world when the trials, joys, and sorrows of the real world are much more present in your face. However, these real-world experiences make us better writers—my heart aches more for my characters now, believe it or not. 😊 My writing, hopefully, is more realistic now that I’ve lived through more of life.

There are so many different seasons of life—and that includes our writing. It’s okay if you don’t have that burning passion to write anymore. It’s okay if you’re in a season when all you can do is keep your head above the work of today, whether that’s homework, taking care of children, or endless amounts of work for your job. All circumstances can make us better writers, even if we’re not writing at that exact time.

And in the end … remember where your writing is in the grand scheme of life. Just this week, I was discouraged with editing and all that goes into publishing a book. And then truth smacked me in the head (thank the Lord). Why was I looking to writing to make me happy/fulfilled, etc.? Writing is a gift from God, but it is not what should ultimately make me joyful. And then when I stopped looking at editing/writing (and success therein), wow … things were much better. As Christians, our ultimate Source of joy and fulfilment isn’t in this world—it’s in Christ.

And through Him, we can do all things and be content in all circumstances—whether we are writing like the fury or completely detached from the writing world.

Life and Writing Updates! (The Negligent Author Hath Returned … For Now)

[image error]Pexels.com" data-medium-file="https://vanessahallauthor.wordpress.c..." data-large-file="https://vanessahallauthor.wordpress.c..." src="https://vanessahallauthor.wordpress.c..." alt="" class="wp-image-4335" style="width:374px;height:auto" />Photo by Pixabay on Pexels.com

Happy summer, my friends! When I last popped onto the blog, it was March – and I recall mentioning in a post before then that I was planning to be blogging more. You can see how well that turned out. 😊

Nonetheless, I have returned and hope to be more active during the summer months. Lord willing, there are some exciting writerly things coming up – more on that later!

Life Updates

All thanks to the Lord, I finished my first full year of teaching in May. I could write many blog posts about my experiences and everything I learned, but suffice to say, the Lord uses trials and blessings to sanctify. I’m thankful for the sanctifying and preserving power of our God!

School starts again in August, but prep begins earlier—all of which means I get to see my students in the near future and my summer isn’t as long as it was in college. Which brings me to my next point!

Writing Updates

Last year, I determined in my heart to edit and publish the 4th book of my Grace Sufficient series. Obviously, that did not come to pass—last summer was a huge time of burnout for me after graduating college and finishing up student teaching. Editing was nigh to impossible, but after a couple of months of struggling, the Lord graciously allowed me to be able to write a good deal. (That project is sitting at 70Kish, and the first draft probably won’t be finished until next year, haha!) Regardless, it was fun to write and explore a different time period. (Though it wasn’t a different location than my usual …)

Fastfoward into this year, and I was honored to be a part of The Black Rose Collection. Since the entire collection is a fantasy, I was pushed out of my comfort zone a bit as I explored worldbuilding and indulged my attempt at more poetic prose. You can read more about A Life’s Cost here!

Now we have reached this summer … and I prayerfully planned to begin edits on Unforgiven (Grace Sufficient, #4) again. I was definitely bummed on how last year’s attempt turned out, but I am so thankful that I didn’t publish it last year. I was not—and still don’t feel—ready to address the topics in this book, but God has taught me things this year that I did not grasp last year. His timing and His Ways are always perfect, even when they don’t make sense.

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

2 Corinthians 12:9

So all of that to say … Lord willing, Unforgiven will be released this summer. Editing is bouncing along by God’s grace, but it’s still difficult—especially when foolish me attempts to do any of it in my own strength. Seems I would’ve learned that way doesn’t work by now, hmm?

Blurb, cover, and all of that exciting stuff is still in the works, but watch this space for more information. I am excited to get to share this story with you—and I pray it shows you the most important Truth of all.

How is your summer going? Are you planning to work/complete any big projects? Let me know in the comments!

A Silent Hope Release!

Can hope be found when everything seems hopeless?

When illness threatens her brother’s life, deaf peasant Calaine Kalen vows to do anything to save him—including finding work near a war-torn area overrun with giants and nefarious schemes. When war threatens Prince Renner Leorin’s kingdom, he vows to save it no matter what—even if that means convincing a surly former enemy to help. Neither peasant nor prince ever imagined their efforts would place them in each other’s path.

She needs a cure. He needs a miracle. Can tragedy bring two unlikely hearts together, or will heartbreak shatter any hope of both love and saving those they care about?

A Silent Hope, a New Adult, faith-filled retelling of The Wounded Lion, is a standalone novella, complete with tropes like rags-to-riches, concealed identity, and a deaf heroine. It is part of the Hope Ever After series, a collection of twenty hopeful and uplifting fairy tale retellings. Each book is written by a different author, so it can be enjoyed in any order. The proceeds from this series are donated to the O.U.R. (Operation Underground Rescue) to rescue children from exploitation and trafficking.

Black Rose Release!!

And the day has finally come!

I still remember reading Madisyn Carlin’s email as I sat in the darkness of a high school parking lot. And thanks to her, my mind started spinning about a story with a black rose far more than the orchestra classes I was supposed to be working with in a few moments. (Never fear, I was able to be very distracted by attempting to teach high schoolers that day.)

But that small idea of a black rose began spiraling out that day, all until it spilled out into this fantasy novella that I had never really imagined writing. All thanks to Miss Carlin, I now have written fantasy – something I never would’ve done on my own! (See, good friends are important. I am so thankful for that sister!)

So, after nearly a year of writing, leaving the project, editing, fretting, and all of the drama that writers put themselves through, A Life’s Cost is now free in the world within this beautiful anthology!

I am so thankful to the Lord to be included in this anthology with this amazing bunch of writers. Every story in this collection is wonderful!

ADD ON GOODREADS

Receiving a black rose is a death sentence.

In these seven lands, receiving a black rose is a death sentence. When these perilous flowers endanger their lives, a woman must help her best friend regain his memories before it’s too late, a huntress finds herself becoming the hunted, and sworn enemies are forced to work together—if they don’t first kill each other in the process.

Seeking the truth turns perilous for an innocent business owner and his betrothed when they come too close to uncovering a secret someone wants to remain hidden. When a couple’s daughter is born with a deadly birthmark, can they escape in time? Or will they lose their daughter to evil? False accusations and threats force an innocent man to flee and fight for his life—but his path to freedom is threatened by memory loss. And when two friends become unexpected enemies, can loyalty overcome duty?

In this collection of seven Christian fantasy romance novellas, characters will learn the value of faith and trust as danger grows and justice is threatened.

A Life’s Cost

Niall and Caoimhe Ó Brolaigh are naught but a young couple eager to welcome their firstborn into the world, yet short moments after the babe’s birth, the threat of death shatters their peaceful life. The law of the land declares a black rose worthy of death, and young Siobhan is doomed afore she is e’en a mere week of age.

Roark Ó Lochlainn is a man with a blood-red past that leaves him an enemy of the land. Yet his discovery of the young couple and their helpless babe presents an impossible decision—one that too clearly mirrors his own tragedy.

In a land full of darkness, only escape offers life for wee Siobhan. Yet is there any hope for deliverance—and is one life worth the impossible cost?

Can you tell I enjoy the drama of fantasy? I pray these stories are used to bless each one of you!

Are you planning on reading this anthology? Do you write fantasy? And yes, I’m back for a moment from my stint of silence, but it feels good to be back blogging again!

The Writers’ Vision Freedom Conference is a virtual writing conference whose profits will go to Operation Underground Railroad to help free victims of human trafficking.

When, Where, & CostWhen?

January 20th, 2023 – 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. EST (Registration closes on Jan. 16th.

https://www.writers-vision.com/events

Where?

Online! (Google Meets, recordings will be available)

How Much?

$20 base cost, but you can donate as much as you want!

Our Heart

Writers’ Vision was founded in 2021 as an online writing community, but as the community has grown, so have our goals. We strive to empower Christian creatives and show them how important their words and art have. Whether they are writers, bloggers, artists, or musicians, we want them to know just how powerful creatives can be.

This conference is a huge leap, but one we feel God is calling us toward. Through it, we hope to empower Christian creatives, primarily writers, to use the gifts God has given them to change the world! To empower them to use their creative skills for huge and glorious things in the name of our Father in Heaven. Creating is a beautiful experience in which we mimic the greatest creator of all time, and the responsibility of such an honor is great. Through the course of the conference, we want to educate Christian creatives on just how great that responsibility is and how they can forever impact the world around them.

All profits from the Writers’ Vision Freedom Conference will be donated to Operation Underground Railroad to help free victims of human trafficking.

Our goal is twofold. Educate creatives on just how much they can impact the future and use the funds to do something extraordinary right here, right now. Implementing what we will be teaching at the conference with the profits made by the conference.

Creating should never be just about money or popularity, but about how we can change the world for the better! How we can impact other people’s lives and spread the Light of our Holy Father! And that is exactly what we will be exploring at the Writers’ Vision Freedom Conference!

How Does the Price Work?

Because all proceeds are going to O.U.R. (Operation Underground Railroad), the base cost of the event is just $20 dollars! But if you’d like to give more to the cause you can.
