“All the times Mom and Dad fought when we were little, I hid out at Bridget’s house. If her dad had been drinking, we would pull down the frothy, pink netting around her four-poster bed and pretend we were princesses, safe in our castle with her Golden Retriever, Elsie, there to protect us, instead of two scared, little girls.”

“Iranians were never on TV before. Now they’re on all the time. Images of angry Iranian students shouting “Death to America” dominate the nightly news. There’s even a whole, new news show on ABC opposite The Late Show with Johnny Carson: The Iran Crisis—America Held Hostage: Day Fill in the Blank. Every day, the show’s title updates, e.g., America Held Hostage: Day Six, America Held Hostage: Day Seven. The worst advent calendar ever.”

“What is my platform? Well, winning. And getting into NYU.

“I’ll identify my principles and platform during the campaign kickoff,” I say, which sounds very presidential without actually saying anything meaningful.”
