Hey, this is fun. Shawn Speakman just sent the first pages of all the stories in the upcoming SFF anthology, Unbound. That includes a story from me. It's got a nice little illustration as well.

Click on it if you'd like a teaser...

As for the book itself, info available here.

Michael Stein Goes Solo

Artwork by Maya Calypso DurhamJust a quick note to say that one of my stories, All the Girls Love Michael Stein, is now available as an ebook. It's a story for kids. Or adults. Or for kids to read to adults. Or vice versa... Oh, I don't know! It's just it's own thing. It's a story I wrote for my daughter on her 13 birthday. She enjoyed it. I certainly enjoyed writing it. Maybe you would too?

Here's the description:

From the internationally acclaimed author of the Acacia

Trilogy comes a story for cat-lovers of all ages...
Michael Stein is a cat. A clever one. He’ll be the first to tell you that.

His girl, Lucy, dotes on him. He kinda likes her, too.

He’s always had big plans for the future, grand ambitions. He was going to do wonderful things, have big adventures and really make a name for himself.

But that was before an accident changed everything. Now, Michael Stein finds himself in an unfortunate condition. He’s not the cat he was before, and the new realities facing him are shocking.

More importantly, Lucy’s in trouble. Michael Stein wants desperately to help her. But - considering his condition - how can he? It won’t be easy.

Fortunately, he’s a clever cat...

And then stuff happens. I can't say too much because I could easily give away some of the key, important-like aspects of the story. In the mood for something different? Something light, yet heartfelt? A bit of modern fantasy (that's actually all based on fact)?

If so, try out Michael Stein: available HERE.

High Stakes Delivered

Very pleased to have sent my portion of the next Wild Cards novel, HIGH STAKES, in to George RR Martin last night. It's been a long process this time around, with some serious delays. But yesterday I got what I needed to finish, I went to work and 4,167 words later I pressed SEND. (My sections are 43,000 in total.) So. Done.

Until I have to do rewrites.

Now back to packing and teaching and all the other things of life!

The mild, wonderful days of...

You know what I'm dreaming of? Spring. The mild, wonderful days of... oh, let's say May. What a marvelous month. By late May, the snow really will be gone. Really, I'm sure of it. I'll head up to Vermont for the absolutely wonderful Vermont College of Fine Arts Novel Retreat. We'll talk books and writing. I'll wear short sleeves. I'll sit outside at some cafe and chat with folks as birds fly around singing.

It'll be a dream.

You should join me.

Acceptance!

Very happy to say that I just heard back from my editor on my recently delivered Spartacus manuscript. It's a go. He likes it and has officially accepted it!

There's still plenty of revising work to be done, but it's a big relief to get the confirmation that the book exists, and will be my next publication with Doubleday/Anchor. Book # 7 with them!

Oh, and I think it has a title now. It will likely be this:

The Risen: A Novel of Spartacus
