Don't put me in a box!

“Her book looks ‘Christiany’.”
I can take a negative review about my writing. No biggie, it’s all part of the job. What I can’t tolerate is this disrespectful attitude toward Christians. My first point of contention is this: Don’t put me in a box! Whatever a reader thinks about Christians, I can almost guarantee I’m not even close to that image.
My second point of contention is that this type of review falls into a hate speech area, and yet is not challenged as such.  A slanderous (and untrue) comment was posted in a public forum. I didn’t complain, as I assume it would create more trouble than letting it stand. The review implied that my publishing imprint means something that it doesn’t.  FYI: Independent Spirit stands for free spirit; an artist, a creative person. It is not “code” for anything.
What’s with the disrespect and hate toward Christians? If this movement toward bullying Christian authors online via reviews and message boards is due to a perception (oftentimes completely true) that “Christians judge” or “Christians are hypocrites and bigots”, isn’t posting disrespectful remarks about Christians, Christian writers, or Christianity expressing the same intolerance?
As for myself, I refuse to label myself as a Christian author. I considered it, and allowed a religious genre to be attached to a couple of my books, but it doesn’t sit right with me. I will not put myself into a separate place in the literary world. I will not be branded with a fish symbol. I will walk around in the mainstream, where I belong.
If my religious bias slips into my writing – skim it if you don’t like it. But I will not put warning label on my books: “Christian author”! I write mysteries, suspense, thrillers, sci-fi and adventure books. I don’t have a ministry background, nor do I feel at all equipped to write religious books. I am not a Christian author. I am an author who happens to be a Christian.
I am an independent thinker. Many of my views are contrary to the Christian church. I don’t even attend church actually. I’ve burned out. To those who think they know what a Christian is, in my case and many others, I highly doubt it. Don’t put me (a drummer, tap dancer, painter, Enya fan, thriller writer, politically independent, wine drinking comedienne) in a box.
I have absolute unwavering faith in my God, but I don’t judge you or your right to believe in Someone or something else. I also believe that it’s entirely possible that those who love, regardless of how faith manifests Itself to them, are believers in a connected way. For God is love, and would He condemn those who love? I don’t have all the answers, and I don’t claim that I do. All I know is what is true for me, and I’ve experienced death situations that have convinced me of my faith: unshakable, undeniable. That doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate your right to belief something different, and by “you” I mean the universal you. I have no idea what you, the reader, believe.
I have sat on this blog post for a long time. Honestly, I hate blogging. I don’t like writing about myself or my true feelings. I prefer the safer (so I thought) world of fiction. But I just can’t shake my anger on this issue. I am compelled to write it, and let people see it, even though I know the hating will likely begin anew.
If you’re reading this and thinking, “I think I like her, I’d like to try her writing”, please skip all my older titles, as they are all at least ten years old now and I’m so thoroughly over them. Go straight to my new book, the one most worthy of reading: Angels Mark, which has hit the bestselling list more than once. Next time I hope it stays on for longer! (Yes, angels in the title – it has something to do with the plot)

Virtual Memories
VIRTUAL MEMORIES is a short, fun mystery & suspense light sci-fi novel about a business that offers its clients the incredible opportunity to virtually experience memories. The sessions feel so real that many clients say that it's like going back in time. Clients can also create fantasy memories, casting themselves in any role they wish. But for Jack the fantasy session is TOO real. He forgets about his wife and kids, and believes himself to be a CIA agent on a mission to hunt down the man in the Mustang. What's going on here, besides a man gone crazy? Serena Wilcox, private detective, is on the case, because of course there is a mystery behind this story. VIRTUAL MEMORIES will keep you guessing until the very end. If you are looking for a light-hearted, fast, and clever read -- without anything graphic to make your stomach turn -- this is your book.

Additional titles in the internationally bestselling Serena Wilcox Mysteries are on Amazon: " The Serena Wilcox Mysteries: Books 1, 2 & 3 " and "Angels Mark".  The 3-book set is currently #1 in Amazon's search results for "the most popular indie Kindle book". Every American should read this book!

"Angels Mark" is a suspense novel ripped from today's headlines! Readers who are weary of a bipartisan American government, poor economic news, political posturing and bickering, and a deadlocked two-party system, will find "Angels Mark" to be a satisfying read: the perfect anecdote to watching the news. Serena Wilcox is on the run from the law, for reasons that involve three American presidents, a woman in Iran, and a false church headed up by two deranged brothers.
"Angels Mark" is a fast-paced novel of suspense, justice, mystery, and humor that will keep you guessing to the very end -- and beyond!

If you like your female detectives bright, energetic, quirky and down-to-earth, you'll love Serena and her compadres. Nothing like having a lead character you can identify with and would, if she were a real person, be someone you'd like as a friend.

"Dramatic Mom": When Life is a Comic #16

"Dramatic Mom" #16
by Natalie Buske Thomas & Cassandra Thomas
HOW SUPERMAN CLEANS A ROOM

It was room-cleaning day and I was satisfied to hear a lot of noise coming from my son's bedroom. I asked him periodically how it was going. "GREAT!" All smiles. All on track. Or...? I opened the door and discovered that my boy had spent the entire time building a cable car system to transport one small item at a time down from his loft bed. "I'm cleaning all the stuff off my bed!"

Like these comic stories? Please meet my real life family. Watch our kickstarter video for live footage of me and my kids.
