Beta reading

 I spent a few days reading two novels from writers on Goodreads who wanted beta readers to give them feedback. 

What a great experience. Two writers with enormous potential. 

One a completed sci-fi/alternate future novel that needs a few tweeks. I thought it would be a struggle but it held me to the end with excellent writing and a plot that kept twisting. 

The other was the first few chapters of a crime/thriller that has the potential to be a huge seller. Terrific crisp writing, a setup that draws you in wanting more. 

I think I'll do some more beta reading. One or two a month. A good way to keep me on my toes, seeing how good other unpublished writers can be.

The route to K2 base camp took us through wonderful mountain country and past remote nomad Uighur shepherding camps then up the mighty Shaksgam River which drains the north side of the Karakorum range. Having been driven from Kashgar to Yecheng and then over the Kun Lun mountains to the start of the trail, we met our Bactrian camels and camel drivers and headed into the mountains.

Much of the Kashgar market in 1990 was almost medieval - people making tools and utensils on small anvils and lathes, and this man bending thin strips of wood over a purpose-made brazier to create steaming baskets or sieves. After Kashgar we headed for Yecheng and the Kun Lun range we had to drive across to get to the start of the trail to K2's north side.
