“This is why I love Florida,” Katie mused to Arlo, who was sitting in the passenger seat of her green Volkswagen Beetle while she drove to Kandied Karma. It was late February, and with the top down to allow the gentle breeze, the sun was deliciously warm on the crown of her head. The wind ruffled Arlo’s fur as Katie navigated to a parking spot near the rear entrance of her grandmother’s artisanal chocolate shop in downtown Aura Cove. Katie quickly unbuckled her seatbelt but then froze when she saw her reflection in the rearview mirror.
“Holy cow. It’s all white now,” she remarked, leaning in and whipping her chin from side to side to confirm her entire head of hair was now as white as the driven snow. The change happened so quickly that it sometimes felt like she was staring at a stranger when she caught a glimpse of herself in a mirror.
“I think you look beautiful either way,” Arlo offered, barking once for emphasis.
“I think you’re trying to get back in my good graces with flattery.”
“But is it working?” he teased, batting full-tilt puppy dog eyes up at her.
Katie laughed. “Nope.” He whined in dismay, and she scratched under his chin to comfort him. “You’re cute, but you’re still in the doghouse for spying on me. Besides, I’m not the kind of girl who needs ego boosts from others anymore. I can genuinely say I like who I am.”
“What an evolved creature you’ve become!” Arlo exclaimed. “Even just a year ago, you would have never made that claim.”
Katie nodded. “True. I’ve come a long way, but there is still so much further to go.”
“You’ll get there,” Arlo encouraged, confident in his owner. She patted him on the head and then reached over to open the car door to lead him into the back door of the shop. Once her eyes adjusted to the lower light inside, her jaw dropped, and she stopped dead in her tracks. Following too closely, Arlo whined when his nose hit her heels, then quickly backtracked, quivering in fear and hiding behind Katie as he looked up at the woman standing there.
Zoya rolled her eyes at their over-the-top reactions. “You’re going to have to get used to seeing me on the regular around here. If I’m supposed to make those crotchety witches in the eternal coven happy, I’m going to need to find ways to be more altruistic. Hence, I decided to search out my two favorite do-gooders.” She waved her gloved hands to indicate Yuli and Katie. “Got any ideas?”
“Step one might be to stop referring to the eternal coven as crotchety witches,” Katie offered, trying to be helpful, but Zoya shot her an incensed glare that made her last few words trail off at the end.
“Historically, doing good has not been your strong suit,” Yuli reminded her.
“True,” Zoya admitted with a shrug. Her white hair was gathered in a loose braid that flowed down her back. She wore an aqua-colored sundress that reminded Katie of the color of the sea surrounding the Castanova Compound. “I’ve far preferred delivering comeuppance, but maybe it’s time to turn a new leaf.”
“Pfft.” Yuli’s disbelief was clear. “New leaf! Ha!”
“I thought after the Fioletovy Mahiya, we decided to let bygones be bygones.” Zoya challenged her reaction, leveling her eyes on Yuli, who refused to back down, testing her grandmother. The Fioletovy Mahiya was a once-in-a-lifetime lunar event that temporarily lifted the veil between the living and the dead. During last February’s full moon, Katie, Yuli, and Zoya discovered the only way to step into the fullness of their supernatural powers was to unite the mortal coven. It was a task that still seemed monumental, even after the healing they’d individually received during the event.
“In that case, since we open in fifteen, why don’t you start your good deeds by stocking the truffle case?” Yuli boldly asked in her typical direct fashion, making Katie grin at her audacity. It was obvious, Yuli was not pulling any punches and was ready to test this magnanimous version of herself Zoya was trying to claim.
Zoya scoffed at the idea, balling her hands on her hips. “Ana Castanova can’t be seen engaging in manual labor,” she huffed. “It’s dangerous to her brand.”

I love to cook, and this week I was on a quest to find the BEST Chicken Marsala recipe on the internet. This one from Once Upon a Chef was DELICIOUS. I could drink the pan sauce. We love the mushrooms so I doubled them and it was worth it. Make it, and angels will SING.
We've been pounded with back to back record snow fall and this is the kind of warm, stick to your bones comfort food that gets us Midwesterners through.
This was a fast-paced, compelling read filled with characters you'll love to hate. It's filled with sharp insights into life in suburbia, and the judgement of the ambition of mothers.

I love New Year! It's a time for me to take stock of where I have been, and chart a course to where I want to go. I planted the seeds four years ago when I started writing my books and after tending to them daily, it looks like this is the year I get to harvest. What a lesson this concept has been! Instead of constantly pulling out my sprouts looking for new growth and doubting every decision, I made the conscious effort to leave them alone and step out in faith that my time is coming. It's happening and I could not be more thrilled.

2023 is ending on a high note for me and I can already tell 2024 is going to exceed my expectations. There are some huge life changing announcements that I will share in a few weeks, and I can honestly say I am the happiest I have ever been in my adult life.
If you read Scotland with a Stranger, you know how dark it was. To be here now, in this beautiful place, doing the work I love is SUCH A GIFT. To have fully restored the relationship with my son, who now FaceTimes me for impromptu pancake making lessons is a joy I will never take for granted.
The reason I overshare my highs and my lows is to inspire others. No matter where you are right now, no matter how dark and hopeless life can seem, there is always a path to your ultimate happiness. Believe it and fight for it with every fiber of your being, because you deserve it. My biggest wish for you this holiday season is that you reconnect with the magic. It's right there, waiting for you to love yourself enough to let it in.

I know. It's shocking, right? Readers have been asking about my process and I decided to add up the time I invest in writing. It's overwhelming to see the number in black and white. When I started down the road on this dream, I had one goal. To write a book that would hold it's own against any traditionally published book. I didn't know what it would entail, but after 4 years I do.
Every book I publish has been through a multi-draft process. The magic in Aura Cove requires deep thought and massive revisions when my alpha readers point out plot holes or inconsistencies. It is a daunting task.
My boyfriend recently asked me: "Why do you have to create all these integrated threads in a story? Why can't you simplify the story and publish your first or second draft? You don't have to rewrite significant chunks of a story to make it plausible or historically accurate. It's fiction."
Because it's weak sauce. Because I have one chance to engage a reader and tell them a story that will stick. This sometimes requires four major drafts.
Is it worth it? Financially? Absolutely not. I think children in third world countries working in sweat shops are making more per hour when you add in the cost of covers, professional editing, ad spend, and marketing expenses. The entities making the most from my exhaustive efforts are Amazon followed closely by Meta.
Will I continue? Probably in some capacity. I have two more books to write in the Aura Cove series to give it the ending it deserves, and then I will take a few months off. During that time I will evaluate whether this is something I want to continue or if it's time to hang it up. It's simple. This is a business. It has to make a return on investment or it's time to scale back into hobby mode. Slow the entire machine down, and release maybe one book a year.
We'll see what the universe decides. The magic will appear, or it won't and for the first time in my life, I am okay with whatever happens. I know, without a doubt, I worked my ass off to produce the best books I could write and if it wasn't enough then I am at peace with it.
A mother witnesses her only child commit a violent act and then she is sent back in time to unravel the reason why. Any mother will deeply identify with the range of feelings this mother feels as she goes back in time evaluating her parenting with hindsight---the joy, the guilt, the shame. It's a wonderful story with many little twists that come together in a very satisfying way. Great Read!

Holy COW! The series finale of Billions was one of the most satisfying endings of any series I've ever watched. So delicious!!
Currently Reading: Other BirdsThis was a sweet and heartwarming read perfect after the gory one I read last week. I wanted to crawl inside this book, meet the characters, and move into their condo neighborhood. With a few clever twists and characters that are easy to fall in love with, you will adore this read if you love heartwarming tales about found family.

It's the last season and I am hoping they do the series justice during the finale. It's swaying political, so I find myself dozing off and getting annoyed by Mike Prince, but I'm in too far to turn back now. I am a finisher, so I will power through, hoping that it doesn't devolve into the similar weak sauce letdown I felt watching the last season of Succession.
Currently Reading: The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying VampiresCreepy and gory, this one is a far departure from my regular reads, but it held my attention and was perfect for spooky season. The author does an incredible job making your skin crawl during some horrific moments in the story. There are some stereotypical themes I found slightly annoying, but overall it was a hard one to put down.

This week I got unexpected and AWESOME news! Barnes and Noble chose Hawt Flash as one of their Favorite Paranormal Women's Fiction Novels. It was a huge honor to have my book chosen (as this is a brand new genre for me) and to see my first book in the series alongside the heavy hitters like Elizabeth Hunter, Deborah Wilde, and the like is a dream come true. It also legitimizes my work and lends credibility to the series. It was definitely a PINCH ME, I'm dreaming moment!

Currently Watching: The Fall of the House of UsherThe perfect creepy Netflix series to watch this Halloween season. I thought it was clever and interesting. Gave me opioid crisis, Sackler family retribution vibes and I loved the ending. Great storytelling and compelling visuals.
Currently Reading: Pen PalThis is a VERY GRAPHIC story with several BDSM-type explicit sex scenes, and not my typical read, but I picked it up anyway since I heard so much swooning in a book group I'm in. I'm also fascinated by what moves a reader to fall in love with a book and considered it research.
This one was very interesting with twists and turns. You have to suspend belief a bit and let the story take you away. There are some plot holes and inconsistencies, but I gave it 5 stars since it was hooky and entertaining, even though man chest on a book cover makes me roll my eyes.
When I am up against a deadline, I run myself down. It's something I need to change, but often I work and work and work until my body says "Hey dummy, since you don't know how to rest, we've decided to make you sick and give you no other choice." This happened last week, but never fear, Egg Drop Soup with Chili Crisp to the rescue!
Here's my recipe. FYI, I don't measure ingredients, except with my heart, so these are closest approximations. You can adjust as you like.
In a pan on the stove add:
3 C. water3 1/2 tsp. Better than Bullion Chicken Base (If sodium in an issue start with 2 1/2 to 3.)2 tsp. cornstarch1/2 to 2/3 C. of frozen peas and carrots1/4-1/2 tsp ground ginger 1/4-1/2 tsp white pepper1-2 tsp sesame oilBring to a boil then take off heat and add 2 scrambled eggs while you stir the mixture continuously with a whisk. If you don't stir fast enough you'll have egg lumps. Still tasty, not as visually appealing.
Toppings that I think are crucial....but you decide for yourself.
1-2 tsp Chili Crisp (It's the chili oil that's blown up on Tik Tok) DO NOT SKIP THIS. Chili Crisp is the 8th Wonder of the World.)Chopped Scallions (Green parts only. A small handful)Everything But the Bagel Seasoning (A hearty shake)Try not to burn your mouth and ENJOY!
