Expo facto
My previous experiences at Book Expo ran like this -- show up, sign, walk around until I've sweated through all my clothing, go home. This time, I had five events, spread over two days. Wednesday afternoon, I went to the Bookseller's Luncheon, and got to see some very cool people get recognition, including Lauire Halse Anderson and Scott Westerfeld. Then I did a video interview with Damon Caporaso of BSC Kids, followed by a joint book signing with Corey Doctorow, who was a lot of fun to ta...

Lost causes
I stopped watching Lost after they went into the hatch. But I was aware that the last show was coming. And then I lost track of things. Now, a day after, I'm intrigued by the lack of buzz or comments spilling over into my peripheral awareness. As a web surfer, news browser, etc., I generally stumble across anything that is generating talk. But an hour or so ago, it hit me that I hadn't seen a thing. I was able to find news and blog posts easily enough by searching, but there's a lot les...

Off the Road Again
The spring travel season is pretty much over. I'll be at Book Expo, and I have a school in late June, but the packed weeks of travel are finished. Now, I have to try to remember how to be a writer.

Speci-us
It's endangered species day. To help do my part, I bought to tickets to a fund raiser. I'm excited about it. I've never been to an all-you-can-eat panda fry.

Pro Bono
I just saw on the news that Bono had to have emergency back surgery. I wonder whether this happened because he patted himself on it too much?

Two tired
Apparently, today is Bicycle-to-Work Day. I tried my best to participate. It wasn't hard getting from the garage to the kitchen, but I wiped out three times in the hall.

Cart blanch and the morning after
My school visit yesterday went a bit longer than planned. When I got there, they showed me a cart with the books awaiting signing. I estimated there were 100 to 150 books to sign. The school had set aside two hours for signing, so I figured that would be fine. As the time passed, and the stacks dwindled more slowly than I'd anticipated, I realized I'd be staying after school. I also realized I'm a crappy estimator. The cart held about 350 books. (Enough to make me blanch.) I got back ...

Launch time
Pat Brisson is one of the nicest persons on the planet. One example -- she started a program where she went into a prison, had inmates select a picture book, recorded them reading the book, then sent the book and tape to their kids. She's also the author of some excellent picture books, such as Wanda's Roses. Today, her first YA novel, The Best and Hardest Thing hits the shelves. She's made some trailers. Please check them out:

Frank Frazetta
When I visited the Frazetta Museum twenty years ago, Ellie Frazetta, while selling me a print, mentioned, "You know, his health isn't very good." I guess she saw that as a selling point. Happily, he had many years ahead of him. Sadly, he died yesterday. He was a master at what he did, and we're all richer for it.
