About Lil's Spirits
Being as it is almost Halloween, I want to talk a little about my current project "Lil's Spirits: This Side of the Veil."
I expect this anthology will include multiple volumes as volume I is complete, being edited in part, and I am deep into the stories for volume II now.
Lil's Spirits is the continuing story of Lilith, an extra-Biblical character and her quest for vengeance since creation. I wrote my first story with Lilith in 2002 while in command in Germany. I was a captain in the Army and commanded the 535th Engineer Company in Grafenwoehr. For Halloween that year, I wanted to take my lieutenants on a monster run through the dark forests around the installation but I had to create the monster story to tell them first.
"The Knockl" went from being a quick short story to 8000 words that read like a legend handed down through the ages. The story includes a dark witch crucial to the plot who's character developed beyond my expectation. Before I even knew her name or her history, I knew The Knockl witch would be a character I wanted to write again.
Several years later, in 2008 while serving as an Army public affairs officer in Iraq, I was commiserating with my good friend, our brigade chaplain, as I often did since our offices were side by side in a secluded building of our small base. Chip is a studied and learned theologian. Not sure what led us to the conversation but we got onto the topic of Jewish mythology and he told me about Lilith and the myth of Adam's first wife. As if she possessed me at that very moment, the bells went off in my head and now the witch of The Knockl had a name.
The Knockl is among two other pre-released short stories that will be included in the coming anthology, "Lil's Spirits: This Side of the Veil," which will be released with a fourth short story and a novella.
