Teaching CREW

If you've dropped by this page from time to time, you've probably seen me babble about my CREW project. Now, my just-graduated (and exceptionally talented) former student Jordan Rowe has put together a lovely little short that provides the tidiest explanation possible of what we've been up to. And why we're so proud of it. Curious? Please do check this out >>

Caliburnus Online

The dynamic, exceptionally gifted collective of students that I manage in the creative writing program I started building almost 20 years ago at Campbell Hall has lit out in another new direction. This time, we've taken Caliburnus , our longstanding arts journal, and started transforming it into a constantly evolving websomething that will publish new literature and art and audio work in a nonstop stream throughout the school year, culminating in the publication of a hardback book collecting it all next May.

Our first official published piece--a pretty dazzling piece of poetry and an accompanying painting--won't be up until next week. But the page is there, along with a video serving as our calling card/call for submissions/announcement of theme and backstory for this year's journal (click play to see the little film). It's kinda cute. The kids who created it are seriously talented. So I thought some of you--especially those of you who spent some part of your high school life dreaming Caliburnuses with me--might enjoy seeing it:

Teaching, writing, and Saskia!

So, I have considered myself a writer my whole life. Still do, always will, can't help it, don't want to try. But teaching has given me so many things that writing won't, can't, ever. not even if there really is a Writing Promised Land, not even if I ever reach it.

Pee Wee has fun

What it gave me today involved "Pee Wee's Playhouse," a Bluetooth speaker, a displaced recording apparently of me reading Motherless Child cribbed from Youtube (though no one, including me, recognized it), a chocolate cake with SAAAASSSKIAAA!!!? scrawled across it, the Dutch version of the movie "The Vanishing",

description

my current Into to Creative Writing class, and two gleeful, spectacularly talented, and seriously unhinged former students who apparently started hatching the plot that led to today at least a month ago, from 3000 miles away. Katie Russell and Olivia Nathan, you are not well people. And my Intro class may never recover. And you made me very happy.
