The Abandoned Brewery
The abandoned Lincoln Oakbank Brewery is slowly being reclaimed by nature. Now a haven for climbing plants, birds and clusters of spiders, the skeleton of the original five-storey tower is as beautiful as it is sad. I know little of the history of the brewery or when it closed, though a single abandoned shoe (pictured below), appeared to suggest something sinister in the site’s more recent history. This striking relic can be found on the side of the Newell highway at historicNarrandera, NSW.

All Women Hate Each Other? Not on your life.
‘All women hate each other,’ or so the saying goes. This is a view of women many instinctively agree with and it was the focus (and title) of a panel I recently took part in at The Festival of Dangerous Ideasat the Sydney Opera House, with Germaine Greer, Eva Cox, Dannielle Miller and moderator Jenny Brockie.
From the sports field to the boardroom, male ambition and competitiveness is praised, yet the term ‘ambitious’, when it describes a female, is often used with ambivalence. There is a terr...
The Ghost Town of Whroo
‘…the miners, their machinery, and their buildings have gone; but in the hill the great open cut gapes like a crater…’ – from Don John of Balaclava by Miles Lewis 1977.
The ghost town of Whroo, Victoria, is an abandoned attraction in an abandoned ghost town built at an abandoned gold mine.
Two sailors – John Thomas Lewis and James Meek Nickinson discovered a gold nugget in the grass at Whroo in 1854, the same date as Russia’s Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War, hence the name. A gold mine w...

Trekking Tasmania
After 10 days of exploring Tasmania we were reluctant to leave and determined to return soon – and for longer. Our trip foundus trekking mountains and exploring caves, and we were fortunate to encounter a lot of wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, dolphins, a humpback whale feeding her calf in the spectacular Bay of Fires, and a rare fairy ternin Freycinet National Park- sadly one of only about 100 pairs left in the world. Before departing for this trip, we bought a copy of 100 Walks in...

Hatshepsut – The Queen Who Became King
My fascination with Egyptology has been reignited thanks to research for a new novel (one of the best perks of writing is researching what you want to learn about) and I have been reminded of the extraordinary story of Hatshepsut, the woman who became a pharaoh.
Hatshepsut is possibly the first great female leader in recorded history. She was the fifth pharaoh of the Eighteenth dynasty of Ancient Egypt (living from approx 1508-1458 BC) and is regarded by Egyptologists as one of the most succes...

Stereotypes
The angryfeminist, vacuous model, bitchy boss, desperate housewife, smug mother, home birth zealot, evil stepmother and gold digger all have one thing in common – they are stereotypes. Let’s cast aside the labels that divide us. We are women, we are people and we don’t belong in boxes.
On Nov 1st I will be speaking atInside & Out, a Women Say Something event,to talk about stereotypes and image. Other panellists includeBeccy Cole,Stella Delight,Rachael Oakes-Ash,Naomi Palmer,Monique Schafter andL...

Wicked Women
CAPTION: The portraitSchooled to Kill, by Rosemary Valadon is featured in Wicked Women,a new exhibition at the Justice and Police Museum.
EVE was the first bad girl, and ever since, women have been linked in the popular consciousness with the concept of sin and their sins with sex.
Mae West once quipped that there are ‘no good girls gone wrong, only bad girls found out.’ And she has a point, if you consider that Eve’s sin was to ‘eat from the Tree of knowledge.’ The Good Girl standard then, of...

The Moss Paradox/Let’s Hear It For The Girls
New interviews:
In today’s Sunday Magazine I chat with Angela Mollard about love, life, stereotypes, writing Assassin, losing my mother when I was young, and why I quit modelling in my twenties and became brand ambassador for Jacqui E this year. (I model their new collection in the piece.)
An excerpt: “My motto is ‘Life is too short to live the same day twice,’” she says. “I’m always seeking out new experiences. Women, in particular, cop a lot of negative stereotypes – if they’re career profess...
