UPDATE: Watch Cyberhate on ABC iView now.

I have been a tad quiet on my blog lately as I’ve spent much of my time in the past 10 months or so helping to get the show Cyberhate off the ground, co-writing it, and working on the filming and editing with our team. I’m proud to be co-executive producer and co-writer of this series, as well as host,...

My Honest To Goodness Top 5 Beauty Tips

It feels a bit strange to write a beauty blog, but for years I’ve been asked almost every week for beauty tips. As a 43-year-old woman requests for beauty tips could be seen as novel in culture where youth is still so often represented as being a prerequisite for beauty, but perhaps it is precisely my age that can bring a slightly different focus to a blog on the subject. (That and the fact that I owe no allegiance to any beauty brand or product).

After some thought – and general sense of wei...

The Henry Lawson Festival of the Arts

Over the long weekend I had the pleasure of spending time in the town of Grenfell, NSW, as the official special guest of the 60th Henry Lawson Festival of the Arts. The beloved Australian bush poet and author Henry Lawson was born in a Grenfell gold field in 1867, to one of Australia’s most influential suffragettes, the publisher, writer and social reformer Louisa Lawson. 150 years later, the town of Grenfell again remembered their most famous son with a weekend of festivities that brought th...

I have been a tad quiet on my blog lately as I’ve spent much of my time in the past 10 months or so getting the show Cyberhate off the ground, co-writing it, and working on the filming and editing with our team. The Order of Lambrick Park

Tonight in my home town in Canada I was awarded the Order of Lambrick Park, an award that ‘recognizes and honours Lambrick Park alumni who have made significant contributions or achievements since graduation’. My beautiful dad, Bob, accepted the award on my behalf, and read this message for me, in my absence:

‘It is such an honour to join other Lambrick Park alumni in receiving the Order of Lambrick Park. It has been many years since my time at Lambrick, but that time helped form me, and it s...

I support a #NoKidsPolicy for paparazzi images. This is why it matters:

For the first time in my life I have filed a formal complaint with the Australian Press Council.

The issue isn’t unflattering press or even a false claim. As a somewhat public figure over the years I’ve had plenty of good and bad press, and well, even some of the nasty criticism has surely been deserved. But this isn’t about me. It is about my child. I have made a formal complaint to the Press Council in the hope of having identifying images of my young daughter, which were taken by a strange...

Speaking Out: A 21st Century Handbook for Women and Girls – an extract

My 11th book and 2nd work of non-fiction, Speaking Out: A 21st Century Handbook for Women and Girlsis officially out today. Yes, I have written a handbook.

Why Speaking Out? Why a handbook? And why now?

This book arose partly from the hundreds of questions I have been asked by women and girls in recent years. Questions like,‘How do you find the confidence to speak out?’ ‘How do you handle trolls?’ ‘How do you form an argument?’ ‘How do you research?’ ‘How do you do public speaking?’ It was al...

Online threats are not free speech

‘This abuse, it must be stressed, is not a matter of free speech. It is a matter of public safety and law. Threats of death, rape or other physical harm are illegal online, just as they are offline. Likewise, it is against the law to encourage a person to harm themselves.’

Last year, after being announced as patron for the Full Stop Foundation for ending rape and domestic violence I saw a spike in online threats. ‘rape the b*tch again’ one man wrote to me, adding ‘cuff yourself to deep water’...

The Silent Grief – On miscarriage, pregnancy and loss

I am ashamed to admit that I wavered on whether or not to write about this subject, despite writing about so many other difficult and sometimes personal topics.

Miscarriage impacts about 1 in 4 pregnant women, and it has impacted me multiple times. It is a difficult subject for any person, particularly those who have experienced it. When I was writing The Fictional WomanI had thought about writing something of my miscarriage in 2009 and later changed my mind. It was too dark and unwelcome a m...
